Notes: The rates of hemoglobin saturation and carbon dioxide reduction in blood flowing in a curved channel membrane exchanger were studied theoretically by considering the fluid-limited process and the wall-limited process. The fluid-limited process was studied for laminar flows with and without secondary circulations. The relatively nontraumatic centrifugally induced circulations in the curved channel can reduce the required channel length to less than 1/500 that required for unperturbed flow. Such improvement, however, is practical only if very permeable membranes are available. If the PO2 = 715 mm. Hg and PCO2 = 0 mm. Hg at the walls, the fluid-limited analyses show oxygenation to be the slower process and the wall-limited analyses indicate CO2 removal to be the limiting process. If the best available silicone rubber membranes are used, the process will be fluid limited for the unperturbed flow and wall limited for the flow with secondary circulations.

Notes: An equation of state for the two-phase region whose constants depend only on the critical pressure, the critical temperature, the normal boiling temperature, and the latent heat at the normal boiling point is shown to describe vapor pressure, latent heat, and saturation volumes of methane well.

Notes: Thermal conductivity measurements were made for the dissociating system 2 NO2 ⇋ 2NO + O2. Experiments were made at temperatures from 548° to 792°K. and pressures from 1 to 30 atm. Under these conditions the chemical reaction is in a nonequilibrium state, and the rate of energy transport is limited by the rates of the forward and reverse reactions. Experimental results agreed very well with a theoretical model based on a linearized reaction rate expression. Using the thermal conductivity results, it was also possible to determine the chemical kinetic constants for the reaction.

Notes: In order to investigate the possibilities of pressure-hole errors in the measurement of wall normal stresses in the flow of polymer melts, a 2.280-in. long slit die has been designed, having a slot with a rectangular cross section, 0.050 in. by 1.000 in. Three transducers were mounted on each of the two long sides of the rectangular slot along the longitudinal center line of the die and located so that each transducer was directly opposite another in the opposite side. The three transducers on one side were flush mounted. Those on the other side were mounted through pressure-holes with different diameters (0.017, 0.034, and 0.050 in.) Measurements of wall normal stresse were made with high density polyethylene and polypropylene melts at 200°C., following the experimental procedure described in the author's earlier papers. The present study indicates that pressure measurements made through pressureholes are essentially the same as those made flush-mounted instruments, and that there are no pressure hole errors in the measurements of wall normal stresses, insofar as polymer melts are concerned.

Notes: The three-parameter tabular correlation of Pitzer et al. for calculating the compressibility factor of pure components has been extended to lower temperatures in the region where Tr is from 0.5 to 0.80 and Pr is from 0 to 9. The compressibility-factor is expressed linearly in the acentric factor Z = Z(0) + ωZ(1) with values of Z(0) and Z(1) tabulated in terms of Tr and Pr. The generalized correlation has been tested for 21 compounds with a total number of 463 data points. The average deviations in the calculated compressibility factors are 1.63% for the compressed liquids and 0.67% for the gases.
