    Notes: In this paper we present orsder three, four and five backward product integration methods for the generalized Abel equation We illustrate their use by silving the small angle deflection problem, and show computationally that these methods are convergent for all ∊ ∊(0,1).     Notes: Adducts of cis-1,4-polybutadiene with both benzene- and toluenesulfenyl chlorides were conveniently oxidised in a second stage modification with m-chloroperbenzoic acid to yield novel sulfone thermoplastic polymers. These have higher glass transition temperatures and are more thermostable than the parent adducts.

    Notes: Thermal analysis by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) indicated that graft copolymers of poly(tetrahydrofuran) (PTHF) on a nitrile rubber containing 39 wt.-% acrylonitrile have a two-phase morphology comprising crystalline PTHF and amorphous rubber. In rubbers with an 18 wt.-% acrylonitrile content the PTHF is more compatible with the rubber and exerts a plasticising effect; crystallinity of the PTHF is not as well developed. cis-1,4-Polybutadiene and PTHF are partially miscible and in grafts on these two the melting endotherm of the latter was not detected. The relative values of the solubility parameters of PTHF and the three rubbers are consistent with this behaviour. All graft copolymers have a fairly low thermal stability and begin to decompose under N2 below 200°C. Degradation appears to be initiated at the PTHF grafts. Graft copolymers of PTHF with nitrile rubbers are less resistant to petroleum than the ungrafted rubbers.

    Notes: cis-1,4-Polybutadiene and nitrile rubbers were functionalised with chlorohydrin groups up to levels of 10 mol-% in a two-stage process. In the first stage epoxide groups were introduced by reaction of the rubber with m-chloroperbenzoic acid and in the second stage the epoxide ring was opened by reaction with hydrochloric acid to yield chlorohydrin groups. Both steps in the process are clean and virtually quantitative. Graft chains of poly(tetrahydrofuran) were introduced by coupling the hydroxyl groups with living poly(tetrahydrofuran) cations. The lengths of the graft chains were determined by the time between initiation (by the action of silver perchlorate on ethyl bromide in tetrahydrofuran solution) and the coupling step with the functionalised rubber.

    Notes: Three high molecular weight polycaprolactones (M̄w = 35,000, 18,600, and 7,130) were utilized as the sole carbon source by five of six fungi tested by the American Standards for Testing and Materials (ASTM) agar plate method. The fungi were Aspergillus flavus, A. niger, A. fumigatus, Chaetomium globosum, Pencillium funiculosum, and a Fusarium sp. Quantitative analysis of degradation was performed using gel permeation chromatography (GPC). GPC analysis demonstrated differences between the activities of organisms which appeared similar by the ASTM method, and showed that, while all molecular weight species within each polymer were hydrolyzed, in several cases low molecular weight end products were not assimilated. Depending on the organism, the dominant factor determining degradability was either polymer molecular weight or degree of crystallinity.

    Notes: The degradability of three high molecular weight polycaprolactones (M̄w = 35,000, 18,600, and 7,130) and one low molecular weight polycaprolactone diol(M̄w = 2060) by mixed and pure cultures of microorganisms was assayed. A yeast, Cryptococcus laurentii, a gram-negative rod, Acinetobacter calcoaceticus var. lwoffi, and a gram-positive coryneform rod were used in the pure culture assays. The analysis of degradation by gel permation chromatography (GPC) allowed for quantitation independent of the growth of the organisms or the addition of supplementary growth factors. GPC analysis showed that the degradation effected by pure cultures was often enhanced when alternate carbon sources were present. This was not the case for mixed cultures. Mixed cultures. Mixed cultures completely metabolized polymer breakdown products while in some cases pure cultures did not.

    Notes: A branched pore kinetic model for aqueous phase activated carbon adsorption is presented in which the carbon particle is separated into rapidly and slowly diffusing regions. The model was developed to overcome problems arising from a single rate parameter analysis and is shown to describe experimental data well. In addition to very different rates of transport in the two regions, parameters estimated by regression analysis indicated differences in the adsorptive characteristics.

    Notes: Bone remodeling due to stress-shielding has been studied using a model system consisting of metal-polymer laminated fixation plates securely fixed to canine femurs. The plate stiffness was controlled by varying the ratio of metal facing to polymer core thickness in the laminate design while secure fixation to bone was achieved by providing a porous bone interfacing surface for the ingrowth of bone from the periosteal surface. Observations of laterally and medially placed plates indicated resorption in the area of the periosteal and endosteal bone surfaces respectively, for the higher stiffness composite plates used. The results indicate that plate stiffness greater than approximately 70 GPa (axial) and 6 N m2 (flexural) will result in extensive bone remodeling in the canine femur after a six month implantation period.

    Notes: Erythrocyte populations from newborn and mature mice were characterized according to: size; ultrastructural features; water content; concentration of intraerythrocyte elements including Na, Cl, K, P, S, Mg, and Fe; and the spin-lattice (T1) and spin-spin relaxation times of water protons as measured by nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy. A significant increase in the T2 time from 142 ± 3 msec to 184 ± 3 msec occurred during erythrocyte maturation. This change in T2 time was correlated with a change from a polyribosome-rich hemoglobin-poor cell type to a polyribosome-absent hemoglobin-rich cell type. The change in T2 time could also be correlated to a significantly higher K and P concentration in the mature erythrocytes. The change in T2 time was not correlated to a change in cellular water content or to the concentration of any of the other elements measured by electron probe X-ray microanalysis. If the NMR relaxation times of water molecules truly reflect their average motional freedom, then the findings suggest that greater water ordering interaction occurs in the ribosome containing immature erythrocyte.
