Notes: Summary Magnetic resonance techniques yield important information on different coordination behaviour of Mn(II) in the presence of biomacromolecules. A preliminary study on model systems is necessary to have a deeper insight on dynamics and structural aspects. The EPR technique is not able to identify a binding interaction between Trp and manganous ion when the metal is bonded to the Imidazole. Proton shift NMR studies on the Mn(II)-5′ATP-Imid complex evidenziate a ternary system formation and a stacking interaction between the imidazole-ring and the nucleotide purine-moiety. An EPR and NMR combined analysis on the Mn(II)-5′ATP-Trp system points out a stacking interaction and the simultaneous presence of a covalent binding between the metal ion and the biomolecules. The role of the metal ion to favour this coordination is suggested.

Notes: Abstract The evaluation of power decay along the fibre by means of the backscattering technique may be altered by the presence of unknown irregularities. In the present paper the effects of such imperfections are estimated; it is demonstrated that mainly local inhomogeneities and numerical aperture fluctuations influence backscattered power. Finally an efficient and simple method for the separation of the power decay contribution from the irregularity contribution is proposed.

Notes: Abstract The problem of scattering in optical fibres is approached by means of a ray theory and by considering both the parameters that characterize each ray congruence. Starting from a general transport equation a two-variable diffusion equation is derived and its field of validity is discussed. Preliminary results (steadystate power distribution among ray congruences; steady-state attenuation and steady-state length) are given in some simple but common cases. These results permit interesting comparisons with other theories.

Notes: Abstract The effects of manufacturing variations in geometrical and optical parameters of multimode fibres on intrinsic joint losses are studied by means of a statistical approach. The analysis is performed considering different real conditions of propagation and statistical distributions of fibre parameters. The effects of a cascade of joints and of different jointing techniques are also studied. The calculations are carried out using the real tolerances recommended by the standardization organizations, through a simulation of some 500 000 joints. Except for the case of mismatch of numerical aperture (whose tolerance is relatively large) a mean joint loss of 0.07–0.2 dB and a 98th percentile of joint loss of 0.4–0.7 dB is obtained, depending on the statistical distribution of fibre parameters.

Notes: Summary The Re(CO)2(L)P2 complexes (L=N-methylsalicylideneiminate,N-phenylsalicylideneiminate, halfN,N′-ethylenebis(salicylideneiminate) or 8-hydroxyquinolinate; P=dimethyl(phenyl)phosphine or triphenylphosphine) were synthesized from the ReCl(CO)3P2 complexes and characterized by elemental analysis, i.r. and1H n.m.r. spectroscopy.

Notes: Abstract A comparison between model atmosphere grids with and without metal blanketing has been performed in the low-temperature range (T eff=6000 K to 10000 K) and for different metal contents (logA=0, −1, −2;A=scaled solar abundance). ForA≤10−1 andT eff≥7000 K, the Johnson colour indicesU-B andB-V, together with the Strömgrenu-b, b-y and the bolometric correction (BC) are little affected by metal blanketing (Δ mag〈0 . m 04). On the other hand, the trend of the physical quantities and them 1 andc 1 colour indices reflect the inadequateness of the models even withA=10−2 andT eff=9500 K, where hydrogen line blanketing is expected to dominate. This fact discourages once and for all the use of metal unblanketed atmospheres other than for comparison of colour indices or the calculation of bolometric corrections for Population II A-F spectral types.

Notes: Abstract Photometric data between 0.4 and 20 μ are discussed for K stars. Evidence of IR excess in the 11 μ region has been found for five stars in a sample of fourteen. The hypothesis of the presence of circumstellar matter in K stars seems to be confirmed.

Notes: Abstract A comparison between theGeneral Catalogue of Cool Carbon Stars (CCS) and theAFGL Catalogue has been performed. Eighty-five stars have been found in common between the two lists. Eighty-four stars which were present in Baumert's comparison between CCS and the 2 μ Sky Survey have no counterpart in the AFGL. Four new tentative identifications are given. The analysis of the two colours diagrams K-[4.2 μ] vs. I-K and I-[4.2 μ] vs. [4.2 μ]-[11 μ] led to the conclusion that all the infrared emission from the sources seems to come from a single circumstellar shell.
