    Notes: The growth of two isolates of the downy mildew fungus Peronospora parasitica, one obtained from cauliflower (Brassica oleracea) and the other from oilseed rape (B. napus) was assessed in their respective hosts of origin, and also in the alternative combination. Both isolates were capable of infecting either host, but there were marked contrasts in the time course and extent of mycelial development, the amounts of associated host-cell necrosis, and eventual intensity of sporulation. Oilseed rape, which was partially resistant to the isolate from cauliflower, exhibited extensive necrosis of mesophyll cells, in conjunction with reduced mycelial development, and delayed and reduced sporulation by the pathogen. The isolate from oilseed rape was virulent on both host species. Pathogenesis in the susceptible combinations was accompanied by large increases in electrolyte leakage, and increased activity of the enzymes β-glucosidase, ribonuclease, and peroxidase. Effects on chlorophyll content were variable and activities of acid phosphatase and acid phosphodiesterase were unaffected. Electrophoretic analyses of extracts from fungal sporangia and infected seedlings indicated that the large increases in β-glucosidase were of pathogen origin, while evidence from inhibitor studies suggested that enhanced ribonuclease activity was due to a new post-infectional form of the enzyme. The significance of these findings is discussed in relation to pathogenesis and host resistance mechanisms.

    Notes: Abstract— A model for fatigue threshold has been proposed based on the dislocation subgrain cell structure that evolves at the crack tip in steels during the fatigue deformation process. The stabilized subgrain cells that develop in the material act as impenetrable barriers to dislocations in slip band pile-ups that emanate from the fatigue crack tip. The blocking of these dislocations tends to limit crack growth that occurs by crack tip emission of dislocations, thereby leading ultimately to the fatigue threshold condition. The grain size effect on threshold is deduced to be an indirect effect as it is proposed that the subgrain cell size is the controlling substructural parameter at the threshold stress intensity level. The subgrain cell size is shown to be proportional to the one-third power of the initial grain size.

    Notes: Verticillium wilt was assessed in seedling populations of five lucerne varieties: Euver, Maris Kabul, Sabilt, Verneuil and Vertus. Visual assessments of disease severity in Vertus were compared with estimates of fungal biomass obtained by a maceration-dilution plate method and glucosamine assays. Symptom severity correlated with the amounts of fungus present only at the lower disease ratings. In contrast, direct correlations were obtained between visually assessed disease severities and the chlorophyll contents of plant shoots. Wide variation in disease reaction type were found within populations of all five varieties and disease development was found to differ in two environments with differing temperatures. The significance of these variations is discussed in relation to the genetic background of the host and studies on the biochemical basis of resistance to Verticillium wilt.

    Notes: Abstract Asexual and sexual reproduction were studied in an intertidal population of Nepanthia belcheri (Perrier) at Townsville, Queensland, Australia, by regular sampling over a year (March 1976-March 1977) and by histological analysis of gonads. Fission reached a peak in early winter (April–June), when about 45% of the population showed evidence of recent fission. Propensity for fission was unrelated to longest arm length. Seven-armed seastars predominated in the population and these underwent fission in two stages to produce one 3-armed fragment and two 2-armed fragments. Fission planes were not related to numbers or positions of madreporites. Hermaphroditism was a normal sexual condition in the population. Almost all gonads contained oocytes, but some gonads functioned as ovaries (without spermatogenic tissue) while others functioned as testes. Seastars with mature ovaries were significantly larger than those with mature testes, indicating protandry, as in other hermaphroditic asteroids. However, fission complicates the pattern of gonad development by causing regression or retardation of gonads and by apparently having a masculinizing effect, so that ovaries may change to testes in fission products. There was a period of sexual reproduction in early summer (October–November). This followed the period of intense fission and regeneration, and a population change from predominately functional females to males. Consequently there was an extreme imbalance against mature females at sexual reproduction, further reducing potential fecundity. Thus, sexual reproduction was very subordinate to fission as the means of recruitment. The 450 μm diam eggs probably give rise to pelagic lecithotrophic development and, if this is the case, N. belcheri retains the advantage of complementing reliable recruitment from fission with a dispersive phase. The combination of fission and hermaphroditism is particularly advantageous for a very sparse dispersal of larvae, as a functionally dioecious population may develop from one larva settling in a new locality.

    Notes: Abstract Ophidiaster granifer Lütken is a small cryptic coral reef asteroid found in the Indo-West Pacific. Its mode of reproduction, shown by aquarium observations and gonad histology, is parthenogenetic. This is the first confirmation of natural parthenogenesis in the phylum Echinodermata, despite many studies showing artificial parthenogenesis in echinoderms. Populations of O. granifer from Micronesia, New Guinea and the Great Barrier Reef consisted only of females: no testes or spermatogenesis were found in any individual at any stage of gonad development of ca 400 individuals. Regular year-round population censuses at Guam, Micronesia, revealed a distinct 0-year class which grew to sexual maturity in two years. There was an annual reproductive cycle with apparently-synchronous spawning in early winter. The large eggs, ca 0.6 mm diameter, develop into lecithotrophic larvae. Some larvae are planktonic, while some remain attached under the rocks. The latter develop through metamorphosis in situ. Parthenogenetic reproduction leading to both stationary and dispersed larvae may be related to the low fecundity and low population densities of this small asteroid.

    Notes: Summary A comparison was made of fixed and non-fixed uredospores of the wheat stem rust fungusPuccinia graminis f. sp.tritici, using thin sectioning and freeze-etching. The latter technique yielded new information on the ultrastructure of dormant, germinating, and photo-inhibited uredospores, although the distribution of intramembranous particles (IMPs) was similar in each case. A stereological analysis of thin sectioned specimens provided quantitative data on organelle volumetric densities complementing the qualitative information. Evidence suggests that light acts by preventing the dissolution of wall material in the germ pore regions. Methylcis-ferulate, the uredospore self-inhibitor, is also believed to act at this stage in the germination process, and possible links between photo-inhibition and self-inhibition are discussed.
