    Notes: Excitation of the NH-stretch overtone transitions of HN3 to v1=5 and 6 resulted in predissociation to HN(X) and N2(X) with lifetimes of 80+60−30 and ≤3 ns, respectively. Following excitation of either overtone, the HN fragments were formed predominantly in the symmetric F1, F3 spin–rotation states, with less than 4% population in the antisymmetric F2 levels. Fragment Doppler profiles confirmed that most of the available energy (〉96%) went into translational motion.

    Notes: Vibrational overtone photodissociation is used to examine the spectroscopy and vibrational predissociation lifetimes of HN3 in its ground electronic state. Direct overtone pumping of the N–H stretching levels 5νNH and 6νNH prepares molecules in selected states (v,J,K) near 15 100 and 17 700 cm−1 of vibrational energy; spin-forbidden NH(X 3 Σ−) dissociation fragments are detected by laser-induced fluorescence. Photodissociation spectra of beam-cooled HN3 display mixing of individual rotational levels of the nνNH vibrations with several background states, with derived coupling matrix elements in the range 0.01–0.1 cm−1. Vibrational predissociation lifetimes of mixed components of 5νNH are state specific, with variations of a factor of 2 for only 0.1 cm−1 energy differences. Average lifetimes for low J, K are 210 ns for 5νNH and 0.95 ns for 6νNH. The ratio of decay rates for the two overtone levels, k(6νNH)/k(5νNH)=220, is much greater than predicted by statistical theory, which gives a ratio of 4.

    Notes: State-specific diagnostics are used to characterize the laser-induced desorption of NO from Pt(111). Two desorption channels are observed; one is consistent with thermal activation, while the other is driven by adsorbate interactions with hot carriers. For this latter channel, the observed dependence of the desorption yield on the wavelength of the incident laser pulse (1907, 1064, 532, and 355 nm) and the wavelength dependence of the kinetic energy distributions establish the nonthermal nature of the excitation process. The inverted spin–orbit population, the non-Boltzmann rotational state distributions, and the vibrational state population are interpreted in terms of a desorption mechanism involving a temporary ion resonance.

    Notes: It is proposed that the two Λ-doublet levels of linear molecules with nonzero electronic orbital angular momentum be labeled Λ(A') and Λ(A‘), e.g., Π(A') and Π(A‘) for Π states, etc., according to the following prescription: All series of levels in which the electronic wave function at high J is symmetric with reflection of the spatial coordinates of the electrons in the plane of rotation will be designated Λ(A') for all values of J, and all those for which the electronic wave function is antisymmetric with respect to reflection will be denoted Λ(A‘). It is emphasized that this notation is meant to supplement, and not replace, the accepted spectroscopic e/f labeling and the parity quantum number. The utility of the Λ(A')/Λ(A‘) notation is that it is of most relevance in the mechanistic interpretation of reactive or photodissociative processes involving open-shell molecules.

    Notes: The internal and translational energy distributions of nitric oxide, which was desorbed from a cold polycrystalline platinum foil by laser-induced thermal desorption, were measured using a laser-excited fluorescence, time-of-flight technique. Under irradiation conditions which are estimated to produce a maximum surface temperature of 320 K, desorbed NO in quantum states with 25〈ER〈2162 cm−1 were represented by two distributions of molecules: a translationally energetic component with a mean kinetic energy 〈ET〉/2k which continuously increased from 1400 to 2650 K with increasing ER, a rotational temperature of TR=410 K, and a vibrational temperature of TV(approximate)900 K; and a slower component with 〈ET〉/2k=300 K and TR=170 K.

    Notes: Distributions of internal states and kinetic energies are reported for the laser-induced desorption of NO from a platinum foil. Two desorption channels are observed, one with internal-state populations which are well fit by Boltzmann distribution functions that correspond to the peak surface temperature. The second desorption channel displays population distributions which are non-Boltzmann: kinetic energies exceed the peak surface temperature by a factor of (approximate)5; kinetic energies depend on J; the spin–orbit states are inverted; and the vibrational population exceeds that associated with the maximum surface temperature by a factor of 50. The wavelength dependence of the non-Boltzmann desorption signal suggests that a substrate mediated desorption process is operative.

    Notes: Allozyme variation was examined in 429 Atlantic salmon, from seven sampling sites in England and Wales. Contingency tests for genetic homogeneity using three diagnostic loci revealed no significant differences among populations from the north-east and north-west of the U.K., but detected significant aspartate aminotransferase (AAT) differences between these samples and those from the R. Itchen in Hampshire (southern England). Mitochondrial DNA variation was analysed in 40 salmon from five spawning sites in the R. Itchen. Eight restriction endonucleases were used, of which three (AVAII, HAE III and HINFI) revealed polymorphisms. Six matriarchal lineages were discriminated. Two of the six mtDNA types observed were site-specific. These results suggest a reasonable expectation of discriminating spawning aggregations of Atlantic salmon.

    Notes: Univariate and multivariate analyses were performed on seven anatomical characters of Atlantic herring, Clupea harengus, sampled from seven discrete spawning grounds to the west of the British Isles and from spawning sites in the Baltic and Thames Estuary. Analysis of mean similarities, Mahalanobis D2, percentage overlap and projections from prinicipal co-ordinate analysis demonstrated that a high degree of anatomical similarity exists among the herring spawning communities to the west of the British Isles. Although local aggregations had distinct centres of abundance they appeared to have large overlapping distributions. However, the Celtic Sea sample was found to be distinctly different from adjacent and neighbouring stocks. The samples of coastal herring from the Thames Estuary and the Baltic Sea showed little overlap with other samples.
