Notes: Abstract In this paper we develop stability criteria applicable to Eigen's model for the selection and evolution of biological macromolecules. We show that it is possible to characterize the time evolution of the macromolecular system by Lyapounov-like functionals. The Lyapounov method is used to discuss the general stability of the system and the metastable nature of the selected states are discussed.

Notes: Abstract We consider a method for selection among a collection of self-reproducing macromolecular information carriers. The information carriers are assumed subject to the general constraint in which the fluxes of the energy rich monomers used in the syntheses of the information carriers are controlled externally. The constraint forces a competition among the various macromolecular species and a Darwinian like selection takes place. We show that the overall selective behaviour is independent of the specific form of the constraint. A general criteria for selection is given and we show that the selection process may generally be characterized by an optimization principle.

Notes: Abstract We consider some models for selection in self-reproducing macromolecular systems subject to time varying environmental constraints. We show that many of the results concerning selection obtained previously for stationary constraints may be generalized and that the over-all selective behaviour even in complex enzyme coupled systems is basically the same under the time varying external conditions as it is in the stationary case.

Notes: Abstract In this paper we examine a set of nonlinear rate equations (devised by M. Eigen (1971)) which describe the process of selection in a collection of self-reproducing, macromolecular information carriers. We construct exact solutions to the equations for the case of constant rate parameters and constant error distributions. The solutions allow the direct assessment of the effect of mutations on the “selective value” parameters discussed by Eigen as well as the distribution of the molecular species selected in steady state. In addition we show that the selection process may be characterized by an extremal principle.

Notes: Abstract In this paper we consider Eigen’s equations for the selection and evolution of self-instructing, macromolecular systems. We construct exact, asymptotic solutions for the equations when the rate coefficients and error distributions are considered as functions of time. Implications for selection are discussed.

Notes: Abstract Temperature profiles from seven regions of the Moon were recorded during a total eclipse using an infrared radiometer and telescope at the Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Alabama. The eclipse was visible from this site from beginning to end. Target areas chosen range from mare areas to mountainous highlands. Theoretical temperature curves were calculated using a thermophysical model in which the lunar material properties are variable. These curves are compared with the experimental data. A description of the instrumentation, observations, calibration, signal reduction, and the theoretical model is given. The results show excellent agreement between the observational and theoretical temperatures during the eclipse. The apparent differences between the observed and calculated temperatures during pre- and post-eclipse are minimal after directional radiation is taken into account.

Notes: Abstract A resistance in thermal equilibrium develops a noise voltage intensity which is directly proportional to the absolute temperature and is given by the well-established formula $$\overline {v_n^2 } = 4R kT\Delta f$$ . A novel circuit is described which uses a quasi-null technique to make the measurement less sensitive to many of the amplifier properties such as gain and bandwidth. The performance of a prototype circuit is given.

Notes: Summary In this paper we consider a model for the selection and evolution of biological macromolecules when their reproduction is based on complementary instruction. The model is an extension of one of Eigen's models for selection and takes in account explicitly the formation of both single stranded and double stranded molecular complexes. We construct exact solutions to the rate equations for the case of constant rate parameters and error distributions. Criteria for selection are discussed.

Notes: Summary By introducing a modified enzyme coupling in Eigen's hypercycle equations we have produced an exactly solvable selfreproductive hypercycle model. The model shows explicitly how collections of different macromolecular information carriers may coexist, through internal couplings, in the presence of constraints. We show how the “selective value” concept is manifested in the model and give simple criteria for selection among competing hypercycles.

Notes: Summary Starting with Eigen's model we discuss some principles pertaining to the selection of biological macromolecules. The principles have a certain analogy to Fisher's fundamental theorem for natural selection.
