Notes: This review focuses on a new type of para-catenated aromatic polymer being used in the preparation of high-performance films and fibers of exceptional strength, thermal stability, and environmental resistance, including inertness to essentially all common solvents. Polymers of this type include cis and transpoly(p-phenylene benzobisoxazole) (PBO), and the cis and trans forms of the corresponding poly(p-phenylene benzobis-thiazole)(PBT). The purpose of this paper is to summarize the authors' theoretical work on the structures, conformational energies, intermolecular interactions, and electronic properties of PBO and PBT chains, including the protonated forms known to exist in strong acids. The emphasis is on how such studies provide a molecular understanding of the unusual properties and processing characteristics of this new class of materials.

Notes: This paper describes the development of two easily constructed, inexpensive interfaces for combined liquid chromatography mass spectrometry. The first interface directly introduces a small percentage of liquid chromatographic eluent into the ion source of the mass spectrometer, whilst the second employs vacuum nebulization to vaporize sample and solvent. Both interfaces have been designed as removable probes. The construction and operation of the interfaces are discussed in detail and a comparison of their performance is made. Examples of the application of liquid chromatography mass spectrometry to the determination of low levels of specific components in complex matrices are given.

Notes: The measurement of plasma free fatty acid turnover and oxidation by means of the isotopic dilution technique using a radiolabeled free fatty acid has proven useful for the in vivo study of fat metabolism in animals. However, because of the ethical considerations regarding the administration of radioisotopes to humans, there is a lack of adequate information regarding the in vivo regulation of free fatty turnover and oxidation in humans, particularly children. Consequently, we have developed a technique using the stable, nonradioactive [1-13C]palmitic acid molecule as free fatty acid tracer to measure plasma free fatty acid metabolism in vivo. We have analysed the isotopic enrichment of plasma palmitate by selected ion monitoring on a gas chromatograph mass spectrometer and we have used an isotope ratio mass spectrometer to determine the much lower isotopic enrichment of the expired CO2. We have found this technique to be safe to administer, to have a high degree of analytical reproducibility, and to yield values in dogs comparable with those obtained using [1-14C]palmitic acid as the tracer.

Notes: Network and linear epoxy resins principally based on the diglycidyl ether of bisphenol-A and its oligomers have been prepared and studied. Both diamine and anhydride crosslinking agents were utilized. In addition, some rubber modified epoxies and a carbon fiber reinforced composite was investigated. All of these materials display time-dependent changes in many of their properties when they are stored (following quenching) at temperatures below their glass transition temperature (sub-Tg annealing). For example, the degree of stress relaxation for a given time period is observed to decrease in a linear fashion with the logarithm of time during sub-Tg annealing. Young's modulus and yield stress were also found to increase ire physical aging. Solvent sorption experiments initiated after different sub-Tg annealing times have demonstrated that the rate of solvent uptake can be indirectly related to the free volume of the epoxy resins. The effect of water on the physical aging of these epoxy resins was not found to be a significant variable. Residual thermal stresses were also found to have little effect on the physical aging process, although this variable was not studied in detail. Finally, the physical aging process also affected the sub-Tg properties of uniaxial carbon fiber reinforced epoxy material and the effects were as expected. The importance of the recovery or physical aging phenomenon, which affects the durability of epoxy glasses, is considered in view of the widespread applications for these resins as structural materials.

Notes: The synthesis and complete assignment of the 1H NMR spectra of 5-(o-pivaloylaminophenyl)-10,15,20-triphenylporphyrin (PIVTPP) and its two chiral dihydro adducts 3,4-dihydro-(PIVPTPC-I)- and 7,8-dihydr- (PIVPTPC-II)-porphyrins are reported. The use of the zinc complexes of the chlorins as chiral shift reagents with optically active bases is discussed. Comparison of the observed shift differences between the chlorins and the parent porphyrin with those calculated by a ring current model shows that a decrease in the ring current occurs on chlorin formation, and also specific effects occur at the reduced pyrrole ring, presumably reflecting different steric constraints.

Notes: The proton NMR spectra of tetraphenylporphyrin, octaethylporphyrin and the analogous chlorins (7,8-dihydroporphyrins) are presented, and the chemical shift changes on chlorin formation are interpreted using a ring current model. In these compounds a general 10% reduction in the ring current occurs upon chlorin formation. Similar comparison of the chemical shifts of the corresponding dications and also of the protonated form of 2-vinylphylloerythrin methyl ester with the corresponding chlorin, methyl pyropheophorbide-a, shows that chlorin formation now has a much larger effect on the ring current, this reflecting the increased steric effects within the macrocycle which occur upon protonation. Variable temperature studies on the porphyrins and chlorins examined show clearly the effect of NH exchange processes and, in particular, novel intermolecular exchange processes with trifluoroacetic acid in the protonated species are recorded.

Notes: A highly sensitive and specific quantitative assay for the determination of albuterol in human plasma, based on selected ion monitoring gas chromatography chemical ionization mass spectrometry, has been developed. The [MH]+ ions from the tri-TMS derivatives of albuterol (m/z 456) and the internal standard (2H3)albuterol (m/z 459), were assayed simultaneously by selected ion monitoring. The lower limit of quantitation is 0.25 ng ml-1 and the average assay precision (CV) for albuterol concentrations ranging from 0.25 ng ml-1 to 25 ng ml-1 is approximately 4%. This method is currently being employed for the routine quantitation of albuterol in plasma following the administration of doses therapeutically effective to man.
