Beschreibung: The paper presents analytical and computer studies of the CW mode-locked and intracavity frequency-doubled Nd:YAG laser which provide new insight into the operation, including the detuning behavior, of this type of laser. Computer solutions show that the steady-state pulse shape for this laser is much closer to a truncated cosine than to a Gaussian; there is little spectral broadening for on-resonance operation; and the chirp is negligible. This leads to a simplified analytical model carried out entirely in the time domain, with atomic linewidth effects ignored. Simple analytical results for on-resonance pulse shape, pulse width, signal intensity, and harmonic conversion efficiency in terms of basic laser parameters are derived from this model. A simplified physical description of the detuning behavior is also developed. Agreement is found with experimental studies showing that the pulsewidth decreases as the modulation frequency is detuned off resonance; the harmonic power output initially increases and then decreases; and the pulse shape develops a sharp-edged asymmetry of opposite sense for opposite signs of detuning.

Beschreibung: The goal of this grant was to study lasers, laser devices, and uses of lasers for investigating physical phenomena are studied. The active projects included the development of a tunable, narrowband XUV light source and its application to the spectroscopy of core excited atomic states, and the development of a technique for picosecond time resolution spectroscopy of fast photophysical processes.

Beschreibung: The most important recent advance with respect to mode locking has been the development of 'colliding-pulse' mode locking. An important extension to this method is reported. According to this extension, the colliding pulse function is obtained by making use of an 'antiresonant ring' laser cavity. The new concept has been applied to a flash-pumped passively mode-locked Nd:YAG laser in a number of experiments. Attention is given to mode locking of a self-pumped phase conjugate laser, picosecond photoacoustic experiments, and picosecond pulses on semiconductor surfaces.

Beschreibung: The generation of tunable, infrared, and ultraviolet light, and the control of this light by mode-locking and modulation techniques are discussed. Particular emphasis is given to energy storage and extraction using atomic levels, the development of a tunable narrowband vacuum ultraviolet light source, and to the generation and applications of ultrashort optical pulses.

Notizen: Abstract A numerical calculation procedure and various large-signal numerical solutions are presented for degenerate four-wave mixing in optical Kerr media, and for phase conjugate resonators using degenerate four-wave mixing. The solutions presented take full account of nonlinear refractive index changes, pump depletion, signal saturation, distributed losses, and possible external mirrors with laser gain. We find that including the nonlinear index change generally causes little change in the reflectivity or power output of degenerate four-wave mixing devices, at least with symmetric pumping. The optimum power output from a phase conjugate resonator with and without a laser gain medium is calculated. The results provide some theoretical guidance for designing phase conjugate resonators.
