Notizen: Bifunctional arylcyanoacetic esters were oxidatively coupled to high molecular weight, colorless, amorphous polymers, soluble in common organic solvents. Brittle films were obtained by casting or compression molding. Thermal stability of the polymers is poor due to the weak C—C bond formed by oxidative coupling. Radical dissociation-recombination of this bond (evidenced by ESR) results in meso-dl equilibration, lowering the Tg of the polymers.

Notizen: The thermal bulk polymerization of cholesteryl acrylate was carried out in the solid phase, the mesomorphic phase, and the liquid phase to study the effect of monomer ordering on polymerization rate and polymer properties. The rate increased with decreasing ordering (or enhanced mobility) of the monomer. Formation of inhibitive by-products during the polymerization limited conversions to 35%. The sedimentation constant S0 = 6.2 S was the same for the polymers obtained in the three phases. The weight-average molecular weight (M̄w) was 480,000 as determined by ultracentrifugation. Poly-(cholesteryl acrylate) formed in bulk is randomly coiled when dissolved in tetrahydrofuran. The thermal properties of the monomer are given.

Notizen: Tetra- and heptanuclear N-heterocycles, their dimers and their polymers have been prepared by condensation of o-phenylenediamine or 3,3'-diaminobenzidine with 2,3-dihydroxyquinoxaline, 2,3,2,3'-tetrahydroxy-6,6'-bisquinoxaline, or 2,3,7,8-tetrahydroxy-1,4,6,9-tetraazaanthracene in polyphosphoric acid, or with the O-phenyl derivatives of the latter three compounds in phenol. The condensation products are highly colored compounds with characteristic absorption spectra. The polymers show good thermal stability.

Notizen: The present investigation examines the multibar truss optimization problem in the context of a general class of unconstrained optimization procedures in conjunction with various types of penalty function transformations. Specifically, the problem is transformed into a series of unconstrained minimization problems using the penalty function techniques of Heaviside and SUMT. These are solved using the methods of Rosenbrock (orthogonal directions), Powell (conjugate directions) and Nelder-Mead (Simplex). This resulted in many cases in substantial improvements being recorded over previously reported data. The paper includes a comparative study of the synthesis based on these procedures.

Notizen: A method is presented to calculate the eigenvalues of the Helmholtz equation Δ2ø + k2ø = 0 in a two-dimensional area when ø vanishes on the boundary. The method is based on an integral equation, which can be easily solved numerically. Results obtained for circular and rectangular geometries are also given and compared to the exact values.

Notizen: A completely numerical method for steady state linear viscoelastic stress analysis is presented by means of the finite element approach. Numerical representations of the measured viscoelastic constitutive relations are used. This method is developed to obtain steady state solutions to mixed boundary value problems in which the character of the boundary conditions at a point changes with time. Such problems cannot be handled by direct application of the correspondence theorem. A numerical example of viscoelastic sheet rolling is presented along with an experimental verification of the solution by photo-viscoelastic observations.

Notizen: The patch test is shown to be contained in the variational formulations of the finite element methods at the assembling level, all of which require the vanishing of the virtual work of interface connection loads. By a systematic introduction of stress generating functions, attention is drawn to the fact that any given finite element model can be assembled in two different ways: either by identification of a set of boundary displacements (leading to the direct stiffness method), or by identification of a set of local stress function values (leading to the dual direct flexibility method). Looking at any conjugate couple (generalized displacement-generalized surface traction) at an interface, one is strongly transmitted, the other weakly. Discretization of the zero virtual work condition at an interface of plate bending models, by means of Legendre polynomial expansions, allows a systematic construction of so-called ‘non-conforming’ elements that pass the patch test. They are in fact identified with weakly conforming, but strongly diffusive, hybrids, and the lowest degree element (quadratic) is in fact the Morley constant-moment element. Examples are given for higher degree displacement fields. The case of plate stretching elements can be handled by duality, the difficulties being here associated with the requirements for diffusivity. Non-diffusive elements that pass the zero interface virtual work test can be constructed systematically and are identifiable with weakly diffusive, but strongly conforming, hybrids of the type first proposed by T. H. H. Pian.
