Notizen: A systematic study of the effect of potassium hydroxide on the autoxidation of poly(propylene oxide)s with number average molecular weights, M̄n, in the range 400-3000 has been made in the range of temperature 110-140°C. For all the polymers a considerable increase in the induction time was produced by KOH in solution in the polymer, the increase being most marked for the polymer of lowest molecular weight. For the polymers of molecular weight 1000 and lower, the rate of the subsequent autoxidation was considerably reduced by the KOH, the effect being greatest for the polymer of molecular weight 400. For polymers of molecular weight 2000 and above no change in rate was observed. The effectiveness of KOH as an antioxidant is shown to depend on the concentration of terminal hydroxyl groups and is explained by the non-radical decomposition of RO-2 ions.

Notizen: A series of six Hytrel/PVC blends were prepared by solution blending Hytrel in methylene chloride and PVC in tetrahydrofuran. The samples were subsequently prepared in sheet form by hot pressing at 170°C. Physical and mechanical properties of the homopolymers and the blends were investigated. The copolyester homopolymer is a partly crystalline elastomeric material. The level of crystallinity was measured by x-ray diffraction and the sensitivity of this level to heat treatments and quenching determined by DSC. A Morgan pulse propagation meter was used to measure sonic velocity and, indirectly, acoustic impedance of the blends. Dynamic mechanical studies indicated that blends containing 25%-50% by weight of Hytrel were completely compatible in the sense that a single glass transition was observed; but as the Hytrel level was increased to 60% and 65%, a shoulder became apparent on the low-temperature side of the glass transition peak. At 80% Hytrel, two peaks were observed, indicating incompatibility. The glass transition temperatures of these blends were found to decrease linearly with added Hytrel.

Notizen: A mechanical device for the continuous purification of biological material using immunosorbent was developed. The system consists of heat-sealed nylon pouches containing agarose-bound antibody, attached to an endless 35 mm wide Mylar belt that passes through four chambers sequentially. The biological material is bound and dissociated, and the immobilized antibody is regenerated for repeated isolation and purification of antigen. The belt design incorporates features to minimize carry-over between chambers and prevent damage to the agarose-bound antibody in repeated passes through the system. An existing batch method for the purification of human placental alkaline phosphatase using immobilized rabbit antisera was adapted to continuous purification in the device. The belt contained a low affinity immunosorbent and made five complete passes through the system. A decrease in antigen binding capacity between free immunosorbent suspensions and belt immunosorbent in pouches was observed. This was shown to be the result of the diffusion resistance offered by the pouch and the short exposure times of each pouch in the chambers. A decrease in antigen binding capacity between successive belt passes was also observed, and resulted from the inability of the agarose in the pouches to resuspend completely after each pass. The low efficiency of the agitation method and the roller device used to squeeze the pouches were the reasons for this deficiency.

Notizen: Bench scale packed columns were used to study the kinetic behavior of biological denitrification. After tracer studies were run to determine flow characteristics, steady state nitrate profiles were determined. A first-order rate expression with an Arrhenius temperature dependence is an adequate model of the reaction for nitrate-nitrogen concentrations of 〈 100 mg/l and temperature of 5° to 20°C. The rate constants are proportional to the packing surface area.

Notizen: Three preparative-scale gel permeation chromatography columns were constructed and filled with Corning porous-glass packing materials. Each column was packed with a different pore-size materials, CPG 10-2000, CPG 10-350, CPG 10-120, all of which had been treated with hexamethyldisilazane. An additional preparative-scale column packed with Styragel, nominal porosity 5 × 104 Å, was added to complete the column bank. Polystyrene standards were used to investigate the effects of molecular weight and sample concentration upon elution volume. A commerical polystyrene sample was fractionated using this system to study the effects of sample concentration and flow rate on fractionation efficiency. These fractions were analyzed by high-resolution analyticalscale gel permeation chromatography. Where possible, the results have been compared with similar studies that used Porasil (Spherosil) and Styragel columns.

Notizen: In the present study the conditions leading to tight binding of human serum albumin to the Amberlite XAD-7 resin without the use of chemical coupling agents have been defined. Optimal binding (10.97 mm/kg dry XAD-7) was achieved at pH 5.0 and adsorption conformed to a Langmuir isotherm. Theoretical analysis of the data suggest adsorption of a monolayer of albumin which is suported by the absence of visual surface coating on scanning electron micrographs. Binding of human serum albumin was reduced when two chemical coupling agents, glutaraldehyde and carbodiimide were included in the human serum albumin solution, the elution of adsorbed HSA from the resins under severe flow conditions was reduced, and the amount eluted was minimal in all instances.

Beschreibung: The Ariel 4 satellite was designed to study wave-particle phenomena in the magnetosphere by measuring the electromagnetic wave fields over a wide frequency range and the fluxes and pitch angle distributions of energetic particles. We describe here the results of a preliminary study of the various v.l.f./e.l.f. electromagnetic wave phenomena which are observed. These include man-made signals from v.l.f. transmitters, impulsive noise originating in thunderstorms and emissions arising from magnetospheric energetic charged particles.

Beschreibung: Simultaneous observations of magnetic pulsations have been made by three geostationary satellites carrying similar magnetometers and acting as an azimuthal array. Autospectral and cross-spectral analysis yields coherence and phase differences between the pulsations at the satellite positions. The majority of the data fit the Kelvin-Helmholtz generation mechanism. The azimuthal wave number changes sign near noon and corresponds to propagation away from noon. Usually, the wave number is less than 10 deg per degree of longitude. Later in the afternoon, however, strong pulsations are observed with low coherence, implying large wave numbers. This suggests an instability driven by a gradient in the intensity of energetic protons, which may be expected at this local time. The data also suggest that some of the observed phase difference between the azimuthal components is due to small separations in magnetic shell, whereas this is not the case for the radial components. This implies a localized field-line resonance.
