    Notes: Abstract The elastic scattering of12C+12C and16O+16O has been studied in the framework of an incoming wave boundary condition model. Different logarithmic derivatives for the incoming waves have been tested and their effects investigated with the help of Fourier analyses. It is shown that a logarithmic derivative obtained from a JWKB approximation leads to strong absorption of the low partial waves while a logarithmic derivative constant for all partial waves causes reflections. These reflections are necessary to describe the high energy elastic scattering of12C+12C. The fits thus obtained with shallow real potentials are comparable to those obtained with deep folding potentials. It is shown that not the lowest partial waves, but those within a window just below the grazing angular momentum are most important for the higher energy12C+12C angular distributions.

    Notes: Abstract The effective coupling potentials derived from Feshbach's projection formalism can be significantly simplified with an adiabatic approximation in the propagator. For the diagonal and non-diagonal correction terms we derive perturbation series that lead to prominent shifts in both excitation energies and transition probabilities. We give a comparison between the conventional DWBA treatment and our modified analysis for16O+16O scattering.

    Notes: Abstract The contributions of some of the strongly coupled collective excitations in12C+12C to the heavy ion optical potential have been explicitly obtained by calculating the exact Green's function for this problem. The resulting nonlocal heavy ion potential and the trivially equivalent local potential are calculated and theirJ- andE-dependence are discussed. It is shown that the strong direct excitations contribute significantly to the absorptive part of the heavy ion potential in the surface region.

    Notes: In this study, live cells of Brevibacterium flavum were immobilized for the production of glutamic acid. The reason for such a choice was that glutamic acid fermentation is an extensively studied fermentation and one which requires the viability of entire cellular faculties for the acid production. Brevibacterium flavum was chosen because it is an industrially used bacterium, and is very potent via a vis glutamic acid production. Studies were performed to find aeration and agitation conditions for optimal growth and glutamic acid productivity. Experiments were also done to find the optimum harvesting time. The cell activity peaks during the run of fermentation, and the time at which the peak occurs, was found. Conventional methods for immobilizing the cells on collagen were found to be lacking. The pH and drying were the two main reasons for loss of viability of the cells; the latter being more important. A modified immobilization procedure has been devised, which can immobilize live cells at any given pH and ionic strength, in contrast to the conventional method which requires the pH to be above 11 or below 3. This new method involves dialysis of collagen in suitable dialysis bags against water at pH7 (or buffer at any desired pH). The dialysed collagen blended at 20,000 rpm, resulted in a very smooth dispersion, unnoticeably different from collagen dispersion prepared at pH 11. The dispersed collagen was then cast and dried at an elevated temperature, and high air flow rate over the cast membrane, decreasing the time of drying from 6-8 hr ( in the conventional method) to 1.5-2 hr. The membrane has been tested for glutamic acid producing capabilities in a column reactor with the membrane spirally wound. The reactor has been operated under continuous conditions for 5-10 days with stable activities.

    Notes: Summary Neuropile glial (NG) cells in the central nervous system of the medicinal leech, Hirudo medicinalis L., were studied by histological and intracellular electrophysiological methods. Potential profiles of single leech ganglia were mapped by advancing an electrolyte-filled microelectrode into the ganglion as far as the NG cell. A small negative potential usually appeared during or immediately after penetration of the ganglion sheath. Most of the ganglia in the chain (ganglia 1–4 and 7–21) have Retzius-cell-bodies of normal size; in these, the potential associated with the ganglion sheath was followed by a jump to a more negative potential. Superimposed action potentials were associated with entry of the electrode into a Retzius cell. When the electrode tip passed out of the cell into the center of the ganglion, another potential change was observed, namely that to the membrane potential of the anterior NG cell. This membrane potential averaged -60.2 mV and ranged from -50 to -73 mV. In ganglia 5 and 6 the Retzius-cell-bodies are particularly small, and no changes of potential associated with these cells were observed; the first potential to appear after the electrode passed through the sheath of the ganglion was the membrane potential of the NG cell. Potential profiles like those of ganglia 5 and 6 are recorded in the posterior parts of all ganglia. Potential profiles of single leech ganglia were also recorded with microelectrodes filled with the fluorescent dye Procion Yellow M4-RAN. When the presumed membrane potential of an NG cell appeared, the dye was injected into the ganglion. Subsequent histological examination with the fluorescence microscope revealed that all of the dye was contained in NG cells.
