Notizen: Summary Colicin factors are thought to fall into two taxonomic groups which differ in, amongst other properties, the molecular weight of the plasmid DNA and the host range of the colicin protein. This hypothesis is supported by the plasmids found in 26 colicinogenic strains. Two small Col factors may have arisen from larger factors, judging from similarities between their colicins.

Notizen: Summary Pigmented spots have been implicated as potential photoreceptors in many bryozoan larvae which display phototactic behavior. Larvae ofScrupocellaria bertholetti, initially photopositive on release from the brood chambers, have a pair of identical posterolateral pigmented spots and a third morphologically different spot in the anteromedian line. The presumed photoreceptoral organelle in each is composed of numerous unmodified cilia which have the typical 9+2 arrangement of microtubules with electron-dense arms extending from thea-microtubule of each peripheral pair. The posterolateral pigmented spot is composed of two modified coronal cells and a basal sensory cell. Cilia arising from the apical part of this basal cell are aligned vertically. Densely packed pigment vesicles in the three cells form a shield that restricts light entry to one direction. The anteromedian pigmented spot is composed of four cells, two lateral and two posterior. Cilia of the opposing lateral cells are horizontally aligned, whereas cilia of the posterior cells are vertical and curve outward from the oral margin of the pigmented spot. Pigment vesicles are present in all four cells to form a complete shield. Extensions of the larval nervous system are in direct contact with the four cells of the anteromedian spot and the basal cells of the posterolateral spots. The posterolateral pigmented spots share structural and topological similarities with the pigmented spots ofBugula neritina, the only other supposed photoreceptors in lophophorates which have been studied at the ultrastructural level. It is not yet possible to homologize these potential photoreceptors with those of other groups.

    Thema: Biologie
Notizen: Abstract The root of the water fern Azolla is a compact higher-plant organ, advantageous for studies of cell division, cell differentiation, and morphogenesis. The cell complement of A. filiculoides Lam. and A. pinnata R.Br. roots is described, and the lineages of the cell types, all derived ultimately from a tetrahedral apical cell, are characterised in terms of sites and planes of cell division within the formative zone, where the initial cells of the cell files are generated. Subsequent proliferation of the initial cells is highly specific, each cell type having its own programme of divisions prior to terminal differentiation. Both formative and proliferative divisions (but especially the former) occur in regular sequences. Two enantiomorphic forms of root develop, with the dispositions of certain types of cell correlating with the direction, dextrorse or sinistrorse, of the cell-division sequence in the apical cells. Root growth is determinate, the apical cell dividing about 55 times, and its cell-cycle duration decreasing from an initial 10 h to about 4 h during the major phase of root development. Sites of proliferation progress acropetally during aging, but do not penetrate into the zone of formative divisions. The detailed portrait of root development that was obtained is discussed with respect to genetic and epigenetic influences; quantal and non-quantal cell cycles; variation in cell-cycle durations; relationships between cell expansion and cell division: the role of the apical cell; and the limitation of the total number of mitotic cycles during root formation.

    Thema: Biologie
Notizen: Abstract The phosphotungstic acid-chromic acid (PTA-CrO3) stain, putatively specific for the plasma membrane of plants, has been used in an attempt to monitor the distribution of this membrane in a 20,000 x g particulate fraction from Cucurbita hypocotyl hooks. On discontinuous sucrose gradients, the relative distributions of the phytochrome and PTA-CrO3-positive vesicles present in this fraction appear to be correlated. When intact tissue is stained, however, other components, in addition to the plasma membrane, react positively to the stain. These components include prolamellar-body membranes, lipid droplets, and ribosomes. This lack of specificity calls into question the reliability of the technique for the unequivocal identification and accurate quantitation of plasma-membrane fragments in isolated particulate fractions. The present data do not, therefore, provide unambiguous evidence that phytochrome is associated with plasma membrane in tissue homogenates from Cucurbita.

Notizen: Summary Cultivars of T. aestivum crossed onto two lines with male sterility induced by the cytoplasm of T. timopheevi gave a high level of restoration in the F1 generation. The ratio of fertile to sterile plants segregating in the F2 generation was consistent with that expected for a single dominant restorer gene. The possible association between this gene and mildew resistance or some other desirable character derived from ‘CI 12633’, a common ancestor of the cultivars used, is discussed.

Notizen: Summary Biocontent of the above and below-ground parts of ground vegetation in a Danish beech forest was between 1685 and 3025 Kj/m2 (94.57 to 169.43g/m2). Net production as the difference between overall maximum and overall minimum biocontent was 1340 Kj/m2/yr (74.86g/m2/yr); as the sum of differences between species maximum and minimum 1832 Kj/m2/yr (111.49g/m2/yr); and as the sum of calculated losses to litter and biomass change 2759 Kj/m2/yr (160.05g/m2/yr). The data indicate that an estimate based on above ground parts alone would be one-third of those presented. Ground vegetation was a major contributor to litter production.
