    Notes: Abstract Sources of149Nd were produced by thermal-neutron irradiation of enriched148Nd. High resolution Ge(Li) spectrometers were used to collect gamma-ray singles and coincidence spectra in the study of the decay of 1.7-h149Nd. A total of 214 gamma rays have been assigned to the decay of149Nd, and 201 of these transitions have been placed in a level scheme of149Pm involving 42 excited states. Absolute values for the beta-group intensities were determined for transitions to the149Pm levels, and spin and parity assignments were made for many of the observed states. The experimentally determined level structure of149Pm was compared with corresponding levels in other odd-mass Pm and Eu nuclides. Interpretations were made in terms of the core-coupling model.     Notes: Abstract The half life of the 376.7-keV level in111 Ag, populated in the decay of111 Pd isomers, has been determined to be 16±1 ns. Compton-suppressed γ-ray spectra and γγ coincidence spectra have also been taken. These data, combined with recent charged-particle transfer data establish 3/2+ as the spin and parity of the 376.7-keV111Ag level. Our observed lifetime and γ-ray branching can be interpreted as strong indications of shape isomerism in111Ag similar to that found in odd-mass In nuclides.

    Notes: Abstract The23Na NMR first order quadrupolar satellite lines are detected and studied in AgNa(NO2)2 single crystals near the paraelectric-ferroelectric phase transition. Although the intensities of the satellites are small the components of the electric field gradient tensor (EFG) at the23Na sites could be deduced from the angular dependence of the first order quadrupolar line splitting with respect to rotations around the three crystallographic axes by applying the Volkoff method. In the paraelectric phase the principal axes system of the EFG coincides with the crystallographic axes system whereas in the ferroelectric phase there is a strongly temperature dependent small non diagonal elementφ xz (T). The EFG principal componentsφ xx andφ yy are strongly influenced whereas the EFG principal componentφ zz is nearly not affected by the ferroelectric phase transition. The observed temperature dependences of the EFG components are related to the temperature variation of the normalized spontaneous polarizationS(T) by assuming a coupling term which is quadratic inS(T). Finally the problem of the intensities of the satellite lines is discussed.

    Notes: Abstract A computer model based on Monte Carlo techniques was developed to simulate the destruction of lunar rocks by ‘catastrophic rupture’ due to meteoroid impact. Energies necessary to accomplish catastrophic rupture were derived from laboratory experiments. A crater-production rate derived from lunar rocks was utilized to calculate absolute time scales. Calculated median survival times for crystalline lunar rocks are 1.9, 4.6, 10.3, and 22 m.y. for rock masses of 10, 102, 103, and 104 g respectively. Corresponding times of 6, 14.5, 32, and 68 × 106 yr are required, before the probability of destruction reaches 0.99. These results are consistent with absolute exposure ages measured on returned rocks. Some results also substantiate previous conclusions reached by others: the catastrophic rupture process is significantly more effective in obliterating lunar rocks compared to mass wasting by single particle abrasion. The view is also corroborated that most rocks presently on the lunar surface are either exhumed from the regolith or fragments of much larger boulders, rather than primary ejecta excavated from pristine bedrock.

    Description / Table of Contents: Summary The stomach of the wild boar contained a large quantity of regular and red coloured toxic wheat. This toxic wheat caused the death of the animal; also in the stomach there was found 26 adult mice. This is the first time such a large number of mice has been reported from the stomach of the wild boar.
    Abstract: Résumé Dans l'estomac d'un sanglier mort on a découvert, outre un mélange de graines de froment et de graines rouges traitées au poison qui avaient entraîné la mort de l'animal, un total de 26 souris adultes. Une représentation aussi forte de souris dans la nourriture animale du Sanglier n'a jamais été signalée.
    Notes: Zusammenfassung Ein verendet aufgefundenes Stück Schwarzwild hatte neben einer großen Menge von Saatweizen und rot gefärbtem Giftweizen, der zum Tode des Tieres geführt hatte, insgesamt 26 ausgewachsene Mäuse im Magen. Ein derart hoher Anteil von Mäusen wurde bisher für die animalische Nahrung des Schwarzwildes nicht beschrieben.

    Notes: Abstract Analytical expressions for the change of the elastic constants due to the superconducting phase transition are derived within the framework of the micromagnetic theory of superconductivity. In particular, the variation of the shear modulus in the environment of a single vortex is discussed, which is important for the second-order interaction (ΔE effect) between flux lines and crystal dislocations. Furthermore, the change of elastic moduli in the mixed state, as caused by the periodic flux line lattice, is investigated, and its field dependence is studied. Numerical values for the material parameters that describe the strain dependence of the critical fieldH c and the critical temperatureT c are presented for Nb and Nb 3 Sn.

    Notes: The elementary dielastic interaction force (δE effect) between crystal dislocations (screw and edge dislocations) and one flux line as well as the flux line lattice is investigated by means of the phenomenological Ginzburg—Landau theory. The dependence of the maximum pinning force on the reduced induction b ≡; B/B c2 is calculated. It turns out that the dielastic pinning force increases with decreasing coherence length ξ, p δE ∫ 1/ ξ and therefore becomes especially large for the technologically important high-field superconductors. Numerical values for the maximum pinning force are presented for Nb and Nb3Sn.

