Notes: Abstract The 1.4–22.4 Å range of the soft X-ray spectrum includes a multitude of emission lines which are important for the diagnosis of plasmas in the 1.5–50 million degree temperature range. In particular, the hydrogen and helium-like ions of all abundant solar elements with Z 〉 7 have their primary transitions in this region and these are especially useful for solar flare and active region studies. The soft X-ray polychromator (XRP) is a high resolution experiment working in this spectral region. The XRP consists of two instruments with a common control, data handling and power system. The bent crystal spectrometer is designed for high time resolution studies in lines of Fe i-Fe xxvi and Ca xix. The flat crystal scanning spectrometer provides for 7 channel polychromatic mapping of flares and active regions in the resonance lines of O viii, Ne ix, Mg xi, Si xiii, S xv, Ca xix, and Fe xxv with 14″ spatial resolution. In its spectral scanning mode it covers essentially the entire 1.4–22.5 Å region. This paper summarizes the scientific objectives of the XRP experiment and describes the characteristics and capabilities of the two instruments. Sufficient technical information for experiment feasibility studies is included and the resources and procedures planned for the use of the XRP within the context of the Solar Maximum Mission is briefly discussed.

Notes: Abstract The influence of the quantum size effect (QSE) in very thin Pd and Au films (0.5〈d〈10 [nm]) deposited on glass tips is studied by means of field emission at various anode potentials. The thickness-dependent field emission current characteristics show short periodic variations with a period of about 0.3 nm for both Pd and Au. The measured QSE oscillations and their amplitudes differ strongly from those expected qualitatively from model calculations for the smallest thicknesses. A model for the metal film based on a modification of the uniform background model is presented, and the thickness dependence of the conductance and the field emission current density are qualitatively discussed. Possible explanations of some discrepancies between calculations and the measured field emission current characteristics are proposed.

Notes: [Auszug] IN my monograph “Axialität der Lichtemission und Atomstruktur” (Polytechnische Buchhandlung A. Seydel, Berlin, 1927) I have discussed a case of asymmetry of radiation; if atoms of an element, say of helium, pass through a gas such as hydrogen, under certain conditions for some spectral lines of ...

Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung Reife menschliche Placentazotten wurden enzymhistochemisch inkubiert, fixiert, in Epon eingebettet und 0,5–2 μ dick geschnitten.
Notes: Summary Mature human placental villi were incubated enzymehistochemically, fixed, embedded in Epon and out into 0.5 to 2 μ thick sections. Differentiation and degeneration of the trophoblastic surface covering of placental villi can be subdivided and classified into 5 stages according to structure and enzyme content. I. Low enzymatic activity is exhibited by the undifferentiated cytotrophoblast. It represents the mitotic stem cells of the trophoblast. II. Strong activity of the glycolytic enzymes is characteristic for the maturing cytotrophoblast until its syncytial fusion. III. Strong activity of the enzymes serving specific placental functions (Steroid-DH, GDH, aP, G6P, βG1) is displayed by the syncytium without any degenerative changes. Syncytial fusion of mature cytotrophoblast effects a continous regeneration of this type of syncytiotrophoblast. IV. The strongest activity of G6PDH and αGPDH with a weak demonstration of glycolytic enzymes and slightly reduced activity of the enzymes serving specific placental functions is found in syncytium showing regressive alterations. V. The demonstration only of the LAP and the sP characterizes the degenerative syncytium without any functional capability. When these enzymes too become inactive the villous trophoblast is changed into fibrinoid.

Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung Enzymhistochemisch ist der Syncytiotrophoblast an der Oberfläche reifer menschlicher Placentazotten in verschiedene ineinander übergehende Abschnitte gegliedert.
Notes: Summary At the surface of mature human placental villi, the syncytotrophoblast is, in terms of enzyme-histochemistry, arranged in different intertwining sections. Taking into account light and electron microscopical findings as well as embryological and biochemical data, one can differ the following: 1. Thin epithelial plates with high G6P, HK and βGl activity. Processes of passive diffusion and the most intensive glucose transport appear to take place here. 2. Thick epithelial plates containing in addition aP, ATPase and 5Nase, enzymes indicating energy-consuming substance exchange. 3. Thicker syncytium devoid of nucleus with high activity of sP, LAP, GDH and αGPDH. Resorption with processes of decomposition and alteration seem to overweight here. 4. Syncytium with nucleus additionally showing high activity of Krebs cycle dehydro-genases. They enable energy-consuming synthetical and secretory processes. 5. Syncytial and proliferation sprouts with strongest HK, G6PDH, LDH and citrate-cycle enzyme activity. They are though to be the main center of energy, RNA and HCG production. 6. Sections of syncytium with smooth endoplasmic reticulum and tubular mitochondria showing distinct activity of 3βOHDH and 17βOHDH which indicate intensive estrogen and progesterone metabolism. 7. Syncytium layers above Langhans cells with high 17βOHDH activity. Together with the neighbouring epithelial plates, they could be the point of estriol synthesis.
