    Notes: The relationships between the size of the articular surface of the mandibular condyle and masticatory muscle size, tooth size, diet, and biomechanical variables associated with mastication were studied by taking 12 measurements on skulls of 253 adult female anthropoid primates, including three to ten specimens from each of 32 species.In regressions of condylar length, width, or area against body weight, logarithmic transformations substantially improve the fit of the equations compared with untransformed data. There is a strong relationship betwden condylar measurements and body weight, with all correlations being .94 or higher. The slopes of the allometric regressions of length, width, and area of the condylar head indicate slight positive allometry with body size.Folivorous primates have smaller condyles than frugivorous primates, and colobines have smaller condyles than cebids, cercopithecines, or hominoids. When colobines are eliminated, the differences between frugivores and folivores are not significant. However, the two species with the relatively largest condyles are Pongo pygmaeus and Cercocebus torquatus, suggesting that there may be a relationship between unusually large condylar dimensions and the ability to crak hard nuts between the teeth.Cranial features having strong positive correlations with condylar dimensions include facial prognathism, maxillary incisor size, maxillar postcanine area, mandibular ramus breadth, and temporal fossa area. These data are interpreted as indicating that relatively large condyles are associated with relatively large masticatory muscles, relatively inefficient mandibular biomechanics, and a large dentition. These relationships support the growing evidence that the temporomandibular joint is a stress-bearing joint in normal function.

    Notes: Two nucleoside transport systems have been verified and separated by mating and recombination experiments. The recipient strain was a mutant which is negative for transport of all nucleosides.The two systems differ in specificity and in regulation. One system transports pyrimidine and adenine in specificity and in regulation. One system transports pyrimidine and adenine nucleosides, but not guanine nucleosides. It is regulated by the cytR gene. The other system transports all nucleosides and is regulated by the cytR as well as by the deoR genes.Enzyme assays performed on whole cells of strains, able or unable to transport nucleosides, indicate that the nucleoside catabolizing enzymes are located inside the permeability barrier of the cell.

    Description / Table of Contents: Using appearance potential measurements it is shown that chain length effects in the formation of the title ions can be assigned to an entropy and energetic factor. In addition it is demonstrated that the genesis of the stable [M-PhO]+ ions proceeds via a transition state resulting in the formation of cyclic structures. Acyclic structures or complex rearrangements of the carbon skeleton can probably be excluded.
    Notes: Mit Hilfe von Auftrittspotentialmessungen wird belegt, daß die bei der Bildung der Titel-Ionen beobachteten Kettenlängen-Effekte sowohl durch entropische als auch energetische Faktoren gesteuert werden. Zusätzlich wird gezeigt, daß die Genese der stabilen [M-PhO]+-Ionen - unabhängig von der Kettenlänge der reaktiven Molekül-Ionen-über einen Übergangszustand erfolgt, der zu cyclischen Produkten fiihrt. Acyclische Spezies oder solche, die durch komplexe Umtagerung des Kohlenstoffgerüstes entstehen könnten, sind wahrscheinlich auszuschließlen.

    Notes: Mass spectrometric sensitivity data for the compounds cholesterol, cholestane, DDT, decafluorotriphenyl-phosphine, morphine, LSD and methyl stearate have been developed over a period of time and under a variety of conditions. This information is presented on both a relative and an absolute basis. With the exception of morphine, relative sensitivities were repoducible to within a factor of three over a six month period. This reproducibility facilitates quantitation and a single standard can be used for calibration of organic compounds from various classes. Detection limits of 50 femtograms for LSD are realized for samples introduced via the direct inlet probe.

    Notes: Extreme and rapid changes in the synthesis of messenger RNAs and proteins accompany differentiation in wing tissues of Drosophila. Of the six actin genes, at least three are expressed in wing cells, some during the most extreme changes in cell shape. However, different messages of the set appear, decay, and reappear on a regulated temporal program. These results show that actin expression is stage-specific in a single cell type.

    Notes: Mild heat treatments applied to whole animals or cell cultures of Drosophila prior to lethal heat shocks result in increased survival and protection against phenocopy induction. The optimal condition for the preliminary mild heat treatment is that which induces the synthesis of heat-shock proteins but does not turn off the protein synthesis that is in progress. Recovery of protein synthesis but not RNA synthesis following a drastic heat shock is much enhanced by the pretreatments. The results suggest that the protection for survival and against phenocopy induction is due to storage of messenger RNA.

    Notes: We have for some years been making use of phenocopies in Drosophila, as induced by heat shock, as tools for studies of the molecular events in morphogenesis [18, 21, 22]. In this paper, we have brought together some accumulated information on the conditions for phenocopy production, on a temporal sequence of sensitivity to induction, and on the nature of many of the morphogenetic abnormalities that can be induced. In general, the induction of phenocopies by heat shock requires conditions drastic enough to turn off transcriptional activities but not extreme enough to prevent recovery. This situation is most easily achieved in pupal stages where heat resistance is high, but even in this range, resistance varies with the stage of development.The phenocopies described resemble, for the most part, mutants that affect structures derived from epithelial differentiation or muscle development.

    Description: Five Japanese macaques and five other Old World monkeys were trained to discriminate among field-recorded Japanese macaque vocalizations. One task required discrimination of a communicatively relevant acoustic feature ("peak"), and a second required discrimination of an orthogonal feature of the same vocalizations ("pitch"). The Japanese animals more proficiently discriminated the peak feature when stimuli were presented to the right ear (primarily left cerebral hemisphere), as opposed to the left ear (primarily right hemisphere). In discriminating the pitch feature, the Japanese animals either showed (i) a left-ear processing advantage or (ii) no ear advantage. The comparison animals, with one exception, showed no ear advantage in processing either feature of the vocalizations.     Description: Infrared and visible imagery from VAS are used to delineate mid- and lower-tropospheric moisture fields for a variety of severe storm cases in the southern and central United States. The ability of sequences of images to isolate areas of large negative vertical moisture gradients and apparent convective instability prior to the onset of convective storms is assessed. A variety of image combination procedures are used to deduce the stability fields which are then compared with the available radiosonde data. The results for several severe storm cases indicate that VAS can detect mid- and low-level mesoscale water vapor fields as distinct radiometric signals. The VAS imagery shows a strong tendency for thunderstorms to develop along the edges of bands of midlevel dryness as they overtake either preexisting or developing low-level moisture maxima. Image sequences depict the speed with which deep moist and dry layers can develop and move.
