Notes: Abstract Viscoelastic properties play an important role in posture and movement. Such properties arise from muscle mechanics and from stretch-reflex actions. We describe experiments designed to characterize both linear and nonlinear elastic and viscous properties of the wrist motor servo in human subjects. First, we describe a trial comparison method for the identification of reflex responses that are unmodified by triggered reaction-time movements. Elastic properties were studied by applying step changes in load force that stretched or released the wrist flexor and extensor muscles. The properties were basically spring-like, but there was a short-range enhancement of stiffness that gave rise to a prominent hysteresis. Viscous properties were studied by applying ramp stretches at different velocities. Both EMG and force responses showed a weak fractional-power dependence on velocity similar to that described recently for muscle spindle receptors. Consideration is given to the possible advantages of this type of nonlinear feedback in the damping of postural responses and movements.

Notes: A new technique has been employed for producing Model 11 Biomer bladders with integrally textured blood-contacting surfaces. For the past year, we have been routinely fabricating integrally textured polymeric surfaces from negative-replica silicone molds, which are a high-fidelity facsimile of conventionally flocked bladders. The objectives of this investigation are threefold: (1) To develop a blood-contacting surface that promotes the formation of a stable pseudoneointimal lining; (2) to investigate means of accelerating replacement of initial fibrin coagulum by a collagenous lining; and (3) to characterize the resultant pseudoneointimal lining biochemically, histologically, and ultrastructurally. Systematic in vivo studies were undertaken to evaluate the new surface in terms of its ability to form a thin, stable, biologic lining. Control experiments were carried out to compare results with previous experience utilizing polyester fibril flocked surfaces. Additional studies were conducted to define the effects of cell seeding of integrally textured surfaces. A total of 16 experiments have been conducted to date; eight bladders were seeded with allogeneic fetal cells prior to implantation and eight bladders were unseeded, to serve as controls. In vivo trials of seeded surfaces have resulted in the formation of strong, cellular, and highly collagenous linings, with collagen contents varying between 31% and 65%. These linings contain viable cells and thus exhibit high cellular activity, as evidenced by postexplant cell culture techniques. This indicates that a living, viable pseudoneointima has been generated. On the other hand, control (nonseeded) linings do not produce significant amounts of collagen in their linings.

Notes: Abstract A 100-kW three-phase ac plasma furnace with sheathed copper electrodes (sheathing gas: air) is presented. It is used for spheroidizing “chamotte” (refractory-fired clay) particles having a smooth, pore-free surface. A simple, one-dimensional numerical model for the heat transfer to the particles explains the maximum processing rate and the detrimental influence of an inhomogeneous particle size distribution.

Notes: A new, improved infinite element based on mapping is proposed for modelling unbounded domain problems. Mapping has previously been used in such problems, not only for the entire domain, but also for the infinite element itself. The novelty of the present approach is the simplicity of the mapping, and the retention of standard integration abscissae and weights. The implementation of these elements is very straightforward, and they are ideally suited for the analysis of infinite domain static problems in two and three dimensions.

Notes: This paper presents and analyses methods for design sensitivity analysis of static response for structural systems when general boundary conditions are used during the analysis phase. The design sensitivity analysis methods where the boundary conditions are used to reduce the equilibrium equation have been presented earlier. In such procedures, the reduced stiffness matrix is non-singular. This fact is used to show differentiability of the displacement vector. When reduction procedures are not used, the global structural stiffness matrix may be singular. In such a case, differentiability of the displacement vector may be questionable. However, it is shown that the displacement vector is still differentiable. Several forms of the structural design sensitivity equations are presented. Although these equations are derived with Lagrange multiplier treatment of general boundary conditions, it is shown that they are applicable with any treatment of general boundary conditions. For example, they can also be used with co-ordinate reduction schemes. Therefore, design sensitivity analysis can be carried out with any existing finite element analysis computer code. Moreover, the procedures presented can be used to calculate sensitivity of a force of constraint can that is desired. The formulations are kept quite general such that design dependent boundary conditions can be routinely treated. An example is used to illustrate the procedures.

Notes: Numerical solutions for two-dimensional or axisymmetric viscous fluid flow problems are usually based on the stream function/vorticity formulation. Frequently, however, the pressure distribution is of prime interest. Difficulties have been reported in the literature with the use of obvious pressure marching schemes. Consequently, several investigators have preferred to use an iterative method which involves solving a Poisson equation with Neumann boundary conditions. In this paper, the fundamental cause of failure of the marching schemes is investigated. The authors introduce the concept of compatible pressure and vorticity schemes and show that lack of compatibility has been the principal reason for the poor results obtained using marching schemes. Compatible pressure marching methods are developed and shown to give good results. Comparisons are made between the Poisson equation method and the compatible marching method. To make the comparisons meaningful, special test cases with analytical solutions have been used.
