Notizen: An attempt has been made to rationalize the variables in the preparation procedure of Loeb-Sourirajan-type reverse-osmosis membranes. The quaternary phase diagram of the system cellulose acetate-acetone-formamide-water was determined and has proved a useful tool in the discussion of membrane structures and properties. A mechanism based on differences in the precipitation rate of the polymer during the membrane formation process has been suggested to explain the observed asymmetry in the membrane structure. The porosity of the membrane has been ascribed to the relative rates of water entering and solvent leaving the cast film. The effects of the casting solution composition, the evaporation time, the wash bath temperature, and the annealing procedure have been studied. X-Ray diffraction and electron microscopy were used to supplement flux and retention data of membranes made from a cellulose acetate-formamide-acetone casting solution.

Notizen: Batch and flow recirculation cells were used to study the properties of high-flux ultrafiltration membranes with different macromolecular solutions. At low pressures, solutions of completely retained macromolecular solutes have a flux which is approximately the same as the flux of pure solvent. At higher pressures, the solution flux levels off. The flux, at the leveling-off period, is approximately inversely proportional to the solution concentration. In this plateau region the flux increases with temperature and agitation of the solution but decreases with time. These results are explained by the formation of a gel layer on the membrane surface during the filtration of macromolecular solutions. In ultrafiltration, in contrast to dialysis and GPC, a linear polymer penetrates the selective barrier more readily than does a globular protein of the same molecular weight. The difference may arise from the liquid shear stresses within the barrier medium due to the movement of fluid relative to the pore walls, which is large only in ultrafiltration. Also, retention of polymers was found to decrease with pressure and to increase with agitation of the solution.

Notizen: A simple method is presented for correction of polydispersity obtained by gel permeation chromatography. The method proposed utilizes well-characterized polystyrene standards for both instrument calibration and construction of a correction curve which is then used for calculation of weight-average and number-average molecular weights and polydispersity of samples to be characterized.

Notizen: Acrylonitrile (AN) was graft-polymerized onto gelatinized cationic starch (CS) possessing diethylaminoethyl ether groups by cerium (IV) initiation to give stable latexlike copolymer dispersions. Dispersions of the latex copolymers, having up to 50% grafted polyacrylonitrile (PAN), air- and heat-dry on glass to clear, adhesive films. Sonification of up to 8% dispersions at 20 Khz reduced their viscosities from 1500-3000 cP to 15-40 cP. Scanning electron microscopy revealed that both nonsonified and sonified dispersions consist of ball-like particles measuring about 0.05-0.15 μ in diameter when dry. The films are formed by coalescence of these particles. The degree to which AN grafts onto CS at ambient temperature is related to the nitrogen content of CS, gelatinization time of CS at 95°C, sequence of AN and cerium(IV) addition, concentration of cerium (IV), concentration of AN, and severity of reaction agitation. Number-average molecular weight values of PAN were about 106 when grafting was conducted under stirring and about 5 × 105 when conducted under shaking action.

Beschreibung: The results of a wind tunnel investigation are presented for measuring aerodynamic heat transfer distributions on the 040C and 040A-L4 space shuttle orbiter configurations. Heat transfer rates were determined by the phase change coating technique, using 0.012-scale Stycast models coated with Tempilaq. Data were obtained at a nominal free stream Mach number of 8, Reynolds numbers from 1.0 to 3.8 million per foot, and angles of attack from 20 to 60 deg.

Beschreibung: Experimental aerodynamic investigations were conducted in the NASA/MSFC 14 x 14 Inch Trisonic Wind Tunnel during January 1972 on 0.003366 and 0.00419 scale models of the MSFC space shuttle pressure fed booster configurations. The configurations tested were a 40 deg cone/cylinder/13 deg flare with and without fins, a 40 deg cone/cylinder/13 deg flare/9 deg flare with and without fins, a 35 deg cone/cylinder with and without fins, a 35 deg cone/cylinder/7 deg flare and a 35 deg cone/cylinder with straight extension. Six component aerodynamic force and moment data were recorded over a Mach number range of 0.9 to 5.0. Model angle of attack range was -10 to +10 deg and +20 to 80 at 0 deg sideslip. Model sideslip range was -10 to +10 deg at nominal angles of attack of 0, 30 and 51 deg

Beschreibung: An experimental program to determine the power-on aerodynamic flight characteristics of the booster and orbiter vehicles during the abort separation maneuver is reported. An essential contribution to such a test program is the gas dynamic simulation of the size and shape of the plumes emitting from the full-scale orbiter and booster main propulsion systems. The two major effects of the plume which must be simulated are: the interaction of the plume with the external flow field, and the direct impingement of the plumes on surfaces which are enveloped by the plume. To accomplish the objective of correct plume simulation, the similarity parameters developed by Herron and the requirement to match momentum flux per unit area between the model and the full-scale systems, were applied to the orbiter and booster propulsion systems.
