Description: Pontiac fever affected ten men who had cleaned a steam turbine condenser with compressed air. Previous epidemics of Pontiac fever and Legionnaires' disease--both caused by Legionella Pneumophila (proposed sp. nov.)--involved "airborne spread" from air-conditioning cooling towers or evaporative condensers. Aerosols of contaminated water in heat-rejection systems appear to be important sources of epidemic legionellosis.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Notes: 〈/span〉Fraser, D W -- Deubner, D C -- Hill, D L -- Gilliam, D K -- New York, N.Y. -- Science. 1979 Aug 17;205(4407):690-1.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Record origin:〈/span〉 〈a href="http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/462175" target="_blank"〉PubMed〈/a〉

Description: Spectral observations of the central region of the Eta Carinae nebula at 4 microns have measured the Brackett-alpha hydrogen recombination-line intensity. The bulk of the line and continuum radiation arises in a small central source which is slightly narrower in the line radiation and is barely resolved by the employed beamwidth of 3.4 arcsec. The continuum radiation is well-fitted by an exponential relation to a distance of 10 arcsec from the central source. The line intensity requires a central source which emits 10 to the 49th power ionizing photons per sec into a region of electron density greater than 1 million per cu cm.

Description: To observe the medium energy component of the intense galactic center gamma-ray emission, two balloon flights of a medium energy gamma-ray spark chamber telescope were flown in Brazil in 1975. The results indicate the emission is higher than previously thought and above the predictions of a theoretical model proposed.

Description: Automated instruments were installed on a commercial B-747 aircraft, during the program, to obtain baseline data and to monitor key atmospheric constituents associated with emissions of aircraft engines in order to determine if aircraft are contributing to pollution of the upper atmosphere. Data thus acquired on a global basis over the commercial air routes for 5 to 10 years will be analyzed. Ozone measurements in the 29,000 to 45,000 foot altitude were expanded over what has been available from ozonesondes. Limited aerosol composition measurements from filter samples show low levels of sulfates and nitrates in the upper troposphere. Recently installed instruments for measurement of carbon monoxide and condensation nuclei are beginning to return data.

Description: A single stage compressor was designed with the intent of demonstrating that, for a tip speed and hub-tip ratio typical of an advanced core compressor front stage, the use of low aspect ratio can permit high levels of blade loading to be achieved at an acceptable level of efficiency. The design pressure ratio is 1.8 at an adiabatic efficiency of 88.5 percent. Both rotor and stator have multiple-circular-arc airfoil sections. Variable IGV and stator vanes permit low speed matching adjustments. The design incorporates an inlet duct representative of an engine transition duct between fan and high pressure compressor.

Description: The results of a program of experimental and analytical research in casing treatments over axial compressor rotor blade tips are presented. Circumferential groove, axial-skewed slot and blade angle slot treatments were tested at low speeds. With the circumferential groove treatment the stalling flow was reduced 5.8% at negligible efficiency sacrifice. The axial-skewed slot treatment improved the stalling flow by 15.3%; 1.8 points in peak efficiency were sacrificed. The blade angle slot treatment improved the stalling flow by 15.0%; 1.4 points in peak efficiency were sacrificed. The favorable stalling flow situations correlated well with observations of higher-than-normal surface pressures on the rotor blade pressure surfaces in the tip region, and with increased maximum diffusions on the suction surfaces. Annulus wall pressure gradients, especially in the 50 to 75% chord region, are also increased and blade surface pressure loadings are shifted toward the trailing edge for treated configurations.

Description: Results are presented for a detailed study of the peculiar elliptical galaxy NGC 5128 (Cen A), based on computer video analysis of several photographic plates of exceptional quality reduced to the standard UBV system. The picture-processing results and the measured properties of the elliptical and gaseous-disk components of NGC 5128 are examined, along with the distribution, spectral characteristics, and chemical composition of the H II regions in the disk. The data show that NGC 5128 consists of a giant E2 galaxy containing a significant amount of gas and dust situated predominantly in an equatorial disk where vigorous star formation is occurring. Reasons why NGC 5128 is so different from giant ellipticals in clusters are considered.

Description: Red stellar objects for which V-1 was greater than a value of about 2 (supm). 5 were extracted from photographs of 23 program fields. Tabular data for each field show the object name; the 1950 epoch right ascension, declination, galactic longitude, galactic latitude; radial distance from field venter in decimal degrees; color classes; and objects ordered by redness.

Description: Observations with the HEAO 1 scanning modulation collimator (MC) have yielded improved locations for the centroids of X-ray sources in clusters of galaxies dominated by a giant central galaxy. For A85, A478, A1795, A2029, A2199, A2319 A, and SC 0316-444, these positions are consistent with those of the clusters' dominant cD galaxies. By comparing the HEAO 1 MC flux with that obtained with the HEAO 1 A-2 experiment, estimates of the X-ray sizes for these clusters have been obtained. The correlation of these sizes with other cluster properties is discussed.

Description: Continuum observations of 23 extragalactic objects have been made at a wavelength of 1 mm; nine of the 23 have been definitely detected at this wavelength. The sources detected include seven from which the 1-mm emission appears to be nonthermal, and two from which the emission appears to be thermal radiation from dust. Repeated observations of the brightest nonthermal sources permitted a search for 1-mm variations on time scales of one month to three years. BL Lac was observed to vary by more than a factor of 2 in flux, and 3C 84, 3C 120, and 3C 273 showed possible variations; 3C 279 showed no variations greater than + or - 30%. The 1-mm variations of BL Lac appear to be correlated with variations at radio wavelengths. The other sources with nonthermal spectra detected were 3C 111 and M87; the two thermal sources detected were NGC 253 and M82. Comparison of the latter two 1-mm measurements with 2.6-mm CO measurements suggests that the CO line in these galaxies is not heavily saturated.
