Notes: Summary Solar irradiance is estimated on the basis of three hourly cloud observations and compared with the measured irradiance. This indicates that it is possible to predict daily global irradiation to within 15% and thus illustrates the potential for extending the solar energy data base available for heliotechnology in Western Australia.

Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung Mit Verwendung von Jahres- und Monatswerten des lokalen Zonalindex werden die Zirkulationsänderungen in den letzten hundert Jahren im Gebiet A (20°W–10°E) und im Gebiet B (10°E–40°E) untersucht.
Notes: Summary Using annual and monthly values of the local zonal index, we study the circulation change during the past hundred years for the area A (20°W–10°E) and area B (10°E–40°E). For the area A the results are: 1) During the subperiod (1873–1902) blocking systems were predominant and westerly type of circulation was less frequent. 2) For the subperiod (1903–1932) an abnormal situation prevailed in 80% of the years, towards the direction of W zonal flux. 3) The third subperiod (1933–1972) was characterized from the point of view of intensity of zonal flux as intermediate. For the area B showed that the prevailing circulation was actually meridional or “Low Index”. Also for the area B the easterly zonal circulation was 26%.

Notes: Abstract Dam-building across naturally flowing rivers tends to decrease discharge of surplus water into the sea, reduce nutrient concentration in estuaries and coastal waters, and diminish plankton blooms as well as fish landings. Depletion of nutrients and organic matter along with reduced mud and silt deposition affect benthic life on the continental shelf. Reduced mud and silt deposition leads to coastal retreat. Dams, especially those constructed for hydro-electric purposes, hinder migration of fishes and decapods. Discharge from dams can create barriers at high or low flows, cause delays, disrupt normal behavioural routine and change the travel speed of migratory animals. Where all spawners of a given population are frequently kept away from the breeding site, the population faces extinction.

Notes: Abstract We present differential cross sections andΔ ++ spin density matrix elements for the photoproduction processγp→π − Δ ++ and differential cross sections for the processγp→π + Δ 0. The incident photon energy dependence is studied and a comparison is made with previous experiments and with the predictions of a theoretical model.

Notes: Abstract During the past two decades, the information explosion has led to a demand for systems of storing and retrieving information in every branch of science and technology. A number of the larger abstracting services are already experimenting with systems covering so great an area that the use of a computer is essential. Since, however, the, field of rheology is relatively small a simple classification and retrieval system is being developed, for use inRheology Abstracts, based upon ordinary 132-hole edge-punched cards. The first half of the system deals with the rheology of fluids and is already in use; it is described in detail in a recent paper (1). The second half, dealing with the rheology of solids, is still being developed. In the fluids system, holes are punched to indicate the following essential features of a paper: general nature; language; type of fluid; rheological properties; type of flow; boundary conditions; important variables and effects; theoretical treatment; type of apparatus; industrial processes involved. As a result two simple hand operations will serve to retrieve, for example, all the papers concerned with turbulent flow of suspensions, or with fracture in polymer melts. Additional operations lead to a narrower, more precise, retrieval. At present the classifying is being done by abstractors. It is hoped that authors will become familiar with the system and will make a practice of classifying their own papers; this would lead to more accurate classification and to the benefit of all concerned.

Notes: Abstract In this paper, the radiation losses caused by film thickness and refractive index discontinuities in asymmetric slab waveguides are examined theoretically. A technique developed by Mahmoud and Beal for dealing with the continuous part of the radiation spectrum is used. Several numerical examples which show the radiation loss for various waveguide configurations are presented and discussed and, where appropriate, comparisons with other related work made. In the case of asymmetric thickness steps, the radiation losses are found to be appreciably higher than those computed for symmetric guides. The radiation losses for guides having the same thickness were found to decrease as the guide thickness increased. Once the TE1 mode become guided, the losses decreased rapidly. However, if the two guides had different thickness then it was found that the losses exhibited a minimum.

Notes: Abstract The impedance spectrum of an undischarged commercial Leclanché cell (Ever Ready type SP11) is presented in the forms of the Sluyters plot and the modified Randies plot. The decomposition of the experimental cell impedances into the component parts has been achieved using a computer. The decomposition process and the component processes representing the overall cell behaviour are described.

Notes: Abstract The polarization characteristics of acid zinc sulphate electrolytes containing various amounts of germanium and cobalt were examined by cyclic voltammetry. The effects of zinc and acid concentration, temperature, and surface preparation were also investigated. Small concentrations of impurities are shown to cause measurable changes in polarization behaviour. Levels as low as 0.02 mgl−1 Ge and 0.1 mgl−1 Co can be detected using this technique. The actual mechanism of impurity behaviour is more clearly delineated using this technique and evaluation of the data from these tests indicate that germanium and cobalt form local galvanic cells. The results of these short-term tests are shown to correlate with classical long-term efficiency tests. The deposit morphologies obtained for short-time cathodic cycles were also studied using scanning electron microscopy.

Notes: Abstract The impedances of the various component parts of the Leclanché cell have been measured in experiments in which the complete cell is progressively built up. The results confirm previous conclusions that the zinc ‘can’ provides the impedance characteristic of the assembled cell. The contributions of the other parts of the cell are discussed.
