Notes: The kinetics of the γ-ray-initiated polymerization of acrylonitrile in bulk are reexamined in broad ranges of temperatures and radiation dose rates. The discussion of the results coupled with an analysis of earlier data indicate that the polymerization of acrylonitrile proceeds by different mechanisms depending on the reaction temperature. Above 60°C the precipitated growing chains recombine readily; therefore, the autoaccelerated conversion curves cannot be accounted for by an “occlusion effect.” It is suggested that autoacceleration is caused by a fast propagation taking place in oriented monomer aggregates which result from dipole-dipole association of the monomer with the polymer chains formed in the early stages of the reaction (“matrix effect”). Below 10°C the precipitated growing chains are buried in the dead polymer and monomer diffusion toward the occluded chain ends is very limited (“occlusion effect”). Between 10 and 60°C the system gradually changes from one dominated by “occlusion” to one where the “matrix effect” determines the kinetic behavior. The conclusion based on kinetic data is in agreement with results obtained from studies of the postpolymerization in these various systems.

Notes: The composition and gross structural features of plasma polymer films prepared by inductively coupled RF plasmas excited in pentafluorobenzene were investigated by ESCA as a function of the operating parameters. The rate of film deposition is dependent on the W/FM parameter and on site of deposition. The polymer formed in the glow region shows only small variations in structure as a function of power and pressure. Polymer films deposited in the regions away from the site of primary excitation typically have a higher fluorine content than those formed in the coil region; the stoichiometry for the latter is comparable to that of the starting material.

Notes: A systematic investigation has been made of the composition, gross structural features, and rates of deposition of plasma polymer films produced from the excitation of inductively coupled RF plasmas in the isomeric tetrafluorobenzenes. ESCA data reveal that the dominant reaction involves rearrangement such that under a wide variety of experimental conditions the composition of the crosslinked products remains essentially the same as that of the starting material. Small differences in rates of deposition are observed for the different isomers, and theoretical SCF MO studies at the MNDO level provides a basis for discussion of the experimental data.

Notes: Emulsion polymerization of vinyl benzoate and its copolymerization with vinyl acetate or styrene are described. The effect of the potassium persulfate initiator, and the sodium lauryl sulfate emulsifier concentration on the rate of vinyl benzote homopolymerization and the molecular weight of the polymers was determined. In copolymerization with vinyl benzoate, both comonomers, vinyl acetate and styrene, decrease the initial polymerization rate. With increasing amounts of styrene in the comonomer mixture the polymerization rate increases but with vinyl acetate an opposite effect is observed. Reactivity ratios of copolymerizations were determined. For the vinyl benzoate [M1]-styrene [M2] comonomer system a r1 = 0.03 and a r2 = 29.58 and for vinyl benzoate [M1]-vinyl acetate [M2], a r1 = 1.93 and a r2 = 0.20 was obtained. From the vinyl benzoate-styrene reactivity ratios the Qe parameters were calculated.

Notes: Although polymerization of 2,5-dibromothiophene via coupling of the Grignard reagent with organonickel salts was reported in two earlier communications, a detailed examination of reaction variables was not done. This report provides results from variation in the following: time, amount of magnesium, amount of iodine, dilution, and variation in the halide of the monomer. The highest yield was obtained for reactions with 1:1 molar ratio of monomer to magnesium in more concentrated solutions of tetrahydrofuran for a reaction time of 4 h. For variation in the halogen of the monomer the following yield sequence was obtained: I 〉 Br 〉 Cl. The results are compared with the corresponding benzenoid system investigated by Yamamoto. In addition, polymerization studies were carried out with other brominated thiophene monomers. Use of an organic promoter (cis-1,4-dichloro-2-butene) in place of a nickel salt proved successful in the generation of poly(2,5-thienylene).

Notes: The composition and gross structural features of plasma polymers formed in the glow regions of an inductively coupled RF plasma with perfluorobenzene and perfluorobenzene/hydrogen mixtures were investigated by ESCA as a function of the operating parameters. The carbon-to-fluorine stoichiometries of the perfluorobenzene polymers are similar and close to those of the starting material but not of the polymers derived from perfluorobenzene/hydrogen mixtures. The rate of film deposition is dependent on the W/FM parameter. Angular and photon energy-dependent studies confirm the vertical homogeneity of the plasma polymer films investigated.

Notes: The kinetics of formation of epoxide resins based on epichlorohydrin and bisphenol-A via synthesis with one- or two-step addition of alkali are considered. The kinetics of the reaction were studied by taking into account the consumption of the alkali added and the change of molecular mass and epoxide value of epoxide oligomers. The results obtained are satisfactorily explained within the framework of a model containing the following postulates: all the alkali is bound as phenolate ions; all phenolic groups are of equal reactivity; the reactivity of epichlorohydrin is higher than that of glycidyl ethers; the stage of dehydrochlorination of chlorohydrin ethers in the synthesis with one-step addition of alkali is rapid and does not limit the process; the first stage of the two-step synthesis is the formation of chlorohydrin ethers and the second stage their consumption. The factors leading to differences between the experimentally obtained parameters of the resulting epoxide resins (molecular weight, epoxide value) and their calculated values are discussed. The synthesis of epoxide resins with two-step alkali addition is shown to possess certain advantages over the one-step process.

Notes: The swelling of PVF and PVDF films in various solvents was investigated. It was found that in the swollen state both polymers show little tendency to retain the solvent that leaks out under a mild pressure and evaporates quickly when the specimen is exposed to air. The equilibrium swelling ratios were measured in numerous solvents. From the results it is concluded that the solubility parameters are δPVDF = 12.0-12.3, δPVF = 12.0-12.1. The unusual swelling behavior is explained by strong polymer-polymer interactions via dipoles which tend to replace polymer-solvent interactions once the sample is withdrawn from the solvent.

Notes: MoCl5, WCl6, and OMoCl4 were found to be effective initiators for the polymerization of acetylene and its monosubstituted derivatives RC=CH. The polymerization proceeded in homogeneous and heterogeneous media and was carried out in nonpolar (chloroalkanes, aromatic hydrocarbons) and polar (THF, acetone, dioxane, carboxylic acids) solvents to give a high yield of polymers.