    Description / Table of Contents: Summary Losses of wild animals by drowning in artificial waterways have induced the “Wasser- und Schiffahrtsdirektion Hannover” on the occasion of the reconstruction of the Mittellandkanal to carry out an investigation with the aim of making it easier for swimming animals and young birds to leave the water by way of special constructions on the banks. They experimented in a swimming-pool with animals of various species and sizes — amphibinns, reptiles, birds and mammals. Landing devices sloping evenly up to the bank from 0.5 m below the water surface appeared to be particularly suitable for the wild animals found in the Federal Republic of Germany. It was found that special landing holes could be connected to these sloping walls for small animals. An attractive effect of bank vegetation was found after tests on a canal using an artificial arrangement of plants. It is proposed to construct the canal wall in a combination of embankment and sheetpiling walls — a technical-biological bank construction. The laying out of “wild animal bays” is suggested for certain stretches of canal. These would be supplemented by small animal exits in the intervening sections. A purely artificial bank construction would be a danger to all living things, especially for the needs of wildlife and landscape protection, and also for human recreation. An artificial/biological bank construction is recommended as having an important role to play in ecology.
    Abstract: Résumé Les pertes par noyade d'animaux-gibier, enregistrées dans les cours d'eau dont les berges ont été aménagées, ont amené les autorités de Hannovre, lors de l'aménagement du Mittelland-Kanal, à engager une recherche sur les dispositifs qu'il y aurait lieu d'installer dans les berges afin de permettre aux espèces terrestres et aux jeunes oiseaux capables de nager de quitter les plans d'eau. On procéda à des essais dans un bassin de natation au moyen d'animaux de différentes espèces et de différentes tailles — amphibiens, reptiles, oiseaux et mammifères. Il apparut que des rampes de sortie, partant à 0,50 m (valeur indicative) sous le niveau de l'eau et s'élevant jusqu'à la berge grâce à un plan incliné, convenaient dans ce but. Pour des animaux de petite taille, un dispositif spécial à fixer sur les parois de la bonde fit sespreuves. Lors d'essais dans un canal, on put, grâce à un leurre, rendre attractive la végétation rivulaire. Un aménagement bio-technique des rives combinant talus et paroi à bonde est donc proposé. Pour certains tronçons de canaux, on propose l'aménagement de petites anses; celles-ci sont à compléter, sur les tronçons intermédiaires, par les dispositifs spécialement conçus pour les animaux de petite taille. On indique les dangers, pour l'ensemble du monde vivant, d'aménagements purement techniques des berges, en particulier en ce qui concerne les intérêts de la protection de la nature, de la faune, du paysage et de la récréation humaine. On en vient donc à recommander un aménagement bio-technique des berges, lequel peut jouer à son tour un rôle important dans l'écosystème.
    Notes: Zusammenfassung Verluste von Wildtieren durch Ertrinken in Gewässern mit technisch verbauten Ufern haben anläßlich des Neuausbaues des Mittellandkanales die Wasser- und Schiffahrtsdirektion Hannover zu einer Untersuchung veranlaßt, mit dem Ziel, schwimmenden Landtieren und Jungvögeln das Verlassen des Gewässers durch besondere Uferverbauungen zu ermöglichen. In einem Schwimmbecken wurde mit Tieren verschiedener Arten und Körpergrößen-Amphibien, Reptilien, Vögel, Säuger-experimentiert. Als geeignet für Wildtiere, die in der Bundesrepublik Deutschland vorkommen, wurden Aussteigevorrichtungen befunden, die 0,5 m (Richtwert) unter dem Wasserspiegel beginnen und zum Ufer hin flach ansteigen. Für kleine Tiere wurden an Spundwänden zu befestigende „Kleintierausstiege” als geeignet befunden. Eine attraktive Wirkung von Ufervegetation wurde in Versuchen in einem Kanal mit Hilfe einer Attrappe ermittelt. Vorgeschlagen wird die Durchführung einer „kombinierten Böschungs-Spundwandbauweise”, einer technischbiologischen Uferverbauung. Für besondere Kanalabschnitte wird die Anlage von „Wildtierbuchten” vorgeschlagen. Diese sind in den Zwischenabschnitten durch „Kleintierausstiege” zu ergänzen. Es wird hingewiesen auf die Gefahren einer rein technischen Uferverbauung für die gesamte belebte Welt, insbesondere für die Belange des Naturschutzes, Tierschutzes, Landschaftsschutzes und der menschlichen Erholung. Unter diesen Aspekten wird eine technisch-biologische Uferverbauung empfohlen, die eine wichtige Rolle im Ökosystem übernehmen kann.

    Notes: Abstract The heat capacity of a single crystal of the uniaxial ferroelectric AgNa(NO2)2 was measured close to the nearly tricritical phase transition. In the ferroelectric phase a strong temperature dependence of the anomaleous specific heat is found which obeys a temperature law (θ f —T)−0.494. A small latent heat was detected nearT c. The thermal behaviour of AgNa(NO2)2 is described by a Landau type theory, from which the non linear coefficientsζ andζ of the free energy expansion are derived. The thermal data fit well to the known dielectric behaviour.
