Notes: The birefringences of injection molded plates and the birefringence during steady, isothermal shear flow were compared for some amorphous polymers. The materials studied were a polystyrene, a “toughened” polystyrene and an acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene copolymer. The birefringence of the plates, notably the maximum value for the average over the thickness was found to be related to the shear stress at the cavity wall that had occurred during the mold filling process. This relationship was independent of temperature. To a good approximation, it was also the same as the relationship between the flow birefringence and the shear stress at the wall in isothermal channel flow. It thus appears that the anisotropy of injection molded objects is dominated by the shear stresses during the mold filling process regardless of the temperature and of the macroscopic rate of deformation.

Notes: Numerical integration of the coexistence equation for isothermal P-x data can be carried out by standard techniques. Two questions are considered with respect to this procedure: (a) Do continuous, analytic P-x relations exist which fail to provide thermodynamically acceptable results? (b) Does it matter from what point one starts the numerical integration? It is the purpose of this paper to demonstrate in each case that the answer is affirmative.

Notes: Pressure drag coefficients of spheres in a cubic packing of equal spheres have been determined at Reynolds numbers of 27,000, 10,000, 5,000 and 2,500, where NRe is based on superficial air velocity and a sphere diameter of 7 cm. Two cubic arrangements were used: in the regular arrangement, the mean flow was parallel to one of the principal axes, while in the skewed arrangement, the mean flow made equal angles with the three principal axes of the packing. The pressure drag coefficient of the central sphere has been measured for each of the 12 banks in the regular arrangement, and the effect of bed length has been determined for lengths varying between 1 and 12 banks. The pressure drag coefficient for the central sphere and the overall pressure drop in the skewed arrangement were found to be lower than for the regular arrangement at the same Reynolds number. From the distribution of local pressure measurements, the separation and reattachment points on the central sphere in each bank were determined, indicating that the boundary-layer behavior on a sphere in a packing is similar to that over a single sphere, when allowing for the effects of turbulence and of pressure gradient.

Notes: Mean velocity and turbulence measurements in the void spaces of a cubic packing of equal spheres have been made at Reynolds numbers of 27,000, 10,000, 5,000 and 2,500, where NRe is based on superficial air velocity and a sphere diameter of 7 cm. Two cubic arrangements were used: in the regular arrangement, the mean flow was parallel to one of the principal axes, while in the skewed arrangement, the mean flow made equal angles with the three principal axes of the packing.Transverse mean velocity and turbulence intensity profiles across the center line of a central pore have been measured behind every bank and behind the bed for the regular arrangement of ten banks of spheres. The power spectrum and probability distribution of the fluctuating velocity have also been determined.

Notes: The problem of synthesizing an optimal multicomponent separation system which is energy integrated is solved by a combined decomposition and dynamic programming technique.Dynamic programming is an optimization technique which allows the solution by decomposition of a multistage or serial optimization problem. Whenever the special serial structure is absent, again decomposition can be tried, but in this case it is by no means obvious how to decompose effectively the given problem into subproblems. In this paper the nonserial problem of synthesizing an energy integrated separation system is solved by decomposing the original problem so that a serial structure results.

Notes: A new objective function for estimating parameters in differential equations, based upon a weighted least squares criterion for the residuals of these equations, is presented. The use of Lobatto quadrature in combination with the collocation technique reduces the original problem to one of minimizing a simple algebraic expression with respect to a series of unknowns. The method can be applied to different types of differential equations as shwon by a series of examples and leads to very good estimates. It becomes particularly useful for systems which are linear in the parameters and for which all states are observable since in this case the usual convergence problem is avoided. The gain in computation time when compared with classical methods is significant.

Notes: Correlations of the excess Gibbs function and the activity coefficients of a binary, liquid-phase system at constant temperature depend on reduction of P-x-y data taken for the system in vapor-liquid equilibrium. It is shown that use of a full P-x-y data set is for all practical purposes based on just the P-y values. Alternative procedures require only P-x or P-y data. In any case, effective use of a full P-x-y data set can be made only if redundent experimental values of Px,y or P are compared for consistency with calculated values. This cannot be accomplished by means of the popular area test for thermodynamic consistency.
