Description / Table of Contents: Synthesis and Molecular Structure of a Metal Cluster with Cubane Structure, [η5-C5H5Mo(CO)3HgMo]4(4)The compound [η5-C5H5Mo(CO)3HgMo]4 has been isolated as an additional product of the reaction between [η5-C5H5Mo(CO)3]2, 2-butenyl chloride, and sodium amalgam. The X-ray structure (R = 0·050) analysis of this novel species revealed that the compound has a slightly distorted cubane structure, for the first time the cubane unit being built up by two different metal atoms (Mo and Hg).

Notes: The optimum operating temperature and pH have been determined for a catalyst prepared by the insolubilization of a hepatic microsomal mixed-function oxidase on glass beads. Temperature is a more significant variable than pH in determining potential catalyst yield (total product/unit catalyst). An operating range of about 25-28°C is optimal with respect to catalyst life at pH 7.6. Like the purified soluble oxidase, the glass bead-mounted enzyme catalyzes the NADPH- and oxygen-dependent oxidation of a variety of amines, hydrazines, and thioureylenes. The catalyst has been used in a simple slurry reactor to prepare mg quantities of N-oxide metabolites of prochlorperazine, guanethidine, and ethylmorphine.

Notes: Oxygen transfer measurements using a dynamic method and evaluated with an appropriate mathematical model have been made on a tubular loop bioreactor. Correlations of the type used in tank systems are used to describe the influence of power and aeration rate on the mass transfer coefficient. Yeast cultures grown on hydrocarbon and glucose substrates show growth characteristics similar to conventional tank results. Model considerations for large-scale tubular fermentors allow for the prediction of the steady-state oxygen profiles and maximum reactor length. Combination with two-phase flow and oxygen transfer correlations yields a design procedure for commercial scale tubular loop fermentors.

Notes: The gas-liquid chromatographic (GLC) method of measuring the activity coefficient of the solute in a binary system has been extended from infinite dilution to the finite concentration range. An equation is presented relating the retention volume of the injected solute sample to the equilibrium solute concentration present in the column. This relation permits determination of the activity coefficient of the solute. Based on the experimental results obtained from the study of the two binary systems, benzene in diethylene glycol at 50°, 70°, and 90°C. and n-hexane in 1,2,4-trichlorobenzene at 30°C., the activity coefficients of the solute measured by the GLC method were found to agree within about ±5% with those obtained by the static equilibrium method.

Notes: A model is described which accounts for partial segregation in continuous stirred-tank reactors by considering packets circulating within a completely micromixed continuous regime. The packets have a nonideal residence time and concentration distribution. Mass transport occurs between these packets and the continuous phase of uniform composition in proportion to their concentration gradients. Laplace transformed tracer responses establish the diffusion and mixing parameters. Over 90% of the system is segregated in unstirred aqueous solutions. Addition of polymer increases segregation by over 40% at a 100 rev/min stirrer speed.

Notes: The kinetics of ethylene hydrogenation to ethane are studied in a 7.0 cm diameter fluidized packed-bed reactor. The fixed packing, 1.27 cm nickel on alumina catalyst, is used in conjunction with both -48/+100 mesh alumina and -50/+170 mesh glass inert fluidized particles. Reactant mixture is passed through the reactor at velocities sufficient to fluidize the inerts. Conversions from 0 to 91% are observed over the temperature range 56° to 261°C and flow rate range 10 to 800 cm3/s.The mass transfer coefficient and reaction rate constant are simultaneously evaluated from integral conversion data. The mass transfer coefficient between the interstitially fluidized bed and the catalyst surface is correlated in dimensionless form asNsh = 0.77 NRe0.418 NSc1/3The correlation is significant at the 95% confidence level that is, r = 0.59, p′ 〉 0.Predictions of conversion using both the mass transfer coefficient correlation and a Langmuir-Rideal reaction expression are in good agreement with experimental data. The effects of contact time and catalyst diameter on conversion are also presented. Film diffusion influences become limiting at temperatures above 100°C at the velocities studied. Diffusional resistances were found to be important at Reynolds numbers below 100, at 186°C. No significant difference in reaction rate was found between fluidized alumina and glass inert particles under comparable operating conditions.

Description / Table of Contents: Complex Chemistry of Reactive Organic Compounds, XXIV. Five-Membered Cobalta Cycles from Carbene Addition to Dicarbonyl (η5-cyclopentadienyl)cobaltPhotolysis of the dialkyl diazomalonates 2a-g in the presence of dicarbonyl(η5-cyclopentadienyl)cobalt (1) in tetrahydrofuran yields the cobalta cycles 3a-g. The formation of the new compounds, established by X-ray structural determination on the case of 3c, can be explained formally as a result of a [2 + 3]-cycloaddition of the carbenes derived from the diazo precursors 2a-g to the organometallic substrate 1. The cyclic cobalt compounds 3a-g are converted by a thermal reaction with 1 through opening of the metalla cyclic structural element into the dinuclear μ-methylene cobalt compounds 4a-g.
