    Notes: Abstract Nitrogen transport in a 2 km-long, spring-fed stream was studied during the summer months by analyzing weekly water samples from four stations. The water at the spring had a consistently high level of nitrate-N ranging from about 7 mg/l in late spring to about 3 mg/l in early fall. However, over the length of the stream, 60% (about 97 kg) of the incoming nitrate-N is lost from the water during the summer period. The loss, which does not appear to be attributable to the uptake by aquatic macrophytes or to immobilization, is thought to result from denitrification.

    Description: For qualitative analysis of atmospheric particulates by microscopy, the sampling device should preserve the particles in the state existing at the moment of capture. A collector is described that uses electrostatic precipitation to capture and disperse specimens on various substrates for direct insertion into microscopes. Sampling runs in various atmospheres are described. Micrographs are presented to show particle morphology and distribution on the substrates. Chemical identification by X-ray energy probe and electron diffraction is illustrated.

    Description: Mouse mammary tumors heated by water bath or by microwave-induced hyperthermia exhibit a response that varies sharply with treatment temperature; therefore, uniform heating of the tumor is essential to quantitate the biological response as a function of temperature. C3H tumors implanted on the mouse flank were easily heated to uniformities within 0.1 C by using water baths. Cold spots up to 1 C below the desired treatment temperature were observed in the same tumors implanted on the hind leg. These cold spots were attributed to cooling by major blood vessels near the tumor. In this case temperature uniformity was achieved by the deposition of 2450 MHz microwave energy into the tumor volume by using parallel-opposed applicators.
