Notes: The effects of mixing on the critical mean holding time for washout and the steady state performance of growth processes in continuous flow reactors are investigated. Macromixing, micromixing, and cell recycle arc considered. The tanks-in-series model composed of N completely mixed flow reactors, the dispersion model, the plug flow model, and a combined model composed of a plug flow reactor and a continuous stirred tank flow reactor connected in series arc used to represent the macro-mixing or residence time distribution. The extreme cases of micromixing, namely, complete segregation and maximum mixedness, as well as intermediate states of micromixing are investigated to determine their effects on washout and the occurence of multiple steady states. A technique for predicting the maximum mixedness washout condition from a knowledge of the residence time distribution is presented and used to determine the washout condition for the dispersion model under maximum mixedness conditions.

Notes: Interaction of macromixing and micromixing in microbiological flow reactors based on a kinetic model of the Michaelis-Menten type has been treated by considering two general types of flow systems: the system of n continuous stirred-tank reactors in series (n-CSTR's in series) and the series combination of a plug-flow reactor and a continuous stirred-tank reactor. Systematic schemes to describe the micromixing conditions of a reactor system are presented. Additional micromixing states are considered besides those proposed by Kramers and those proposed by Zwietering if the systems are employed as empirical models of a flow system. When the number of stirred-reactor units in the system of n-CSTR's in series is small, micromixing has a significant effect on the growth processes. As the number of reactor units increases, the micromixing effect on the growth processes decreases. The effect of micromixing is also important for a system described by a series combination of a plug-flow reactor and a continuous stirred reactor. In addition, the exit concentrations from the system having the same residence time distribution and the same degree of segregation may be different from each other. Information obtained in this study is pertinent in the design of biological flow reactors and sewage treatment systems.

Notes: A liquid culture system, for haemopoietic cells, has been developed using bone marrow cells alone, or co-cultures of thymus and bone marrow cells, inoculated into four ounce medical bottles. After several days growth, such cultures consisted of an attaching population of cells, forming discrete colonies, and a non-attaching population. In the (co-cultures) there was a 2 X enhancement of monolayer colony development compared with the combined total present in the (marrow alone) plus (thymus alone) cultures. Also, better maintenance of non-attaching cells was seen in the (co-cultures). Normal CFUS and CFUC were present in both the (marrow alone) and the (co-cultures) for at least 14 days.In the (marrow alone) cultures, granulocytes in all stages of development were present for the first week, but by 12 days the culture consisted mainly of mono-nuclear cells. In the (co-cultures), however, at 12 days more than 60% of the cells were granulocytes, in all stages of differentiation. (Co-cultures) established using lethally irradiated thymus cells were not able to support this prolonged myeloid differentiation.By feeding the (co-cultures) it was possible to maintain production of (granulocytic) cells for at least ten weeks, although no fully mature granulocytes were observed. After the second feeding, no CFUS were detectable, but variable numbers of agar colony forming cells (not classical CFUC) were present at least for ten weeks.

Notes: A quasi-relativistic approach to the MO-LCAO method is formulated taking into account the relativistic effects with an accuracy up to (v/c)2 terms, the relativistic part of the electronic interaction in the Hamiltonian being neglected. In the framework of this approximation a set of SCF equations of the Roothaan form is derived; here only the relativistic analogue to the closed shell systems with one-determinant wave functions is considered. In so doing three types of relativistic corrections arise which are quite similar to those of the Pauli equation for one-electron atoms. The new matrix elements appearing due to these corrections can be reduced to some common integrals, which have to be calculated with relativistic radial atomic functions. The method allows a semi-empirical approach to the problem and does not require the Dirac four-component atomic functions (unknown in the most cases), thus making possible approximate quasi-relativistic electronic structure calculations of heavy-atom compounds.

Notes: The formation of 3-(α-cyanoarylidene)phthalides 1a-g, by interaction of benzyl cyanides with phthalic anhydrides was studied under various conditions. The by-products, accompanying 3-(α-cyanobenzal)phthalide 1a, were identified as phthalimide, benzalphthalide 2 and 3-(α-carbamoylbenzal)phthalide 6.

Notes: Both 5-aminobenzothiophene and 5-aminobenz-1,2,3-thiadiazole condense readily with 2,4-dinitrochlorobenzene to give dinitroanilino derivatives which provide after partial reduction the aminonitroanilino derivatives. Treatment of these o-diamines with the proper reagents affords triazole and imidazole derivatives. Oxidation of 4-arylazo-5-aminobenzothiophene or benz-1,2,3-thiadiazole yields the corresponding triazole derivatives.

Description / Table of Contents: The methyl methacrylate polymerization initiated by anion-radicals of aromatic hydrocarbons biphenyl, naphthalene, 2-phenyl naphthalene, phenanthrene, anthracene, and acenaphthylene have been studied by IR spectroscopy. From the IR spectra of the reaction mixtures as well as from the UV spectra of the polymers obtained conclusions on the initiation mechanism were drawn.

Notes: Fixation of colicin E3 to sensitive bacteria is followed, after a lag of 2 to 6 min, by the rapid degradation of all the RNA of the 30S ribosomal subunits, yielding a large 15.5S fragment and a smaller fragment, containing the 3′-terminal end of the 16S RNA. The small RNA fragment which was estimated to consist of about 52 nucleotides, was retained within the 30S subunit in vivo and was subsequently recovered quantitatively without apparent further degradation. Kinetic studies of the cleavage of 16S RNA indicated that this is the primary and lethal effect of colicin E3 and the primary cause of the observed inhibition of protein synthesis in vivo. Small amounts of an RNA fragment, apparently identical in size to the small E3-fragment, were also isolated from 30S particles obtained from untreated bacteria.
