Notes: Summary With total ozone sensors on earth-orbitung satellites the ozone distribution over the entire earth may be measured daily. The conclusions from some of the Nimbus III measurements are discussed in this paper. A comparison of time-longitude variations of stratospheric radiance values at 60°S with values of the total ozone indicated that low (high) radiance values correspond very closely with the low (high) total ozone amounts. The speed at which these ozone ‘waves’ progress eastward is greatest in the winter hemisphere. The speed of eastward progression decreases as one approaches the lower latitudes in the winter hemisphere. In the equatorial region the progression of the ozone ‘waves’ appears to be slowly westward. In the Northern Hemisphere the waves progress slowly eastward during summer. The intensity of the ozone ‘waves’ was also observed to change with latitude. These temporal and spatial fluctuations are related mainly to the motion of dynamic tropospheric systems. The extremely tight ozone gradients, which may be seen in the winter hemisphere data, have been shown to be associated with strong baroclinic zones in the lower stratosphere and upper troposphere, which are moving eastward. Assuming uniform zonal velocity we found Rossby wavelengths that varied from 2500 to 3700 km.

Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung Benzol-Rohextrakte von 6 Nicht-Wirtsbäumen riefen allein bei erwachsenen Scolytus multistriatus (Marsh.) keine Fraßreaktionen hervor.
Notes: Abstract Crude benzene extracts of 6 non-host trees alone did not stimulate feeding responses by adults of Scolytus multistriatus (Marsh.). When combined equally with a stimulatory extract from Ulmus americana L., all of the crude non-host extracts reduced the amount of feeding which otherwise occurred. At least two of the non-hosts (Populus deltoides Bartr. and Aesculus octandra Marsh) contained positive short-range orientational stimuli, but their induction of a positive response by the insect was prevented in most treatments by associated deterrent chemicals. Thus, stimuli (deterrents and repellents) played the dominant role in eliciting the rejection of crude non-host extracts by the beetles.

Notes: Conclusions The analytical method described here will allow the preparation of corn plant tissue, the extraction of 4-aminopyridine from it, purification of the residues, and identification and estimation of the purified residue by thin-layer and gas-liquid chromatography using two dissimilar columns and two detection means — electron capture and microcoulometric nitrogen detectors. The method is sensitive to levels of 4-aminopyridine as low as 0.01 ppm.

Notes: Summary Surface ozone data were obtained during September 1969 at an elevation of 3658 meters in the Colorado Rocky Mountains. These data indicate an early morning maximum and an early afternoon minimum of ozone. The data suggest that during the day air is brought to, the mountain top from below that is ozonedepleted. This would account for the distinct minimum of ozone in the afternoon. During the dark period the mountain criculation pattern is reversed and a maximum of ozone is seen.

Notes: Summary This paper contains the mathematical validation of a new approach to mathematical programming problems based on a penalty function method. The given problem is replaced by a second „auxiliary“ problem which, in many cases may be solved by standard methods since it involves the maximization of a concave function of a single variable over an interval. The auxiliary problem is defined implicitly in therms of the constituents of the original problem. Examples are presented in order to illustrate the theoretical results.
