Notes: Abstract Decisionmakers are in the process of selecting remedial measures for controlling nonpoint pollution runoff. Conservation tillage (CT) is being looked to as one of the major recommended practices. Many different systems exist and vary in the amount of crop residue left and soil roughness produced. Therefore, varying results occur in terms of yield and potential water quality impacts. Differences vary with type of tillage system, soils, geographic region, and the farmer's management. The purpose of this review is to provide material to decisionmakers that points out the assets and liabilities of the various CT systems. Tillage effects on soil characteristics and plant growth are presented and include a discussion of soil moisture and temperature, weed and insect control, nutrient availability, and yields. Water quality aspects are addressed through a discussion of the effects CT systems have on sediment, water, pesticide, and phosphorus loss.

Notes: Summary The development of a sensitive radioimmunoassay for the determination of lisuride in plasma is described. The antiserum against lisuride-4-hemisuccinate-BSA was raised in rabbits. Using this method the plasma levels of lisuride were monitored following one intravenous (25 µg) and two oral (100 µg and 300 µg) doses of lisuride hydrogen maleate in three female and three male volunteers (intraindividual comparison). The plasma prolactin was also determined by radioimmunoassay. Following i. v. injection, the concentration of lisuride declined in three phases, with half-lives of 5 min, 25 min and 2 h. The total plasma clearance of 800±250 ml × min−1 was in the range of “plasma flow” through the liver. In agreement with the high rate of biotransformation, the bioavailability of lisuride administered orally was 10%±7% of the 100-µg dose, and 22%±7% of the 300-µg dose. The plasma prolactin was lowered to 3%–18% of its pretreatment value depending on the route of administration and the dose. The reduction appeared to be short-lived and to be directly dependent on the plasma concentration of lisuride. Following intravenous injection, the prolactin level declined after a so far unexplained lagtime of 0.5 h.

Notes: Abstract The anodic oxidation of N-anions of diacylimides which are acidic enough to be deprotonated by relatively weak bases in protic solvents was investigated with respect to the electrode kinetics and preparative aspects. All imide anions are oxidized in a one-electron step to the respective imide radicals. Of the imides investigated, two were cyclic carboxylic imides (succinimide and phthalimide) three were sulphonyl imides (di-p-toluene and di-benzene sulphimide, dimethane sulphimide) and one was a mixed carboxylate-sulphonate imide (saccharate). The imide radicals produced by anodic oxidation of the dicarboxylate imides do not couple to form a hydrazine derivative but induce solvent oxidation by H-abstraction. The disulphonyl imides couple to unstable hydrazine derivatives although H-abstraction occurs to more than 80%. Only the anodic coupling of the N-anion of imido-disulphonic acid to hydrazine tetrasulphonate discovered by Grinstead [3] can be performed with good selectivity and current and mass yields. The optimum conditions for this reaction are determined in order to show that it may serve in the future as one step in a new hydrazine process.

Notes: Summary The use of canopy and air temperature differences to compute a crop water stress index (CWSI) for assessing plant water status was investigated using cotton crop canopies that either fully or partially covered the ground. The complete ground cover canopy condition was studied in a well watered moisture regime in a rainout shelter with measurements made on six Texas cotton race stocks. The partial ground cover canopy situation was investigated in a well watered moisture regime of a commercial cotton variety ‘Paymaster 266’ grown in the field. The slope of the nonstressed baseline of the CWSI for a cotton canopy with about 50% ground cover was approximately one-half that reported for full canopies. Values of CWSI calculated with “theoretical” and “empirical” procedures agreed more closely under a complete canopy condition than under a partial canopy situation. Values of aerodynamic resistance (r a ) and canopy resistance for well watered soil moisture conditions (r ep )were estimated in order to use the theoretical procedure of computing CWSI. Values of r a ranged from 10 to 15 sm−1 and r cp from 50 to 60 sm−1. Both the theoretical and empirical procedures showed much promise, but more information is needed to develop techniques for evaluating r a and r cp under differing canopy and environmental conditions.

Notes: Abstract The collinear laser-ion beam technique has been used to measure the isotope shift and hyperfine structure in the 6s-6p doublet (4,934Å, 4,554Å) of Ba II for all seven stable isotopes. The influence of the excited2 P 1/2 and2 P 3/2 states on the field shift leads to a difference of 2.5(3)% in the electronicF factors. The specific mass shifts differ by {A′-A} 2.2(3) MHz which corresponds to about 12% of the normal mass shift.

Notes: Abstract Laser-induced fluorescence has been used for detection of CO in different environments. The fluorescence light was obtained by using a two-photon transition between theX 1∑− and theB 1∑− electronical states around 230 nm. Cell measurements indicate a detection limit lower than 0.1 ppm. Measurements in a CH4/air flame and in a low pressure dc discharge were realized with a diode-array detector, which was used in an imaging mode, permitting single-shot CO distributions to be captured.

Notes: Abstract We have combined the techniques of frequency-modulation spectroscopy (FMS) and photochemical-modulation spectroscopy to carry out high-resolution, high-sensitivity absorption measurements on the formyl and amino radicals. Using the (0,90, 0)-(0,01, 0) band of theÃ,2 A″- $$\tilde X$$ ,2 A′ transition of HCO at 614 nm, we obtained a sensitivity limit for absorption of 1.5×10−6. Reconstructed spectra of several HCO lines are presented.
