Notes: The corrections to the equilibrium rate of the chemical reaction A+B→products are analyzed for the Lorentz gas composed of light particles A reacting with heavy particles B in the presence of heavy particles of a carrier gas C. Particles B and C are treated as a heat bath. The reaction is analyzed under conditions in which the products can be neglected. The model of reacting hard spheres (line-of-centers model) introduced by Present is used. Analysis is performed in two ways: (1) By obtaining analytical expressions following from the Chapman–Enskog perturbation solution of the Boltzmann equation generalized for gases reacting chemically. (2) By obtaining numerical results which follow from a numerical solution of a partial differential equation which can be derived from the Boltzmann equation for the reactive Lorentz gas. It is shown that for a specified region of system parameters both types of solution of the Boltzmann equation coincide. The comparison of both methods permits us to find out under which conditions the perturbation method of solution may be used.

Notes: Dispersibility of soy protein isolates was improved by adjusting pH to 12 and acidifying to pH 6.5. Alkaline treated isolates added to reconstituted nonfat milk reduced rennet induced coagulum firmness and syneresis more than did untreated soy protein isolates. Treated soy protein added to reconstituted nonfat dry milk reduced coagulum firmness and syneresis more than untreated soy protein. Soy protein interference with coagulum firmness and syneresis increased with an increase in pH becoming most severe at pH values above 11. Adjusting the pH of reconstituted NFDM in the absence of soy protein to pH 8 and holding for 30 min before adjusting it back to pH 6.5 had no effect on coagulum firmness or syneresis. However, higher pH treatments (pH 10 and above) caused reduction in coagulum firmness and in syneresis.

Notes: Abstract Excess charge carrier kinetics in moderately doped pSi wafers were investigated with a contactless transient photoconductivity method, i.e. the time-resolved microwave conductivity (TRMC) method. The surface structure of the wafers was changed by etching and polishing, the volume structure by irradiation with high-energy electrons. Comparison of the photoconductivity decay after excitation by strongly absorbed light and by weakly absorbed light was used to distinguish between surface and volume decay processes. The experimental results deviate from predictions based on a linear surface decay rate. These results are discussed and suggestions are made for the use of transient photoconductivity measurements to characterize semiconductor wafers.

Notes: Abstract Transport rates, measured by weighing snow blown into a filter fabric trap, were greater over hard snow or ice than for the same wind speed over soft, fresh snow surfaces. Analysis of wind speed profiles from nine blizzards showed that friction between moving particles and the surface was less, and particle speeds were greater over hard surfaces. Transport rates at a given wind speed increased rapidly as aerodynamic roughness decreased in the rough-smooth transition region. Bagnold's theory for bed load transport provided a useful framework for the analysis.

Notes: Summary Porous films are prepared by depositing copper onto glass substrates at 77 K. The structure of the films is characterized ellipsometrically (λ=632.8 nm) and by means of resistivity measurements. The measured dielectric function of the porous films isɛ=−6.5 −4.6i, a value which deviates strongly from the corresponding value of bulk copper (ɛ m=−18 −1.6i). A quantitative evaluation on the basis of the EMA theory yields a void concentration of about 20%. In addition, the interaction of the films with oxygen is investigated. The gas tends to penetrate into the near-surface portion of the voids.

Notes: Summary Two cDNA clones containing the complete coding region of a developmentally controlled (tuber-specific) as well as environmentally inducible (wound-inducible) gene from potato (Solanum tuberosum) have been sequenced. The open reading frame codes for 154 amino acids. Its sequence is highly homologous to the proteinase inhibitor II from tomato, indicating that the cDNA's encode the corresponding proteinase inhibitor II of potato. In addition the putative potato proteinase inhibitor II contains a sequence which is completely homologous with that of another small peptide proteinase inhibitor from potato, called PCI-I. Evidence is presented that this small peptide is probably derived from the proteinase inhibitor II by posttranslational processing. Northern type experiments using RNA from wounded and nonwounded leaves demonstrate that RNA homologous to the putative proteinase inhibitor II cDNA's accumulates in leaves as a consequence of wounding, whereas normally the expression of this gene is under strict developmental control, since it is detected only in tubers of potato (Rosahl et al. 1986). In addition the induction of this gene in leaves can also be achieved by the addition of different polysaccharides such as poly galacturonic acid or chitosan. In contrast to the induction of its expression by wounding in leaves, wounding of tubers results in a disappearance of the proteinase II inhibitor m-RNA from these organs.

Notes: Abstract We have studied some energetic and structural ground state properties of a spinless Falicov-Kimball model. Using a method based on “Tchebycheff-Markoff inequalities”, we have calculated sharp upper and lower bounds for the ground state energy. These calculations lead to rigorous results for a special range of parameters, where we are able to give the exactf-level occupation pattern for a square lattice. The results for the “symmetric” case, where a superstructure occurs leading to a metal-insulator transition, have already been published. In this paper we present some additional results also for the “unsymmetric case” and study valence-transitions for fixed particle-number.
