    Notes: Abstract The interaction between two high-grade polished fused silica plates separated by a thin layer of aqueous LiCl, NaCl and KCl solution, respectively, was determined by means of a selfdeveloped method. Concerning the repulsion created by overlap of the electrical double layers excellent agreement with the DLVO theory down to separation of about 5 nm were found. For still smaller separations a relatively strong additional repulsion arises which according to experimental evidence might be assigned to the overlap of hydration layers emanating chiefly from the alkali metal halide ions adsorbed onto the silica surfaces. Our results agree well with those obtained by Israelachvili et al. and Pashley, who used mica sheets.

    Notes: Abstract During collisions of heavy nuclei with a combined chargeZ≳160 the electronic 1s-state is deeply bound due to the strong Coulomb field, forZ≧173 it even enters as a resonance the lower continuum of the Dirac-Hamiltonian. In pure Rutherford scattering no qualitative indication for the filling of a dynamically createdK-hole by the spontaneous positron creation process is predicted, but the study of heavy-ion collisions with nuclear time delay due to the attractive nuclear force promises clear signatures for the decay of the vacuum. Emphasis is laid also on the quantitative influence of the electron-electron interaction and ofE0-transitions in the giant nuclear system on positron emission, the latter treated in a classical approximation. We compare our results with recent experimental data of two different groups at GSI, Darmstadt.

    Notes: Abstract The xenogeneic- and allogeneic immunological specificity of the hydrocoral Millepora dichotoma has been investigated. Xenogeneic histoicompatibility reactions have been observed between this hydrocoral and a series of species belonging to the Demospongiae and to the Anthozoa (both Hexacorallia and Octocorallia). The xenogeneic histoincompatibility reactions proceed in the following sequence: (a) Species-unspecific sensitization; (b) necrosis formation, which is very likely due to an autolytic process; (c) callus formation, due to an hyperplastic growth of stolons; and (d) formation of a contact barrier in form of a barrier layer or a restored stolonial layer. Allogeneic histoincompatibility reactions are restricted to those regions of the coral which are interspersed with polyps; allogenic fusion is observed between branches, with a high density of polyps and the “foot”-region, which is characterized by a low polyp density.

    Notes: Abstract The dissociation of the gorgonian Eunicella cavolinii (Koch) into single cells was successfully accomplished. These cells readily formed aggregates of a size of 2 100 μm during incubation in roller tubes; no aggregate formation was observed in non-rotating Petri dishes. The formation of aggregates was not influenced by Ca++, urea or trypsin; it was also independent of temperature (4° to 30°C) and pH (5.5–9.0). The intercellular material of the gorgonian contains a galactose-specific lectin, as determined by double diffusion experiments and haemagglutination inhibition experiments using a series of galactoglycoconjugates. This lectin converted the aggregation-susceptible cells to aggregation-deficient cells. These findings are summarized in a novel model, in which it is assumed that the lectin masks the function of the cell surface-associated aggregation molecules.

    Notes: Summary Dissociated sponge cell system has proved to be a useful model to study the process of cell aggregation both on cellular and subcellular level. The purpose of this review is to discuss recent results obtained from experiments with the marine sponge Geodia cydonium. Dissociated cells form functional aggregates during a process which can be sub-divided into three phases: first, formation of small primary aggregates in the presence of Ca2+; second, formation of secondary aggregates in the presence of an aggregation factor and third, reconstitution of a functional system of watercontaining channels by rearrangement in the secondary aggregates. On subcellular level a series of macromolecules are known which are involved in the control of aggregation and separation of sponge cells: Aggregation factor, aggregation receptor, anti-aggregation receptor, glucuronidase, ß-glucuronosyltransferase, ß- ß-galactosidase and a lectin. These components might be linked in the following sequence: (a) Activation of the aggregation receptor by its enzymic glucuronylation; (b) Adhesive recognition of the cells, mediated by the aggregation factor and the glucuronylated aggregation receptor; (c) Inactivation of the aggregation receptor by its deglucuronylation with the membrane-associated ß-glucuronidase; (d) Cell separation due to either the loss of the recognition site (glucuronic acid) of the aggregation receptor for the aggregation factor or to an inactivation of the aggregation factor by the anti-aggregation receptor. The activity of the anti-aggregation receptor is most likely controlled by the Geodia lectin. The events leading to cell-cell recognition cause a change in the following metabolic events: Increase of oxygen uptake, decrease of cyclic AMP level, increase of cyclic GMP level and stimulation of programmed syntheses.

    Notes: Summary We reviewed here a number of publications containing data on the quantitative aspects of collagen synthesis in vitro. In one section we discussed the factors which modulate the amount of collagen synthesized in various culture systems and in another section we presented experimental evidence for regulatory mechanisms operating in collagen synthesis on the transcriptional and/or translational levels. We believe that growing knowledge of the mechanisms controlling collagen synthesis will help us to understand and deal with fibrotic processes better.

    Notes: Abstract In the strong Coulomb field of a nucleus or quasimolecule withZ≳172 a change of the QED vacuum has been predicted, signalled by the spontaneous emission of positrons if holes in theK-shell are available. The dynamical semiclassical theory of positron excitation in heavy ion scattering is presented and extended to collisions with nuclear contact. Interference patterns in the energy spectrum of the emitted positrons and, for sufficiently long reaction timeT, the emerging of a characteristic line at the position of the 1sσ-resonance is predicted. The position and width of the 1sσ-resonance is calculated in dependence on the nuclear configuration, the effect of electron screening is taken into account. Recent experimental indications [1, 2] for structures in the spectra of positrons emitted in U-U collisions at energies close to the Coulomb barrier are discussed in terms of spontaneous positron creation. The observed spectra could be explained under the assumption of long lasting nuclear reactions (T≳4·10−20 s) with a cross section in the millibarn region. Various consequences of this interpretation are discussed.

Coupled channel calculations for Xe-Pb, Pb-Pb, and U-U collisions are presented. In the heaviest system strong interference minima for both 1sσ and 2p1/2σ excitation are predicted at T≲3.10−21 sec.
