    Notes: Early generation yield trials of families from a set of winter wheat crosses were grown in three contrasting environments chosen to represent differences in two important macro-environmental variables affecting the wheat, crop in Eastern England. Joint selection for high yield and low sensitivity to these macro-environmental variables over two seasons using the procedure of Brumpton et al. (1977) resulted in a group of genotypes which exhibited a much wider yield range than would have resulted from selecting for yield in each -environment separately. In spite of this, the top performing lines an yield trials grown in each of the environments during the next season exhibited good yield and stability over all three environments, demonstrating the feasibility of such a method for winter wheat breeding.

    Notes: Summary Restriction enzyme digestion of the ribosomal RNA genes of the nucleolar organisers of wheat has revealed fragment length polymorphisms for the nucleolar organiser on chromosome 1B and the nucleolar organiser on 6B. Variation between genotypes for these regions has also been demonstrated. This variation has been exploited to determine the recombination frequency between the physically defined nucleolar organiser on 1B (designatedNor1) and other markers; two loci,Glu-B1 andGli-B1 which code for endosperm storage proteins andRf3, a locus restoring fertility to male sterility conditioned byT. timopheevi cytoplasm.Gli-B1 andRf3 were located on the short-arm satellite but recombine with the nucleolar organiser giving a gene order ofNor1 — Rf3 — Gli-B1. Glu-B1 is located on the long arm of 1B but shows relatively little recombination withNor1, which is, in physical distance, distal on the short arm. This illustrates the discrepancy between map distance and physical distance on wheat chromosomes due to the distal localisation of chiasmata. The recombination betweenNor1 andRf3 indicates that, contrary to previous suggestions, fertility restoration is not a property of the nucleolar organiser but of a separate locus.

    Notes: Summary Cultivars of T. aestivum crossed onto two lines with male sterility induced by the cytoplasm of T. timopheevi gave a high level of restoration in the F1 generation. The ratio of fertile to sterile plants segregating in the F2 generation was consistent with that expected for a single dominant restorer gene. The possible association between this gene and mildew resistance or some other desirable character derived from ‘CI 12633’, a common ancestor of the cultivars used, is discussed.

    Notes: Summary This work reports on the production and yield assessment of F1 wheat hybrids from crosses between cytoplasmic male sterile lines, with Triticum timopheevi cytoplasm, and cultivars with fertility restoring genes. In four years of trials conducted between 1974 and 1977, only three F1 hybrids out of a total of 168 yielded significantly more than the control variety ‘Maris Huntsman’, which currently occupies a substantial proportion of the area planted with winter wheat in the UK. Because of the rapid increase in yield of conventional wheat varieties, which has already led to varieties which outyielded ‘Maris Huntsman’, the yield advantage of these F1 hybrids is insufficient for them to be developed as commercial varieties. The efficient production of uncontaminated male sterile and F1 seed presents problems of isolation and a difficult biological problem in increasing the cross breeding potential of maintainer and restorer lines. These together with selection for other parental characters such as restoration, short straw and resistance to sprouting make the development of F1 hybrids more difficult and expensive than that of conventional varieties.

    Notes: Summary A series of experiments was carried out to investigate the effects of interplot competition on grain yield among hexaploid triticale cultivars of widely differing heights grown in 1.5 m wide plots. Three experiments in 1982 tested four triticale cultivars, ranging in final height from 63 to 104 cm, with four wheat standards, 62 to 82 cm in height, using a design balanced for nearest neighbours. Two further experiments in 1983 with the same design included eight triticale cultivars ranging in final height from 92 to 183 cm. In four of the five experiments, plot yields of both wheat and triticale were decreased by between one and two grammes per square metre for every centimetre by which the plot was exceeded by the mean height of its two neighbours. Plots which were taller than their neighbours showed a similar increase in yield. Such systematic biases in cultivar means are not reduced by randomisation and increased replication. Hence, in breeding trials, every effort should be made to group genotypes according to their final height so that competition effects between plots are reduced. For the final evaluation of varieties differing widely in height, where an estimate of error is required for variety comparisons and varietal differences are likely to be small, guard plots should be grown on either side of each experimental plot or harvesting should be restricted to the centre of larger plots.
