Notes: The minimum energy, Qmin, necessary to convert an ion m1+ to a doubly charged ion m12+ is obtained for 19 different ions from methane, ammonia, water and hydrogen sulphide by charge stripping using nitrogen collision gas. The ions studied include the [MH]+ ions formed by chemical ionization in a high pressure source. Stable m12+ ions could not be formed in the case of [NH4]+, [NH]+·, [H2O]+· and [OH]+. Even in these cases the value of Qmin could be estimated by studying the fragments formed from the unstable m2+ ions. In several cases, the energy required to form m12+ ions is less than the literature value for the ionization energy of m1+. This is discussed in terms of the possibility of the presence of excited states of m1+ in the present experiments.

Notes: A new linked scan is described by which fragmentations occurring in the second field free region of a two sector instrument can be monitored. The scan can be used only if the first stage allows selection of ions according to their masses. The magnetic sector and electric sector are scanned in unison so that the product B2E is maintained constant. A spectrum of all parents of a preselected daughter ion is obtained and the resolution depends only on the mass resolution of the magnetic sector.

Notes: The mass spectra of C-alkylaziridines show that generally β-cleavage is the most important fragmentation, although α-cleavages also occur as do γ-, and δ- and ∊-cleavages in appropriate examples. A surprising rearrangement of the β-cleavage ions has been explained as the result of a four-centre cyclization followed by fragmentation. Other decompositions occur via transannular cleavages with and without hydrogen transfer. α-Cleavage appears to be the most important fragmentation of N-alkylaziridines. N-Phenylaziridine shows very marked 1,2-phenyl-migration before fragmentation.

Notes: The use of secondary targets with commercially available high power X-ray spectroscopy tubes has been investigated as a means of providing an excitation source for X-ray energy spectroscopy. A comparison has been made between the secondary target mode of excitation and the use of the tube directly. Results from this comparison show the superiority of the secondary target technique. Examples of analysis using the secondary target excitation are given to illustrate the high data rates and low background this technique has to offer.

Notes: CARS spectra of water vapour at elevated pressures (1-16 bar) and temperatures (300-800 K) have been investigated experimentally and theoretically. A theoretical model of the CARS spectrum of water vapour based on Gordon's rotational diffusion model was tested. The model was adapted to include the effects of vibrational relaxation and dephasing processes. Good agreement was found between experiment and theory for all conditions investigated. Rotational inelastic collisions are dominant and contribute approximately 65% to the overall individual molecular linewidths. As part of the data analysis a new measurement of dσ/dω (H2O)=1.10 × 10-34 ± 20% m2 sr-1 has been made.

Description: Data for evaluating the effects of moisture and temperature on the integrity of fiber composite components was gathered. In particular, the static and cyclic performance of three composite laminates containing flaws was investigated at room temperature and at 422 K (300 F) in wet and dry conditions.

Description: The molecular and atomic mechanisms for the hydrogen-iodine exchange reaction are treated theoretically by means of extensive classical trajectories calculated on a reasonable potential energy surface on which the single adjustable parameter is the iodine-core effective charge. The analysis shows the molecular mechanism to be dynamically forbidden, but gives an over-all rate constant for the atomic mechanism that is in agreement with the experimental values. It is indicated that the formation of a weak H2I complex plays an important dynamical role if the atomic mechanism is limited to reactions with collision complexes involving no more than two hydrogen atoms and two iodine atoms. Excellent agreement with experiment is obtained for the rate constant for the recombination I+I+H2 yields I2+H2 and its negative temperature coefficient.

Description: An experimental program was carried out to investigate the effects of temperature and moisture on the damage development and fracture response of graphite/epoxy composites. Fracture response data were obtained for 20-ply laminates of different layup patterns for both room temperature and immediately after the application of a temperature transient causing the specimen to attain 150 C. It is found that elevated temperature degrades the notched strength of some laminates while not degrading others. The unnotched strength of all laminates tested at elevated temperatures was degraded. The effect of preloading on damage growth and moisture absorption, the effect of autoclave pressure during the laminate cure on fracture, and the variation of interlaminar shear properties with layup, moisture exposure, laminate material, and cure pressure are also discussed.
