    Notes: The values of maximum frequencies, intensities, and other spectral parameters of the main absorption bands of amino acid residue side-chain groups have been obtained in the 1500-1800-cm-1 region for solutions in heavy water at pD 1-12. It is shown that absorption of residues of asparagine, glutamine, aspartic and glutamic acids, arginine, and tyrosine must be taken into account in quantitative studies of the infrared spectra of polypeptide and protein solutions in heavy water. Examples of separating out the amide I band for ribonuclease A in heavy water are given.

    Notes: The 13C, 29Si and 119Sn chemical shifts of 2- and 2,5-substituted organometallic (M=C, Si, Ge, Sn, Pb) derivatives of furan were measured. The most important factors, determining the specific features of the studied spectra, are d-orbital availability and atomic radius of the central atom M, as well as the relatively higher (as compared with benzene) energies of the π-electron energy levels of the furan ring.

    Notes: Extensive 13C and 15N labelling has shown that the molecular ions of 2-, 3- and 4-cyanopyridine with lifetimes up to 10-6 s eliminate hydrogen cyanide originating predominantly from the ring (˜65%). Moreover, this hydrogen cyanide loss occurs after an equilibrated positional interchange of the ring carbon atoms at positions interchange of the ring carbon atoms at positions 2, 4 and 6 via Dewar pyridine structures. In molecular ions with lifetimes of 10-6-10-5 s skeletal rearrangements have taken place in such a way that both nitrogen atoms have become equivalent prior to the loss of hydrogen cyanide. Arguments are put forward that this equivalence of nitrogen atoms is caused by the intermediacy of ions with a 1,4-dicyanobuta-1,3-diene structure. About 60% of these intermediate ions eliminate hydrogen cyanide in a fast process. The remaining 40% of these ions undergo ring closure again to a pyridine ring in which the carbon atoms of positions 2, 4 and 6 are positionally interchanged rapidly via Dewar pyridine structures followed by ring opening again and eventual loss of hydrogen cyanide. This interpretation of the 13C and 15N labelling results is further corroborated by a study of the loss of hydrogen cyanide from molecular ions of 1,4-dicyanobuta-1,3-diene labelled with 13C in both cyano groups.

    Notes: Under electron impact, 3-aryl-4-hydroxyisoquinolines form [M - H]+, [M - CO]+ and [M - H - CO]+ ions with a subsequent elimination of HCN or CH3CN. A cyclic structure for the [M - H]+ ion is suggested. The primary act of fragmentation of the corresponding methyle ether derivatives is the loss of CH3⋅, as well as H⋅; the further fragmentatio is similar to that described above. It has been established that the unusual [M - H]+, [M - OH]+ and [M - CH5⋅]+ ions are formed when 8 fragments. Fragmentation schemes for all compounds are proposed based upon high resolution mass spectra and deuterated analogues.

    Notes: Semiefficient vulcanization systems (semi-EV) are often used when a stock requires good aging properties as well as good fatigue resistance. A partial replacement of sulfur in a conventional cure system with 4,4′-dithiobismorpholine or 2-mercaptabenzothiazyl 4-morpholino disulfide (BMD) is an example of semi-EV system. However, with BMD the scorch time is not always long enough for multisteps involved in the manufacturing of tires. Such new cure retarders as N-(cyclohexylthio)phalimide or N, N′-bis(cyclohexylthio)oxanilide showed very little efficiency in BMD cure systems. This paper describes the usage of new curing agents, (N-morpholinothio)imides, which can overcome the disadvantage of scorchness in BMD cure system and provide excellent aging properties. This is rationalized by the formation of BMD during vulcanization. The facile formation of BMD from N-(4-morpholinothio)phthalimide (MTP) and 2-mercaptobenzothiazole (MBT) serves to illustrate the feasibility of in situ formation of BMD during cure and to explain long scorch time observed with N-(4-morpholinothio)imides.

    Notes: Structural changes in PE films at deformation 2-7% under constant load were studied by molecular probe method. It was shown that at these conditions some structural rearrangements take place which involves more than 20% of polymer volume, only 2-3% being transformed in the state of three-dimensional ordering. The most part of ordering observed was connected with two-dimensional ordering in the AC plane of molecular folding, involving tie chains near the crystallites. The effect of relaxation process during deformation on structural rearrangements in PE films was also investigated.

    Notes: Dacron velour and knit prostheses were compared with respect to long-term patency when used as canine aortic implants. These grafts were rated, according to the average numerical value of six equally weighted criteria, in decreasing order of performance: velour I, velour II, circular knit III, velour IV, circular knit V, warp-knit VI, warp-knit VII and VIII, warp-knit IX and warp-knit X. In general, compacting and crimping methods using halogenated hydrocarbons produced the least successful grafts. Grafts of identical brand but compacted and crimped by different methods exhibited different patencies. No true healing of any of the grafts was observed. Layered deposits of inner fibrous capsule were formed at rates and thicknesses c a acteristic for each type of graft employed. A functioning Dacron femoral-popliteal bypass removed from a human after 9 months exhibited inner and outer fibrous capsules similar to those from canine implants.
