Notes: Observations of thin films of amorphous TbFeCo by electron microscopy with a resolution limit of better than 0.2 nm invariably reveal the presence of very fine microcrystals (sizes ∼2–5 nm). Bright field imaging, in both plan view and in cross section, indicates that these nanocrystals have the crystal structure of α-Fe or Co. In contrast, crystals of Tb metal (or Tb oxides) have not been observed. Similar observations of FeCo thin films, prepared under identical experimental conditions, reveal much larger crystals (typically 10–50 nm). It is concluded that the presence of the rare earth element Tb is crucial to the microstructure displayed by this kind of material.

Notes: Reflectance and transmittance of a light beam strongly focused on multilayer thin films are derived at far field. Using the Fourier transfer technique, the reflectance (transmittance) can be expressed in terms of the reflection (transmission) matrix for plane waves. The readout from magneto-optic multilayer films is optimized for a strongly focused beam. It is found that when the focal spot size w0 is less than three wavelengths, the readout is significantly different from that calculated for plane waves.

Notes: Thermal expansion of the hexagonal (4H) polytype of SiC was measured from 20 to 1000 °C by the x-ray diffraction technique. The principal axial coefficients of thermal expansion are expressed by the second-order polynomials: α11=3.21×10−6+3.56×10−9T−1.62×10−12T2, and α33=3.09×10−6+2.63×10−9T−1.08×10−12T2 (°C−1). The α11 is larger than the α33 over the entire temperature range, yielding a thermal expansion anisotropy "A'' of 0.04 at room temperature which increases to 0.11 at 1000 °C. The thermal expansion of the (4H) structure is compared with previously published results for the cubic (3C) and the hexagonal (6H) SiC polytypes.

Notes: We use the concept of transfer impedances to study a model of Alx Ga1−x As/GaAs heterostructures in which the two-dimensional (2D) gas layer is isolated from the parallel three-dimensional (3D) layer (isolated layer model) but is joined by resistors at the peripheral contacts. We use the conformal mapping method to find the relation between the transfer impedances and the resistivity tensor of the quasi-2D system, and point out differences with the previous literature for a similar model.

Notes: We show how the conformal mapping method can be used to map out the equipotential and current stream lines for an arbitrary Hall plate with van der Pauw geometry by reformulating the Schwarz–Christoffel equation in a form most convenient for computation. Our numerical technique is then used to determine the potential and current distributions in a AlxGa1−x As/GaAs heterostructure with parallel conduction. Our results for a single layer agree with experimental observations at low magnetic field and for regions between the plateaus of the quantum Hall effect. Equipotential and current stream lines are obtained for two previously proposed models for the heterostructures with parallel conduction: the two-band model and the isolated layer model. In the case of a large Hall angle (near the plateau of the quantum Hall effect) singularities of electric fields occur around the source-drain contacts as in a standard Hall bar. For the isolated layer model, additional singularities are formed around the side contacts due to the circulating Hall current through the side contacts which connect the two-dimensional electron gas layer and the supply layer.

Notes: The palaeomagnetism of the latest Devonian-Early Carboniferous Mount Eclipse Sandstone in central Australia reveals samples from 16 out of 31 sites having a consistent hightemperature component of natural remanent magnetization. Site-mean directions from the two limbs of the most detailed studied syncline attain their best grouping after 75 per cent of ‘unfolding’, and further ‘unfolding’ causes a ‘cross-over’ feature. Mineralogical studies using microscope and electron microprobe show that this remanance is most likely to be carried by secondary haematite formed by alteration of Fe-rich minerals during the midCarboniferous deformation. Four different models are examined to reconstruct the palaeohorizontal for the syn-deformational remanence. The best estimate of the palaeomagnetic South Pole position is lat. = 33.8°S, and long. = 121.2°E (dp = 19.2°, dm = 19.7°), close to Australia. This result indicates a rapid polarward movement of eastern Gondwanaland during the first half of the Carboniferous. We also suggest that the widespread Alice Springs Orogeny-related overprints in central Australia were acquired during the beginning of the main phase of deformation in the mid-Carboniferous.

Notes: The effects of acidification, combination of acidification and low temperature and sorbates on the storage of orange juice were investigated. Acidification of orange juice to pH 2.0 and pH 2.5 followed by storage at 5°C resulted in marked reduction in total plate count and yeast and mold population during twelve weeks of storage. Use of 0.03% sorbic acid or potassium sorbate in combination with acidification at pH 2.5 resulted in preservation of orange juice stored at 10°C over 10 wk period; however, vitamin C degradation was enhanced by the presence of the sorbates. The results also indicated that relatively high concentrations of vitamin C were present in orange juice containing high population of microorganisms.

Notes: Abstract The coupling techniques of simplified hybrid plus penalty functions are first presented for matching the Ritz-Galerkin method and thek(k〉-1)-order Lagrange finite element methods to solve complicated problems of elliptic equations, homogeneous or nonhomogeneous, in particular with singularities or unbounded domains. Optimal convergence rates of numerical solutions have been proved in the Sobolev norms. Moreover, the theoretical results obtained in this paper have been verified by numerical experiments for the singular Motz problem.
