Notes: Walking of Chrysemys has been studied by cinephotography and x-rays. The lateral sequence, diagonal couplet gait, limb support sequence, and wide track provide great stability, yet a slight pitch and roll cause some plastral drag. Velocity ranges from 28 mm to 51 mm/second, and fluctuates within a stride. Limb movements and structure resemble those of other ectotherms, but incorporate modifications reflecting the animal's short, broad trunk encased in a shell and carried close to the ground. The triradiate pectoral girdle so articulates with the shell as to act as a truss for weight transfer to the ground. Girdle rotation increases the efficiency of the girdle as a truss, and contributes to locomotor efficiency. The glenoid cavities are more than twice as far apart as the acetabula, so a thrust from the pectoral girdle has less propulsive efficiency on the center of gravity than one from the acetabulum. The humerus and femur are protracted to a greater extent than in other ectotherms and their horizontal arcs of retraction are less. Rotation of these elements about their longitudinal axes contributes to the length of a stride and to foot placement and withdrawal. Differences in the movements of comparable segments of front and hind limbs correlate with differences in the width of the girdles, a crus longer than the antebrachium, and different capacities for joint rotation.

Notes: Polymers from tetrakis(hydroxymethyl)phosphonium chloride (THPC) or tris(hydroxymethyl)phosphine (THP) with ammonia show similar thermal degradation, but appear to be of different chemical structure. Solution reaction of THPC with urea or melamine or by solid-phase reaction with urea gives products ranging from water-soluble liquids to hard, brittle, insoluble polymers. Reaction of THPC with piperazine yields products of low thermal stability.

Notes: In this paper we define a new structural parameter of polymers, and show how this may be employed. This parameter, for which only the structure and the density are needed, is the relative number of network bonds per unit volume; it is written Ner (basis 1 cm3), and it is used in conjunction with the average connectivity or connection number CN of the network atoms, where the word connection also refers only to network bonds. The relationship of these two numbers makes it possible to present a unified picture of all polymers, organic and inorganic, including such highly condensed networks as diamond. By plotting Ner against CN, the region in which inorganic and organic polymers occur can be seen. This is called the polymer zone, and it is evident that carbon polymers occupy only a small part of it. From this graph, an arbitrary measure of bond packing efficiency can be deduced for carbon polymers. In addition, the process of graphitization and carbonization can be followed graphically within the polymer zone. Ner is also related to certain physical properties such as bulk modulus, hardness, and cubical coefficient of expansion, which depend (among other things) on the tightness of bond arrangement. The resultant correlations can be used to predict the value of Ner required to achieve given values of these properties for the more rigid structures.

Notes: The surface replacement hip prosthesis reported represents an attempt to improve upon some aspects of the present design of total hip. The prosthesis comprises a cap fitted over the femoral head and a liner fixed into the socket, both being cemented with methyl methacrylate. The chief advantage of this design is preservation of bone stock. The prostheses were inserted bilaterally into six dogs, and whilst ten joints failed, one case was strikingly successful at two years follow-up. It was concluded that the design showed sufficient advantages over current total hips and that there was sufficient possibility of success in some application, to merit further study.

Notes: The two systems for artificial hip joints in use at present are metal-on-metal and metal-on-plastic. There are many variables affecting friction and wear, which include diameter, sphericity, relative geometry of the components, and surface roughness. Tests in a simulating machine incorporated cyclic load and motion. Frictional torque of metal-on-plastic joints increased with diameter; Charnley 22 mm diameter producing lowest friction. For metal-on-metal the contact situation produced variable results, but friction was higher than for the plastic joints. Reciprocating friction machine tests suggested that high molecular weight polyethylene and AP4 polyester gave low friction and wear. Vitallium gave at least three times the friction of the plastic using γ-globulin solution as lubricant; but wear appeared to be much less.

Notes: IR- and RAMAN spectra of ethylene-propylene copolymers are given, and their significance is discussed in terms of the structure of the “crystalline” units. It is concluded that vibrational spectroscopy is applicable to the structural diagnosis in this case, and that the addition of small amounts of propylene to ethylene alters the crystallinity in blocks of the latter to the less normal form containing only one chain per unit cell. In these particular cases, at lower ethylene concentrations normal crystallisation seems to occur in both ethylenic and propylenic sectors.

Notes: Sperm enter the anterior vas deferens individually in the spider crab male. There they become surrounded by secretion products from the cells of the vas deferens, and are compartmentalized into spermatophores of varying size. The anterior vas deferens can be divided into three regions. The epithelium of the anterior vas deferens varies regionally from low to high columnar. The cytoplasm contains vast arrays of rough endoplasmic reticulum and Golgi complexes but few mitochondria. Intercellular spaces contain septate junctions, gap junctions and vesicles.Once the spermatophores have been formed in the anterior vas deferens, they are moved posteriorly to the middle vas deferens where they are stored and surrounded by seminal fluids. The epithelial cells of the middle vas deferens contain large amounts of rough endoplasmic reticulum and Golgi complexes. Numerous micropinocytotic vesicles appear, forming at the cell surface and within the apical cytoplasm. Their suggested function is the resorption of secretion products of the anterior vas deferens which initiated compartmentalization of the spermatozoa into spermatophores. The posterior vas deferens functions primarily as a storage center for spermatophores until they are released at the time of copulation. Seminal fluid surrounding the spermatophores is produced in this region as well as in the middle vas deferens. The cells of this region contain vast arrays of vesicular rough endoplasmic reticulum and Golgi complexes. The cells are multinucleate. Microtubules are numerous throughout the length of the cells and appear to insert on the plasma membrane.

Notes: 100-MHz NMR spectra are reported for solutions of the 1:1 copolymers of sulfur dioxide with hex-1-ene, cis- and trans-but-2-enes, cyclohexene, cyclopentene, and norbornene, including the deuterated polymers made from hex-1-ene-2-d1, cis- and trans-but-2-ene-2,3-d2, and cyclohexene-3,3,6,6-d4. The resolution of the spectrum of poly-(hex-1-ene sulfone) was very poor in CCl4 as solvent but good in polar solvents. The main-chain CH2 protons are nonequivalent, and their chemical shifts show sensitivity to dyad structure; the α-CH2 protons are also non-equivalent. The spectra of most of the other polymers are discussed in terms of possible preferential modes of addition as well as tacticity effects.

Notes: The reactivities of isoprene, piperylene,2,3-dimethylbutadiene, hex-1-yne, and phenylacetylene, at -20°C, relative to that of cyclohexene, have been determined for the radical-initiated copolymerization with sulfur dioxide to form 1:1 polysulfones. The unsaturated hydrocarbons were copolymerized with sulfur dioxide in pairs and the composition of the terpolymers determined from the 100 MHz NMR spectra. The dienes react 11-15 times as fast as hex-1-ene, while hex-1-yne reacts 16 times more slowly. Phenylacetylene reacts 21 times as fast as hex-1-yne. The relative reactivities are interpreted mainly in terms of the effect of electron delocalization on the stability of the product radical.
