    Notes: Summary Several laboratories, including our own, have investigated the physiology of bone blood flow by perfusion of the tibia via the nutrient artery. Any damage caused to the nerve supply by cannulation of the artery might affect the results. The possible effect of such damage was investigated by measuring blood flow to the dog tibia using a microsphere technique, before and after sympathectomy. No effect was found and the tibial nutrient artery is therefore a suitable vessel for perfusion when estimating nutrient exchange in bone.

    Notes: Summary The extractions of85Sr2+,18F−, sucrose-14C, EDTA-51Cr, and antipyrine-14C in bone were determined by the multiple indicator-dilution method. Fluoride and strontium extractions were 18 to 70% during a single transcapillary passage, and those of EDTA and sucrose were from 11 to 59%, whereas extraction of antipyrine was 87%. Injections of85Sr2+ and18F− made when perfusion was done alternately with blood and plasma resulted in similar fractional extractions. When flow and extraction were measured simultaneously, extraction was related inversely to flow.

    Description: Researchers define damage-tolerant structural systems as those systems which not only have adeqate intact strength to withstand initial failure but also adequate residual strength to minimize the possibility of, and hence the consequences of, further failure. The incorporation of damage tolerance cannot be done in total isolation of the function being required of the system and the costs associated with obtaining improved damage tolerance. The approach, therefore, is to formulate multiple-objective, multi-level decision support problems (DSP), the solutions of which represent a compromise between higher costs and higher damage tolerance. Mulitple-objective decision support problems are easily solved in the linear domain. These formulations, however, include both linear and nonlinear constraints and goals, which in the past, have not been considered due to the resulting complexity. Here, researchers: (1) present a complete discussion and description of decision support problems; (2) identify what further research needs to be done in order to obtain information that is required but not known for solving problems using these models; and (3) identify what needs to be done to implement this prototype method in practice.

    Description: Ocean-going vehicles and platforms are among the largest structures in the world and are subjected to relatively harsh conditions of motions and loads. Some of them, such as semi-submersible platforms, are a relatively new type of structure and hence there is no formal, well evolved and established structural design code as there is for more traditional structures. More recently, efforts have also been made to develop a design method of this type for ships and other ocean structures. One of the many advantages of a rationally based design method is versatility; it can be used for structures that have widely differing purposes, measures of merit, shapes and sizes. The purpose is to describe a rationally based design method that has been developed within the field of ocean structures, in order that persons dealing with other types of structure can judge whether and to what extent its various features may be useful for those other types. Also, even though some features may not be applicable they might stimulate some useful ideas.

    Description: Element-by-element approximate factorization procedures are proposed for solving the large finite element equation systems which arise in nonlinear structural mechanics. Architectural and data base advantages of the present algorithms over traditional direct elimination schemes are noted. Results of calculations suggest considerable potential for the methods described.

    Description: The gross thrust of an experimental airplane was determined by each method using the same flight maneuvers and generally the same data parameters. Coefficients determined from thrust stand calibrations for each of the three methods were then extrapolated to cruise flight conditions. The values of total aircraft gross thrust calculated by the three methods for cruise flight conditions agreed within + or - 3 percent. The disagreement in the values of thrust calculated by the different techniques manifested itself as a bias in the data. There was little scatter (0.5 percent) for the thrust levels examined in flight.

    Description: The ISEE observations of the pi2 magnetic pulsations occuring substorm onset in the inner magnetosphere are discussed. One of these events which was also detected as a pi2 event by the AFGL midlatitude magnetometers is considered. The event occurred when the foot of the ISEE field line was over North America. The ground and satellite signals are remarkably similar: they start and stop at the same time, have the same period and can be correlated cycle by cycle. The waves are detected in the electric field data from ISEE 1 and in the magnetic field data from both ISEE 1 and ISEE 2. Calculation of the Poynting vector at ISEE 1 shows that the energy flowed mainly westward, but that there was also a component towards the nearer (southern) ionospheric foot of the field line. The phases between the various field components measured by ISEE 1 and 2 indicate that this is a standing hydromagnetic oscillation.

    Description: The present investigation is concerned with some basic results for a predictor-multicorrector algorithm applied to the one-dimensional wave equation, giving particular attention to so-called 2-pass explicit schemes in which both lumped and coupled mass matrices are employed. In an assessment of the accuracy and stability properties of the algorithms, use is made of the one-dimensional, second-order wave equation. The maximum stable time step of the lumped right-hand-side mass, 2-pass explicit algorithm is twice that of the 1-pass explicit algorithm. Improved accuracy is obtained by employing higher-order, or consistent, right-hand-side, mass.

    Description: A weak formulation in structural analysis that provides well conditioned matrices suitable for iterative solutions is presented. A mixed formulation ensures the proper representation of the problem and the constitutive relations are added in a penalized form. The problem is solved by a double conjugate gradient algorithm combined with an element by element approximate factorization procedure. The double conjugate gradient strategy resembles Uzawa's variable-length type algorithms the main difference is the presence of quadratic terms in the mixed variables. In the case of shear deformable beams these terms ensure that the proper finite thickness solution is obtained.

    Description: An examination is conducted of the cumulative number versus diameter relation for an X-ray selected sample of supernova remnants in the Large Magellanic Cloud in an attempt to understand the evolutionary state of these objects. Previous studies have suggested that the observed linear N(D) relation requires the remnants in the cloud to be freely expanding. Detailed calculations have been carried out to determine the effect of a luminosity threshold on the observed distribution and it is shown that the observations can be fitted by remnants which are in the adiabatic or later stages of evolution. The implications of the results for the supernova creation rate in the LMC are discussed.
