Notes: Accurate integrated intensities for the Bragg reflexion of neutrons from two single crystals of SrF2 have been measured at temperatures between 295 and 1043 °K. Corrections for extinction and thermal diffuse scattering were applied and the experimental data were analysed in terms of a model which includes both harmonic and anharmonic components in the thermal vibrations of the atoms. Significant contributions from the third-order anharmonic term, βF, in the one-particle potential of the fluorine atoms, consistent with their tetrahedral site symmetry, were observed at all temperatures. At 773 °K significant anisotropic fourth-order components, δSr and δF, became apparent in the thermal vibration of both the strontium and the fluorine atoms. At this temperature βF was refined to - 3.45 ( ± 0.11) × 10-12 erg Å-3, with δSr = 1.30 ( ± 0.75) × 10-12 erg Å-4 and δF = 0.84 (± 0.29) × 10-12 erg Å-4. The positive signs of the parameters δSr and δF result from the influence of Coulombic forces on the atomic vibrations.

Notes: A neutron monochromator system is described which provides a choice of seven wavelengths in the range 0.88 to 2.63 Å and a facility for changing rapidly from one to another. Symmetrical transmission geometry is used for reflections in the [110] zone of a `squashed' germanium crystal and the wavelength is changed by a simple rotation of the crystal in its own plane. Experimental studies have confirmed the advantages which such a system can have for powder diffraction measurements when different experiments have different requirements in terms of the sin&thgr;/λ range and the angular resolution.

Notes: Accurate neutron-diffraction measurements from crystals suffering from severe extinction have been used to test the recent general theory of extinction of Zachariasen (Acta Cryst. (1967). 23, 558). Analysis of these measurements indicates that certain of the approximations made in the theory are not generally valid and result in systematic deviations between theory and experiment, namely a marked angle-dependent effect and an inadequacy of the theory for strong extinction. The original theory is therefore extended to take these factors into account and to give agreement with the observed data.

Notes: Absorption corrections for cylindrical and spherical crystals have been evaluated by numerical integration for values of μR in the range 0 to 1.0, where μ is the mean linear absorption coefficient and R is the radius of the crystal. For this range of μR, which is that normally required for neutron diffraction data, interpolation from existing tables is unsatisfactory. The transmission factor Ahkl is tabulated as a function of μRand sin2θ, accurate to four decimal places. The intervals chosen for the tabulation are such that linear interpolation may be used for intermediate values. Analytical expressions, which may be used for calculating the transmission factor when a lower accuracy is acceptable, are also given.

Notes: In a recent paper Hubbard, Quicksall & Jacobson [Acta Cryst. (1972). A28, 236–245] describe a highly efficient white-radiation neutron-diffraction technique. The present note discusses some of the problems which arise from the use of such techniques in the light of recent measurements at Harwell and emphasizes that, because of these problems, structure determination using white-beam techniques is less reliable than that possible using conventional monochromatic beam techniques.

Notes: Accurate integrated intensities for the Bragg reflexion of neutrons by crystals of ZnS and ZnTe have been measured at room temperature. Measurements were made at a number of wavelengths and corrections were made for extinction and thermal diffuse scattering. The experimental data show contributions arising from third-order anharmonic thermal vibration of the ions. However, it is shown that, although both types of ion have a tetrahedral site symmetry and can thus give rise to such anharmonic contributions, only a single anharmonicity parameter can be determined from the neutron measurements. The magnitude of the anharmonicity parameter is similar to that obtained for the fluorine ions in CaF2, SrF2 and BaF2. The nuclear scattering amplitude of zinc was refined to bzn = 0.569 (2) × 10−12 cm, assuming a value for the nuclear scattering amplitude of sulphur of bs = 0.2847 (1) × 10−12 cm.

Notes: An analysis of recent single-crystal X-ray diffraction measurements on calcium fluoride has been carried out by comparing the observed data with those calculated from a theoretical model. A computer program was used which can refine parameters for extinction and anharmonic thermal vibrations in addition to the conventional parameters. It is shown that for the majority of the experiments in the recent ACA project the angle-dependent deviations between the experiments are consistent with those which would be expected due to a variation in the measured contributions from thermal diffuse scattering. There are discrepancies between experiments for the strongest reflexions, presumably because of errors associated with the use of attenuators, but if these reflexions are excluded the agreement between experiments, allowing for variations in the thermal diffuse scattering contributions, is much better than was indicated by previous analyses. The two remaining experiments and that reported by Zachariasen are in poor agreement with the others and this is attributed to the techniques used, namely an ω-scan with balanced filters in one case and a stationary-crystal, stationary-detector technique in the other two. Although the effects of anharmonicity on the X-ray intensities are rather small, the data from all experiments are consistent with the magnitude of an anharmonic thermal-vibration parameter, associated with the fluorine atoms, derived from neutron-diffraction measurements.

Notes: The recent X-ray diffraction data front Mg2Si, obtained by Panke & Wölfel (Z. Kristallogr. (1969), 129, 9) show systematic differences in the structure factors from those predicted by a model which assumes harmonic thermal vibration of the atoms. These differences indicate an anharmonic component in the thermal vibration of the magnesium atoms, consistent with their tetrahedral site symmetry. An analysis of these data has therefore been carried out in terms of a model which includes anharmonic thermal vibration and a least-squares refinement gave a value of the anharmonicity parameter (βMg = − 2.39 × 10−12 erg.Å−3) which is similar in magnitude to those found for other systems with the fluorite structure.
