Notes: Abstract The response of the European elm bark beetle,Scolytus multistriatus, to host bacterial isolates was studied qualitatively under field conditions. Initial experiments indicated that such isolates were attractive to in-flight beetles. These isolates, identified asBacillus subtilis (five strains),B. pumilus, andEnterobacter cloacae, were grown on nutrient agar in glass vials and attached to sticky traps in elm woods. Although beetles were caught on the bacterial isolate-baited traps, the catches were variable, inconsistent, and often contradictory from one experiment to another. High numbers ofS. multistriatus were caught on traps baited with three strains ofB. subtilis, but in addition to thesubtilis strains, there were also aerial contaminants in the treatments, namelyE. aerogenes, Corynebacterium sp., andFlavobacterium sp. Also, relatively high catches were recorded on nutrient agar controls. When elm wood-bark plugs, sterilized (by gamma irradiation) and unsterilized, were placed in vials with the host bacterial isolates, the presence or absence of fresh elm, gamma irradiated or not, had no noticeable effect on beetle attractancy.

Notes: Abstract Enthalpies of dilution both of solutions of N-acetylsarcosinamide and of ternary solutions equimolal in N-acetylsarcosinamide and N-acetylglycinamide, N-acetyl-L-alaninamide, N-acetyl-L-valinamide or N-acetyl-L-leucinamide have been determined by a microcalorimetric method. The results were employed to calculate the pairwise enthalpic coefficients for both homotactic (like-like) and heterotactic (like-unlike) solute interactions. These pairwise interaction coefficients have been analyzed by means of a group additivity approach and some comments on the utility of this, when applied to such systems, are made.

Notes: Abstract At the 1952 Census, less than 6 percent of national highways and prefectural roads in Japan were paved, and mechanically-propelled vehicles accounted for only 6 percent of total vehicle registrations; by 1981, 2792 km of expressway were in service (an addi tional 2623 km were under construction or being surveyed) and her industry was dominating world markets for motor vehicles. This paper, drawing on material translated from the Japanese language, examines the history of transport planning and engineering ideas that inspired the modernisation of the highway system in the period after the Pacific War. Three distinct phases are identified: (a) a politically and economically dependent Japanese state which borrowed methods from the U.S.A. in formulating 5-year national road programmes; (b) a more independent state, absorbing western techniques and refining them in 23 urban transportation studies; and (c) a donor state, exporting these ideas to Southeast Asian cities as one instrument of Japanese foreign policy. The triad of international antecedents, domestic context and content, and foreign application is a suitable framework when interpreting the intricate relationships between transport and society.

Notes: Summary The reactions of D2 with OsHCl(CO)(PCy3)2 and the deuteriation reaction with C2H5OD have been studied. The deuteriation ratios in the PCy3 ligand have been calculated. The reaction mechanism for the deuteriation in C2H5OD is discussed.

Notes: Abstract A high-level language for array and vector processors is analyzed by the methods of denotational semantics. The analysis leads to the identification of a set of primitives suitable for the portable programming of array and vector processors. Discussion of the primitives includes consideration of the efficiency with which they may be implemented on different machines, and their possible application to portable programming, the design of intermeiate languages, and the design of future array and vector processors.

Notes: Abstract Fissionlike (FL) phenomena for systems around mass 100 have been shown previously interpretable in terms of dynamical fission. This appears to be dependent on the entrance channel mass asymmetry. We have studied the fissionlike exit channel in the84Kr+24Mg reaction atE(Kr)=5.8 MeV/u. This energy is just above the threshold of fission, so that a clear separation between the Deep Inelastic Component (DIG) and the FL one can be achieved. The bombarding energy corresponds to the same excitation energy in the composite system108Cd (E *=101 MeV) as in the32S (158 MeV) on76Ge reaction we studied earlier and for which fusion-evaporation along with fission-like contributions were measured. The width of the FL distribution confirms the previously observed dependence with the mass asymmetry in the entrance channel which is consistent with the extra push model.

Notes: Abstract The production of neutral pions in nucleus nucleus collisions with 44 MeV/u Ar projectiles from the accelerator GANIL has been observed. The angular distributions indicate a collective production process, and the pion spectra reflect properties of the collision dynamics.
