Notes: Abstract Three algorithms for the solution of the eigenvalue problem for a continuously parameterized family of sparse matrices are presented; a continuousLU (orLR) algorithm, a continuousQR algorithm, and a continuous Hessenberg algorithm. Each of the three algorithms may be implemented recursively and the sparsity of the given matrices is preserved throughout the numerical process.

Notes: Abstract Applying a variational method to the generalized Wolff model, we have investigated the effect of impurity-impurity interaction on the formation of local moments in the ground state. The direct coupling between the impurities is found to be more important than the interaction between the impurities and the host conduction electrons, as far as the formation of local moments is concerned. Under certain conditions we also observe different valences on different impurities.

Notes: Abstract We construct a simple stochastic model for particle production in hadron-nucleon collisions, which agrees with experimentally observed KNO scaling. We then use this model to calculate the multiplicity distribution of negative particles produced in α-α collisions at the CERN-ISR, based on a model of multiple collisions. The agreement of the measured spectra with the theory supports this hypothesis.

Notes: Abstract On the basis of current assumptions of instanton theory we derive strictly the explicit dependence on the masses and spins of the instanton induced potential between a pair of light quarks in baryons, namelyV 12=γ+β(m * 1+α )(m * 2+α )η(1-σ 1ησ 1), wherem i * andσ i (i=1.2) are respectively the mass and Pauli spin of theith quark. On the additional basis of the MIT bag model, we obtain γ=c/R 3 and β=b/R 3〉0, and α〉0 is independent of the radiusR of the baryon. The magnitudes of the parametersb and α are also estimated. The MIT bag model is improved by taking into account this potential. Isomultiplet mass splitting formulas are derived in good agreement with experiment.

Notes: Abstract A polychromatic correlation detection technique by complex spatial filtering is presented. This technique utilizes a diffraction grating and three co-lineared (red, green, and blue) coherent sources. The technique of complex spatial filter synthesis for the polychromatic corelation detection is demonstrated. This technique offers true color correlation detection which is very suitable for color signal recognition and identification. The correlation diffraction efficiency with this technique is generally higher than that of the wavelength-multiplexed technique. Several interesting experimental demonstrations of this color signal correlation detection scheme are provided. Finally we note that this color signal detection technique is a simple and versatile processing technique which has broad range of applications of complex color signal detection, recognition and identification.

Notes: Abstract This paper presents a cost-minimizing location model to investigate the theoretical impacts and implication of factor-price uncertainty on the optimum location decisions of the firm in linear space. It will be shown that increased input price uncertainty leads the firm to move its factory towards the site of the price uncertain input.

Notes: Summary Spinning behavior of the last larval instar and ontogenetic changes during the pupal stage (the period of time from capping to emergence) inPolistes annularis are described. The average duration of this stage is 18.80±1.12 days under natural conditions in the Athens area. A table and a key which may be used to determine pupal age according to their external appearance are provided.

Notes: Abstract Previous studies have indicated that certain sequences in the micronuclear genome are absent from the somatic macronucleus of Tetrahymena (Yao and Gorovsky, 1974; Yao and Gall, 1979; Yao, submitted). The present study used in situ hybridization to follow the elimination process during the formation of the new macronucleus. Micronuclear-specific DNA cloned in recombinant plasmids was labelled with 3H and hybridized to cytological preparations of T. thermophila at various stages of conjugation. Despite a smaller size and lower DNA content, the micronucleus has more hybridization than the mature macronucleus. Hybridization initially increased in the anlage (newly developing macronucleus) to reach a maximal level right after the old macronuclei had disappeared. The hybridization in the anlage then decreased to a significant extent prior to the first cell division. The results suggest that the micronuclear-specific sequence is first replicated a few rounds before it is eliminated from the anlage, and the elimination process occurs without nuclear division.
