Notes: The operation of a twin screw extruder processing a powder or granular solid is reviewed. The operating variables of screw speed and barrel temperature profile interact with a number of design parameters -  screw design, die geometry, feed zone geometry and with the material properties, in determining machine performance. The factors that determine output and pressure development are specified in a sequence of block diagrams. The dynamic response of an operating machine to disturbances in the steady state conditions is explained in the light of the established relationships and interpreted in conventional control theory terms. Attention is drawn to the importance of mixing in the chambers formed by the screw channels and of the residence time distribution in determining the quality of the final product.

Notes: One of the problems to be considered in the application of the Halpin-Kardos theory to crystalline polymers is the relation of the crystal length to the only related and measurable parameter, spherulite size. The number average crystal length has been computed for various two and three dimensional models for the crystallization process assuming heterogeneous nucleation. It was found that high values of crystallinity are consistent only with lamellae that are stacked in a parallel fashion. For these systems the number average lamellar length is 0.55 of the spherulite radius. Lower crystallinity polymers have an average lamellar length 0.3 to 0.5 of the spherulite radius, the actual value being determined by the radius. For spherulites of radius 1μm or greater, the size of the primary nucleus has no noticeable influence on the average lamellar length.

Notes: The effect of time of indentation and time of recovery on the Rockwell hardness, of a series of glassy and crystalline polymers has been determined. An analytical technique, based on conventional viscoelastic approaches, has been developed. This technique permits the resolution of the hardness number into its components of permanent deformation, retarded elastic compression, and retarded elastic recovery. Subtraction of components due to retarded elastic response results in hardness numbers dependent only the time-dependent permanent deformation. Extrapolation of this data to zero time results in an absolute or time-independent value of Rockwell hardness, designated Ro.

Description: Mouse spinal neurons grown in tissue culture were used to study the membrane effects of the benzodiazepine flurazepam and the naturally occurring purine nucleoside inosine, which competes for benzodiazepine receptor sites in the central nervous system. Application of inosine elicited two types of transmitter-like membrane effects: a rapidly desensitizing excitatory response and a nondesensitizing inhibitory response. Flurazepam produced a similar excitatory response which showed cross-desensitization with the purine excitation. Flurazepam also blocked the inhibitory inosine response. The results provide electrophysiological evidence that an endogenous purine can activate two different conductances on spinal neurons and that flurazepam can activate one of the conductances and antagonize the other.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Notes: 〈/span〉MacDonald, J F -- Barker, J L -- Paul, S M -- Marangos, P J -- Skolnick, P -- New York, N.Y. -- Science. 1979 Aug 17;205(4407):715-7.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Record origin:〈/span〉 〈a href="http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/37602" target="_blank"〉PubMed〈/a〉

Notes: Identification was described by analysis of pyrolysis products, a method which is complicated by the variety of degradation products, but the decomposition products are fairly specific. The pyrolysis technique was used for a quantitative analysis of acrylate and maleate esters in polymers via a hydriodic acid hydrolysis technique. Because of the low volatility of the higher alkyl halides higher esters were saponified at elevated temperatures and the resultant alcohols were chromatographed. Then vinyl acetate was analyzed on the basis of the quantitative yield of acetic acid from polyvinyl acid pyrolysis.

Notes: Variations were made in the concentration of tin and amine catalysts used in a typical one-short polyether flexible foam system. Differences in foaming characteristics and foam stability were correlated with the relative rates of the chemical reactions which are believed to occur during the foaming process. Physical properties measured on the samples showed in many cases a dependence on the balance between the tin and amine catalysts.

Notes: The thermal conductivity of segregated distributions of poly (vinyl chloride)/nickel (PVC/Ni) and poly(vinyl chloride)/copper (PVC/Cu) was measured for volume fractions ranging from 0 to 0.15. The thermal conductivities increased from 0.15 Btu/hr ft °F for unmodified PVC to 2.79 Btu/hr ft °F for PVC/15 percent Cu. While the thermal conductivity increased smoothly with volume loading, the electrical resistivity decreased discontinuously over fifteen orders of magnitude. Using the parallel slab model as a basis, a semi-empirical model was deduced which described the thermal conductivity as a function of volume loading. With this work, a survey of the thermal, electrical, and mechanical properties of segregated PVC composites is complete.

Notes: The flow behavior of poly (butylene-terephthalate) (PBT) has been investigated using a capillary extrusion rheometer. The behavior was measured as a function of temperature, moisture content, and residence time of the molten polymer in the rheometer barrel. The temperature and moisture dependence of PBT are compared with polycarbonate. The notched Izod impact strength of injection-molded PBT is also reported as a function of moisture content and residence time at processing temperatures.

Notes: The fluid mechanics of impingement mixing was investigated experimentally, and the design procedure, including scale-up, for the MIT Liquid Injection Molding System was established. For impingement mixing to be effective, the Reynolds number based on the nozzle diameter must be greater than about 50 and the momentum ratio of the fluid components must he equal to 1 in addition to satisfying the desired mass flow rate ratio.
