    Description: The extraction of particle backscattering from incoherent lidar measurements poses some problems. In the case of measurements of the stratospheric aerosol layer the solution of the lidar equation is based on two assumptions which are necessary to normalize the measured signal and to correct it with the two-way transmission of the laser pulse. Normalization and transmission are tackled by adding the information contained in aerosol particle counter measurements of the University of Wyoming to the ruby lidar measurements at Garmisch-Partenkirchen. Calculated backscattering from height levels above 25 km for the El Chichon period will be compared with lidar measurements and necessary corrections. The calculated backscatter-to-extinction ratios are compared to those, which were derived from a comparison of published extinction values to measured lidar backscattering at Garmisch. These ratios were used to calculate the Garmisch lidar returns. For the period 4 to 12 months after the El Chichon eruption a backscater-to-extinction ratio of 0.026 1/sr was applied with smaller values before and after that time.

    Notes: Abstract Profiles of electrical conductivity in the troposphere and stratosphere were measured by balloon-borne conductivity sondes at Garmisch-Partenkirchen, West Germany, from January to May, 1980, when volcanic activity was low. The aerosol concentration has been deduced from the relative decrease of conductivity from surrounding values by assuming the effective attachment coefficient of ions to aerosols. A prominent decrease of the conductivity near the tropopause is usually observed indicating high concentrations of Aitken particles (500–1000 cm−3). A decrease of conductivity, well above the tropopause, is sometimes observed, probably due to the transport of tropospheric Aitken particles with high concentration (200–400 cm−3) into the stratosphere.

    Notes: Abstract Balloon-borne observations of electrical conductivity in the troposphere and stratosphere were performed using conductivity sondes at Garmisch-Partenkirchen, West Germany, from June to November, 1980, after the Mt St Helens eruption. A significant decrease of atmospheric ions in the altitudes from the troposphere to lower stratosphere has been detected until several months after the eruption in comparison with the observational results obtained before the eruption. Simulteneous ruby lidar observation a month after the eruption indicates an increased amount of aerosol at nearly the same altitude as that of conductivity decrease. Several months after the eruption it appears that aerosols detected by lidar and those effective in reducing ion concentration have different profiles.

    Notes: Summary Guidelines for the performance and analysis of bioequivalence studies are not very specific. The advantages and disadvantages of the following methods and tests are discussed: analysis of variance by summation or by use of general linear models, nonparametric procedures, aposteriori probabilities and tests on the normality of residuals and on the variability of the results. Arguments for or against an analysis of data after logarithmic transformation versus analysis of untransformed data are presented. If the confidence intervals lie within certain limits, preparations may be considered equivalent. The criteria leading to those limits are discussed. It is recommended that concentration-dependent data of bioequivalence studies be evaluated by analysis of variance after logarithmic transformation, applying general linear models. Data that by theoretical reasons cannot be normally or log-normally distributed should be analysed by nonparametric methods. Otherwise these methods can only be recommended if a significant deviation from normality has been noted and only for two-way cross-over designs. For a geometric evaluation (after logarithmic transformation) the regions of acceptance should be symmetrical in the logarithm, e.g. (80%, 125%).

    Notes: Summary In 21 patients with ischaemic strokes we have monitored plasma viscosity, total plasma concentration, numeric average molecular weight (Mn), and weight average molecular weight (Mw) of Dextran 40 (dextran) and hydroxyethylstarch 200/0.5 (HES) during 10 days of treatment (days 1–4, 2×500 ml; days 5–10, 1×500 ml). Plasma concentrations of dextran increased during the first 4 days (8.3 mg·ml−1 on the first day to 18.0 mg·ml−1 on the fifth day), reached an apparent steady state of 17.2 mg·ml−1 during the next 6 days, and declined subsequently with a half-time (t1/2) of 4.03 days. After ten days treatment Mn and Mw were shifted towards higher values. Plasma viscosity increased from 1.26 mPas to 1.69 mPas on Day 10 (p〈0.01) and was linearly correlated with the total plasma concentration of dextran (p〈0.001; r=0.88). Total plasma concentrations of HES averaged 11.7 mg·ml−1 on Day 1 and 12.4 mg·ml−1 on Day 5. The molecular weight distribution did not change during the infusions but decreased in comparison with the administered solution. Plasma viscosity fell from 1.40 mPas to 1.30 mPas at Day 10 (p〈0.05) and was not related to the concentration of HES. The haemodiluting effect, as indicated by a decrease of the haematocrit, was 22% and 16.8% for dextran and HES respectively. These data suggest several advantages of HES compared with dextran in haemodilution therapy of ischaemic stroke.

    Notes: Summary Twenty-four healthy volunteers participated in a study on the disposition of ergotamine following oral and rectal administration. Plasma samples were collected surrounding each dose of medication and a new mass spectrometry method was used for quantitation of the samples. A mean peak plasma concentration of 454 pg/ml was measured an average of 50 min following a 2 mg rectal dose. In contrast, the 2 mg oral dose produced a mean peak plasma concentration of 21 pg/ml an average of 69 min following the dose. Area under the concentration time curve indicated a relative bioavailability of 5% for the oral dosage form. Conflicting data on ergotamine disposition highlight the factors which may be responsible for determining bioavailability and pharmacologic activities of the compound.

    Notes: Abstract Air traffic is a source of trace gases in the upper troposphere and lower stratosphere. Contrails readily form from water vapor exhausts under favorable meteorological conditions. Since contrails are ice crystal clouds like natural cirrus clouds, they bear a greenhouse potential which has to be investigated. The IFU has built a scanning lidar system employing a pulsed Nd:YAG laser as the emitter and a 52-cm diameter telescope as the receiver. Signals are processed in several channels to investigate depolarization and wavelength dependencies of the light backscattered from ice crystals. These investigations are aimed at the formation and life cycles of contrails, their optical properties, and their climatological consequences in areas of dense air traffic. The experimental lidar setup is described and a sample measurement is shown.
