Notes: The water absorbed by poly(vinyl acetate), PVAc, at 23°C was found in two states. The first, which can account for up to 4 weight percent, was bound to the polymer. The second was in a freezable or clustered form. The latter type of water had no effect on PVAc's glass temperature, whereas, the former kind plasticized Tg. In annealing studies, the enthalpic and dielectric response of PVAc when held at a fixed temperature increment, ΔT, below Tg, was observed to be independent of the amount of bound water. The time dependence of the shift in the dielectric relaxation spectrum and the recovery of the enthalpy towards its equilibrium value as PVAc approached its equilibrium glassy state from a lower temperature as compared to a higher temperature was initially slower. This delayed response to expansion was of the order of the polymer's average relaxation time at the lower temperature. A model was proposed to explain this asymmetric behavior based upon changes in the polymer's free volume as well as its occupied volume.

Notes: The goal of this series of reports is to develop rapid computational procedures for determining the rearrangement of fibers that occurs during the molding of continuous fiber composite components for flat layups. This report considers the shaping of a cloth into a hemisphere. /the numerical procedure developed predicts that a cloth can be shaped into a hemisphere without wrinkling. This prediction is compared with experiment, and various paramenters connected with the shaping calculation are discussed.

Description: The advantages of replacing the conventional wing on a transatlantic business jet with a larger, strut braced wing of aspect ratio 25 were evaluated. The lifting struts reduce both the induced drag and structural weight of the heavier, high aspect ratio wing. Compared to the conventional airplane, the strut braced wing design offers significantly higher lift to drag ratios achieved at higher lift coefficients and, consequently, a combination of lower speeds and higher altitudes. The strut braced wing airplane provides fuel savings with an attendant increase in construction costs.

Notes: Chemical structures limited to phosphines and their derivatives, including phosphine oxides, phosphonium salts and halogen-phosphorus compounds useful for fireproofing are discussed. In addition to these P-C bond containing compounds, structures containing P-O-C bonds are mentioned only if they are directly formed from halophosphorus substances. The general approaches to fireproofing are described. They include physical changes, unreactive additives, reactive comonomers, substitution of other functional groups and addition to a preformed polymer. Much of the literature is reviewed and the commercial importance of certain methods for both cloth and plastics are indicated.

Notes: Whitening phenomena, characterized by optically opaque regions when a highly oriented glassy polymer is immersed in some liquids, were investigated as a function of temperature, extent of molecular orientation, different solvent and molecular weight, using oriented polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) obtained by hot-stretching and cold drawn polycarbonate (PC). Whitened PMMA is highly porous resembling foamed plastics and shows the same Tg as in unwhitened PMMA, while whitened PC is denser with much smaller pores and exhibits melting behavior characteristic of solvent-induced crystallinity. Whitening progresses with a sharp boundary between whitened and unwhitened layers, which advanced at a constant velocity. This feature is similar to Case II transport. However, whitening differs from Case II sorption in that it only occurs in highly oriented polymers in contact with liquids of negligible sorption. Activation enthalpy of 44.1 and 39.7 kcal/mol has been found in a certain temperature range for PMMA/N-methyl formamide (N-MF) and PC/di-isopropyl amine (DIPA) respectively. At a given temperature, a higher extent of orientation leads to faster whitening process. Entropy correlation theory, in which the decrease in the configurational entropy (ΔSc) due to orientation is assumed to approximate an inerease in the activation entropy, was employed to correlate the dependency of the whitening rate on orientation. For hotstretched PMMA, where ΔSc is proportionl to \documentclass{article}\pagestyle{empty}\begin{document}$ (\alpha ^2 + 2/\alpha - 3) $\end{document} since affine deformation applies, a good correlation is observed. For cold drawn PC, correlation was poor, probably because ΔSc cannot be expressed to be proportational to \documentclass{article}\pagestyle{empty}\begin{document}$ (\alpha ^2 + 2/\alpha - 3) $\end{document}. In PMMA, when the molecular weight is in the same order as the average molecular weight between entanglements, the orientation and the whitening rate are both lower than higher molecular weight speciments. This may be due to a smaller number of chain entanglements and consequent chain slippage. In PMMA, whitening induced liquids seem to have a solubility parameter somewhat greater (2.5 ∼ 5.0) than that of PMMA. For PC, no consistent tendency is found.

Notes: Experimental studies of fiber wet-spinning and solution processing of films of molecular composites are presented. The rigid rod polymer was poly (p-phenylenebenzobisthiazole) (PPBT) and the flexible polymers were poly (2,5(6′)-benzimidazole) (ABPBI) and poly (2,5(6′)-benzothiazole) (ABPBT). Effects of the flexible polymer molecular entanglements in solution on the processing are discussed. These fibers and films have very high modulus and strength, which improve upon heat treatment. The uniaxial modulus of highly oriented molecular composites follows the linear rule of mixtures.

Notes: Polymerization of the monomer was investigated in organic solvents such as nitro-compounds, amines, amides, nitriles, ethers, esters, ketones, aldehydes, acids, anhydrides, and some heterocyclic compounds. Crystalline polyvinylchloride was produced in aliphatic aldehyde media at temperatures ranging from 0° to 60°C and highly crystalline polyvinylchloride was synthesized in the presence of preliminarily oxidized butyric aldehyde. The electron diffraction picture of the non-oriented specimen of the polymer exhibited 19 distinct reflexes.

Notes: An expression for the “average” viscosity of a polymeric material realized during an injection molding shot is developed. From this expression certain rheological quantities are taken which should better express ease of molding than do conventional testing methods. Comparison is made between actual molding experience and quality as predicted by the new method.
