Notes: Abstract We introduce some variations of the interval Newton method for bounding solutions to a set ofn nonlinear equations. It is pointed out that previous implementations of Krawczyk's method are very inefficient and an improved version is given. A superior type of Newton method is introduced.

Notes: Abstract This paper deals with the computation of the depth to the magnetic interface from the total magnetic field intensity values obtained along profiles in the offshore area between Vengurla and Rajapur bay off the West Coast of India, by the application of one dimensional spectral analysis method. From the response characteristics of the total field magnetic values it is surmised that the magnetic interface may be identified with the Deccan trap series of rocks which are likely to form the magnetic basement rocks in this area. The plot of depths to the basement rocks as obtained from spectral analysis indicates that the basement is sloping towards outer edge of the Continental Shelf though not uniformly.

Notes: Abstract This paper presents an extensive study on the dependence of the mean number of the fast fragment of the target nucleus 〈n g〉 on the incident beam energy in proton-nucleus interaction in emulsion in the range 6·2≦E 0≦400 GeV/c. It has been observed that 〈n g〉 decreases in the range 6·2≦E 0≦200 GeV/c, then increases and attains an approximately steady value up to 400 GeV/c. It is very difficult to explain this behaviour with the help of the existing nuclear production models.

Notes: Abstract The object of the present paper is to investigate the radial motion of a solid spherical body, assumed to be homogeneous, isotropic and elastic, in presence of a magnetic field in the azimuthal direction. The body is assumed to be in a state of initial stress which is hydrostatic in nature. This theory of radial motion of a solid spherical body in a magnetic field has been utilised to find the small radial motion of a solid Earth assumed to be homogeneous isotropic elastic sphere in presence of a magnetic field in the azimuthal direction. Considering the effect of gravity and the initial stress produced by slow process of creep due to extra masses over the surface of the Earth, the fundamental equations of motion are derived which are non-linear in character and are solved. The times of a desired radial displacement are calculated in presence of a magnetic field only and in presence of the same magnetic field, initial stress and gravitational field, which are compared and exhibited numerically.

Notes: Summary From three sets of crosses involving the phenotypes chocolate, red oxide, green with chocolate streaks and green with red oxide streaks, the action of the genes governing the phenotypes of the pods ofCajanus cajan (L.) Millsp. has been proposed. GeneL controls production of chocolate colour,L r an allelomorph ofL hitherto unreported, controls production of red oxide colour and geneD controls distribution of this colour. As regards inheritance of these two genes, the relationships betweenL andL r isL〉L r andD is incompletely dominant overd. The genotypes of the different phenotypes have been presented.

Notes: Summary The kinetics of oxidation of some neutralized α-hydroxy acids such as lactic (LA), mandelic (MA), α-hydroxyisobutyric (IB) and benzilic (BA) acid by hexachloroiridate(IV) have been studied. The oxidation products are acetaldehyde, benzaldehyde, acetone and benzophenone for the respective reactions, which are first order with respect to each substrate and to iridium(IV). The reaction rate increases with increase in pH and salt concentrations. The temperature influence is quite marked in all these reactions. A mechanism involving the formation of an unstable complex, which decomposesvia a free radical pathway to give the respective reaction products, is proposed.

Notes: Summary Schiff base complexes of trichloro(cyclopentadienyl)titanium(IV) having the general formulae CpTiCl3SB and CpTiCl(SB') (where SB=Schiff bases derived from thiocarbohydrazide and benzaldehyde,m-nitrobenzaldehyde,p-nitrobenzaldehyde, acetophenone,p-hydroxyacetophenone, anisaldehyde, cinnamaldehyde and vanilline; SB'H2=Schiff bases derived from thiocarbohydrazide and salicylaldehyde, oro-hydroxyacetophenone) have been synthesized by reaction of appropriate Schiff base with trichloro(cyclopentadienyl)-titanium in anhydrous dichloromethane. The complexes were characterized by elemental analysis, electrical conductance, magnetic measurements and spectral (electronic, i.r. and1H n.m.r.) studies. Proton n.m.r. spectra indicate that there is rapid rotation of the cyclopentadienyl ring around the metal-ring axis on the n.m.r. time scale at 25°C.

Notes: Abstract The synthesis and processing of the major storage proteins in soybean cotyledons was studied both in vivo and in vitro. The α and α′ subunits of 7S as well as the 11S proteins are synthesized as higher molecular weight-precursors on membrane-bound polysomes. The initial translation products of the 7S are proteolytically cleaved during translation suggesting the removal of a ‘signal peptide’ as evidenced by the presence of 2α and 2α′ peptides immunoreactive with 7S antibody in the in vitro chain completion products of the membrane-bound polysomes. This is followed or accompanied by cotranslational glycosylation, which increases their size equivalent to that of initially-synthesized precursors. In vivo pulse-labelled 7S α and α′ products are of slightly higher molecular weights than the immunoprecipitable chain-completion products, indicating further post-translational modifications. A slow post-translational processing during a period of 1.5 to 16 h yields the final 7S α and α′ glycoproteins. Acidic and basic subunits of the 11S protein appear to be synthesized from common large molecular weight (60K-59K) precursors. Antibodies to the 11S acidic component recognize both acidic and basic domains in the precursor while those raised against basic subunits appear to be specific for that region only. The processing of the 11S precursor is also very slow and occurs post-translationally. This slow rate of processing, coupled with a temporal difference in the synthesis of 7S and 11S components, suggests a highly coordinated mechanism for synthesis and packaging of these proteins into protein bodies during seed development.
