Notes: A finite element model for symmetrically loaded shells of revolution is described. The nonlinear geometric effects are accounted for by incrementing loads and iterating for equilibrium. The iteration process also allows for nonlinear materials. The shell model accounts for large strains, large rotations and shear deformation. Three example problems demonstrate the ability of this model to solve linear problems. Also, three example problems demonstrate the versatility and accuracy of this model for nonlinear problems. These nonlinear example problems are an axially loaded cylinder and an internally pressurized spherical shell that have large membrane strains, and a cylinder that deforms into a spherical shape, having large rotations.

Notes: A finite element nonlinear shell model has been developed using Reissner's symmetrically loaded shell-of-revolution theory. This model is capable of modelling nonlinear strains, large rotations and nonlinear materials. This paper discusses the limitations of this model by deriving the basic equations and describing the simplifying assumptions used in the theory and the model. Possible extensions of the model are discussed also.

Notes: The nine-node quadrilateral is much more accurate than its eight-node relative if elements are non-rectangular. However, the nine-node element may display spurious low-energy modes under 2 × 2 Gauss quadrature. These modes can be controlled by using the 3 × 3 quadrature rule, but at added cost. This paper investigates two inexpensive control devices that can be used with 2 × 2 Gauss quadrature.

Notes: Finite element models provide only approximate results under most loadings. A beam modelled by constant-strain triangles and loaded by pure moment is a case in point. Yet if the iterative method advanced by Loubignac et al.1 is applied to this model, the exact stress field will be generated. The iterative method derives from a parent formulation that can be solved without iteration.2 As shown in this paper, the parent formulation contains the sum of two stiffness matrices. One is produced by the customary finite element shape functions. The other is produced by finite difference expressions for strain gradients that are not contained in the shape functions.Loubignac's method produces a stress field that is continous across interelement boundaries. Other methods that seek to impose interelement continuity are noted in the concluding section.

Notes: The siphuncle of the chambered nautilus (Nautilus macromphalus) is composed of a layer of columnar epithelial cells resting on a vascularized connective tissue base. The siphuncular epithelium taken from chambers that have not yet begun to be emptied of cameral liquid has a dense apical brush border. The great number of apical cell junctions (zonula adherens) compared to the number of nuclei suggests extensive interdigitation of these cells. The perinuclear cytoplasm of these preemptying cells is rich in rough endoplasmic reticulum. The siphuncular epithelium of both emptying and “old” siphuncle (which has already completed emptying its chamber) both show little rough endoplasmic reticulum but do contain extensive systems of mitochondria-lined infoldings of the basolateral plasma membranes. Active transport of NaCl into the extracellular space of this tubular system probably entrains the water transport involved in the chamber-emptying process. Both emptying and old siphuncular epithelium also show large basal infoldings (canaliculi) continuous with the hemocoel, which appear to be filled with hemocyanin. The apical cell junctions of emptying and old siphuncular epithelium contain septate desmosomes that may help to prevent back-flow of cameral liquid into the chambers.

Notes: Three high molecular weight polycaprolactones (M̄w = 35,000, 18,600, and 7,130) were utilized as the sole carbon source by five of six fungi tested by the American Standards for Testing and Materials (ASTM) agar plate method. The fungi were Aspergillus flavus, A. niger, A. fumigatus, Chaetomium globosum, Pencillium funiculosum, and a Fusarium sp. Quantitative analysis of degradation was performed using gel permeation chromatography (GPC). GPC analysis demonstrated differences between the activities of organisms which appeared similar by the ASTM method, and showed that, while all molecular weight species within each polymer were hydrolyzed, in several cases low molecular weight end products were not assimilated. Depending on the organism, the dominant factor determining degradability was either polymer molecular weight or degree of crystallinity.

Notes: Pressure drop data for distillation sieve trays have been obtained with experimental trays with small outlet weir heights, including zero, and for trays with small perforations which exhibit large pressure drops due to surface tension. These data have been added to literature data to form a large composite data base with extensive variations in fluid and gas properties, flow rates, and tray designs.A new pressure drop correlation has been developed which retains the use of the dry tray pressure drop, but provides new procedures for estimating liquid inventory and the resistance to vapor flow due to surface tension forces. This correlation gives a mean absolute error of 6.0% and an average error of -0.6%. These errors are significantly less than the errors between measurements and predictions from two other correlations using the same composite data base.

Notes: Isolation of a pentaene macrolide antibiotic (NSC-277813) from Streptomyces griseus (FCRC-21) fermentation broth is described. Using field desorption mass spectrometry and high resolution field desorption mass spectrometry on the intact and derivatized antibiotic and degradation products, the antibiotic was identified as fungichromin. The application of field desorption mass spectrometry in the identification of polyene antibiotics is discussed.

Notes: Three-dimensional finite element analysis (FEA) has been used to determine the implant-bone interface characteristics of bioglass dental implants. The results of the FEA were verified by comparison with the results of mechanical testing performed on animal implant specimens. The results of the study showed that the assumption of a discontinuous change of elastic properties at the bone-implant interface was a poor assumption for the bioglass implants. Interface elastic moduli of 354.0, 155.0, and 47.0 MPa for conditions of 25, 50, and 100% tissue attachment were determined for the bioglass implants.
