    Description: The extraction of particle backscattering from incoherent lidar measurements poses some problems. In the case of measurements of the stratospheric aerosol layer the solution of the lidar equation is based on two assumptions which are necessary to normalize the measured signal and to correct it with the two-way transmission of the laser pulse. Normalization and transmission are tackled by adding the information contained in aerosol particle counter measurements of the University of Wyoming to the ruby lidar measurements at Garmisch-Partenkirchen. Calculated backscattering from height levels above 25 km for the El Chichon period will be compared with lidar measurements and necessary corrections. The calculated backscatter-to-extinction ratios are compared to those, which were derived from a comparison of published extinction values to measured lidar backscattering at Garmisch. These ratios were used to calculate the Garmisch lidar returns. For the period 4 to 12 months after the El Chichon eruption a backscater-to-extinction ratio of 0.026 1/sr was applied with smaller values before and after that time.

    Notes: A four-detector time-differential perturbed angular correlation spectrometer controlled by an inexpensive microcomputer is described. The use of twin-single-channel analyzers permits each detector to identify both gamma rays in the cascade. An improved gating logic system reduces the MCA/computer deadtime and allows larger sample activity and faster data accumulation. The twin-single-channel analyzer and gating circuit additions also permit simultaneous accumulation of two statistically independent sets of four-channel spectra. The spectrometer provides on-line display of raw data and the perturbation function derived from either set of four-channel spectra.

    Notes: Abstract Rats were fed a casein based diet containing Cd biologically bound in ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum L. ssp. italicum) for eight weeks. The grass portion in the diet was 20% (w/w). Cd concentrations of the respective diets were (μg/g diet): 0.24 (control group Cd=0), 0.85 (group Cd=1) and 2.25 (group Cd=2). After six weeks on the diets, food intake and body weight were reduced by the low dietary Cd concentration (Cd=1), while in treatment group Cd=2 this occurred after 2 weeks. After an 8-week feeding period the concentrations of Cd, Cu, Zn, Fe and Ca in selected organs, tissues and in the excreta of rats beside whole body element contents were determined. While no elevated Cd levels due to the Cd intoxication were found in skin, lung, blood, testes, muscle and urine, Cd concentrations in liver, kidney and spleen increased in a dose-dependent manner. This was also true for whole body Cd and Cd in faeces, the latter being 27.6 fold higher in the high Cd load (Cd=2) as compared to the controls (Cd=0). Highest Cd concentrations were recorded in liver and kidney. Calculated as percentage of the whole body metal content liver Cd increased from 1.49% (Cd=0) to 7.41% (Cd=2) and kidney Cd from 0.65% to 4.87%. While no changes of the Ca levels in all organs and tissues investigated were observed, liver Zn increased and blood Cu decreased. Copper and Zn increased in faeces and decreased in urine. With the exception of skin and lung, a significant loss of Fe was observed in all organs and tissues, which was most evident in treatment group Cd=2. Depending on the Cd dose applied, reduced fecal and urinary Fe excretion occurred. Hematological parameters (hemoglobin, hematocrit, blood glucose) and serum enzyme activities (alkaline phosphatase, aspartate aminotransferase, alanine aminotransferase, γ-glutamyl transferase) were not affected by Cd in a biologically bound form. Serum alanine amino transferase showed slightly lower activities in treatment groups Cd=1 and Cd=2. Analysis of the glucose concentration and the activity of alkaline phosphatase in urine did not reveal any changes due to the Cd intoxication. Accumulation and toxicological effects of Cd biologically bound in ryegrass are discussed in relation to inorganic forms of the metal administered to mammals.

    Notes: Summary In 21 patients with ischaemic strokes we have monitored plasma viscosity, total plasma concentration, numeric average molecular weight (Mn), and weight average molecular weight (Mw) of Dextran 40 (dextran) and hydroxyethylstarch 200/0.5 (HES) during 10 days of treatment (days 1–4, 2×500 ml; days 5–10, 1×500 ml). Plasma concentrations of dextran increased during the first 4 days (8.3 mg·ml−1 on the first day to 18.0 mg·ml−1 on the fifth day), reached an apparent steady state of 17.2 mg·ml−1 during the next 6 days, and declined subsequently with a half-time (t1/2) of 4.03 days. After ten days treatment Mn and Mw were shifted towards higher values. Plasma viscosity increased from 1.26 mPas to 1.69 mPas on Day 10 (p〈0.01) and was linearly correlated with the total plasma concentration of dextran (p〈0.001; r=0.88). Total plasma concentrations of HES averaged 11.7 mg·ml−1 on Day 1 and 12.4 mg·ml−1 on Day 5. The molecular weight distribution did not change during the infusions but decreased in comparison with the administered solution. Plasma viscosity fell from 1.40 mPas to 1.30 mPas at Day 10 (p〈0.05) and was not related to the concentration of HES. The haemodiluting effect, as indicated by a decrease of the haematocrit, was 22% and 16.8% for dextran and HES respectively. These data suggest several advantages of HES compared with dextran in haemodilution therapy of ischaemic stroke.

    Notes: Summary Twenty-four healthy volunteers participated in a study on the disposition of ergotamine following oral and rectal administration. Plasma samples were collected surrounding each dose of medication and a new mass spectrometry method was used for quantitation of the samples. A mean peak plasma concentration of 454 pg/ml was measured an average of 50 min following a 2 mg rectal dose. In contrast, the 2 mg oral dose produced a mean peak plasma concentration of 21 pg/ml an average of 69 min following the dose. Area under the concentration time curve indicated a relative bioavailability of 5% for the oral dosage form. Conflicting data on ergotamine disposition highlight the factors which may be responsible for determining bioavailability and pharmacologic activities of the compound.
