Notes: Summary The sequence alignment algorithms of Needleman and Wunsch (1970) and Sellers (1974) are compared. Although the former maximizes similarity and the latter minimizes differences, the two procedures are proven to be equivalent. The equivalence relations necessary for each procedure to give the same result are: 1, the weight assigned to gaps in the Sellers algorithm exceed that in the Needleman-Wunsch algorithm by exactly half the length of the gap times the maximum match value; and 2, for any pair of aligned elements, the degree of similarity assigned by the Needleman-Wunsch algorithm plus the degree of dissimilarity assigned by the Sellers algorithm equal a constant. The utility of the algorithms is independent of the nature of the elements in the sequence and could include anything from geological sequences to the amino acid sequences of proteins. Examples are provided using known nucleotide sequences, one of which shows two sequences to be analogous rather than homologous.

Notes: Summary Spores of V-A mycorrhizal endophytes were extracted and counted from three different soils under three different rotations; continuous wheat, annual pasture and an alternating crop: pasture rotation. High V-A spore abundance in the autumn fell at the onset of plant growth. Spore abundance remained low under wheat but recovered under pasture regimes in the spring, coincidently with host maturation in all except one of the experiments sampled. Weak positive correlations were found between V-A spore abundance and components of pasture biomass while wheat biomass was negatively correlated with V-A spore numbers.

Notes: Measurements of the Hall coefficient R H have been made as a function of temperature between 4 and 100 K for single-crystal and polycrystal α-U and α-phase U-Mo alloys containing 0.6, 3, and 7 at % Mo. A strong temperature dependence for R H, leading to a change in its sign for the single-crystal sample, is found for the uranium below 45 K. Alloying with Mo reduces the temperature dependence of R H and that for the 7 at % Mo alloy is temperature independent. The anomalous transport behavior for the uranium is linked with the anomalies which have been observed in many of the physical properties of uranium around 45 K, and the possibility that these are due to a change in Fermi surface topology resulting from a periodic lattice distortion associated with charge density wave formation is discussed.
