Notes: An efficient and flexible method for the preparation of silyl nitronates is described (see 1-10). NMR. spectral investigations indicate a rapid 1,3-silyl migration process, with an activation energy of about 10 kcal mol-1. X-ray crystallographic studies on the silyl nitronates 3 and 8 show structures that lean towards an SN2 retention pathway at silicon.

Notes: Enhancement of Detection Sensitivity of Cyclosporin A by Derivatization with 2-NapthylselenylchlorideThe UV./HPLC. detection sensitivity of cyclosporine A 1, an immunosuppressive cyclic undecapeptide containing one D-aminoacid and seven N-methylated aminoacids, is enhanced by a factor of 3-4 (limit of detection 5 ng) by conversion of the characteristic side chain of amino-acid-1 to the β-naphthylseleno-substituted tetrahydrofuran derivative 4.

Notes: Preparation of 1,3-Diketones and of Nitro-diketones by (1:1)-Acylation of Lithium Enolates with Acyl ChloridesSlow addition of precooled solutions of lithium enolates in THF (Fig. 1) to solutions of equimolar amounts of acyl chlorides in the same solvent at temperatures between - 80 and - 100° furnishes 1, 3-diketones in acceptable to good yields (Tables 1-3). Even 3-nitropropionyl and 4-nitrobutyryl chloride can be employed for the (1:1)-acylation of enolates to give the synthetically useful 5- and 6-nitro-1, 3-diketones 13 and 25, respectively. The scope and the limitations of this method of preparing 1, 3-diketones are given and are compared with alternative methods.

Notes: Three methods are described by which diastereomerically enriched nitroaldols and their O-silylated derivatives can be prepared. threo-Nitroaldols prevail up to 10:1 over the erythro-isomers if doubly deprotonated nitroaldols 28 are quenched with acetic acid (THF/HMPT or DMPU, - 100°) (see Scheme 5 and Table 2). O-Trimethyl- or O-(t-butyl)dimethylsilylated (TBDMSi) erythro-nitroaldols can be obtained by protonation of the corresponding lithium nitronates (35, 39) in THF at low temperature (see Schemes 6 and 7). The erythro-O-TBDMSi-nitroaldol derivatives are also formed in the fluoride catalyzed addition of TBDMSi-nitronates (40-45) to aldehydes (see Schemes 8 and 9), In the latter reaction no 1,2-asymmetric induction is observed if a-branched silylnitronates or aldehydes are employed (see 48/49 and 50/51) - The stereochemical course of the reactions leading to erythro-O-TBDMSi-nitroaldols follows topological rules of broad applicability (see Scheme 10); possible mechnisms are discussed. - The configuration of diasteromerically 13C-NMR. Spectroscopy. - Some examples of the preparation of diastereimerically enriched 1,2-aminolcohols by reduction of the correspondence nitro compounds without loss of configurational purity are described (see Schemes 11 and 12).

Notes: New battery systems. The reversible storage of electrical energy plays a central role in the development of electric vehicles, load levelling in power stations, and technical utilization of solar energy. Electrochemistry offers interesting solutions with optimal energy density; however, these have reached technical maturity in only a few cases. The conventional lead/acid accumulator is being further improved among aqueous systems. Moreover, various other lines of development have been initiated in recent years, such as nickel/zinc and chlorine/zinc accumulators, which offer totally fresh perspectives from an electrochemical and engineering point of view. In the case of zinc/air and aluminium/air batteries, external redeposition of the metal is envisaged. From a practical point of view, aqueous systems are unsurpassable. Metals with an extremely high negative potential like sodium or lithium can only be cycled in the absence of water. Systems with molten salts or solid electrolytes do not suffer from this drawback. The sodium/sulfur battery, which is characterized by readily available cell components of low environmental impact, is presently undergoing intensive development. However, thermal discharge represents a technical problem. The future of these new developments will be governed by their economics, energy density, energy efficiency, power density, and last but not least by their cyclability. These properties have not yet been optimized in a single system.

Notes: The effect of basic aluminium dibenzoate upon the supercooling of polypropylene fractions of molecular weight 9.2 × 103-1.25 × 106 was determined by differential thermal analysis. The response to heterogeneous nucleation within the precision of the method used appears to be only slightly dependent, if at all, upon the molecular weight of the polymer.

Notes: A model nucleating agent for polypropylene crystallization is described. A series of compounds consisting mainly of organocarboxylic acid salts is evaluated as heterogeneous nucleating agent for polypropylene crystallization by measuring their effect upon the polymer supercooling. Sodium benzoate and basic aluminium dibenzoate were among the best nucleating agents found. The nucleating abilities of the various compounds are discussed in terms of their structural features.

Notes: The effect of cooling, nucleation, and spherulitic growth rates on the properties of polypropylene is discussed briefly. A differential thermal analysis technique is described for evaluating the relative extent of heterogeneous nucleation that occurs in a particular polypropylene composition. The method is based upon a nucleating agent's ability to reduce the relatively large amount of supercooling that occurs upon crystallization of polypropylene. Compounds are shown to vary widely in their effectiveness as heterogeneous nucleating agents in polypropylene. The relationships between the degree of supercooling of a particular polypropylene composition and its relative clarity, tensile properties, density, and morphology are shown.
