Description: An analytical method of obtaining the natural frequencies and mode shapes of clamped, rectangular plates having a small initial curvature is presented. Specifically, the singular perturbation technique is used to reduce the fourth-order plate vibration problem to the simpler membrane problem with modified boundary conditions that account for the bending effects. The eigenfrequencies for plates with inverse aspect ratios varying between 0.1 and 1.0 and for the dimensionless normal prestress between 0.1 and 1.0 have been presented for values of epsilon, the normalized bending rigidity, ranging between 0.0010 and 0.2500. It is established that a small initial curvature has no effect on the frequency of vibration of the plate. However, its effect is manifested in the eigenmodes.

Description: The method of matched asymptotic expansions is used to solve the transverse free vibration of a slightly curved, thin rectangular plate. Analytical results for natural frequencies and mode shapes are presented in the limit when the dimensionless bending rigidity, epsilon, is small compared with in-plane forces. Results for different boundary conditions are obtained when the initial deflection is: (1) a polynomial in both directions, and (2) the product of a polynomial and a trigonometric function, and arbitrary. For the arbitrary initial deflection case, the Fourier series technique is used to define the initial deflection. The results obtained show that the natural frequencies of vibration of slightly curved plates are coincident with those of perfectly flat, prestressed rectangular plates. However, the eigenmodes are very different from those of initially flat prestressed rectangular plates. The total deflection is found to be the sum of the initial deflection, the deflection resulting from the solution of the flat plate problem, and the deflection resulting from the static problem.

Description: Described is a program for development of coolant passage geometries, material systems, and joining processes that will produce long-life hydrogen-cooled structures for scramjet applications. Tests were performed to establish basic material properties, and samples constructed and evaluated to substantiate fabrication processes and inspection techniques. Results of the study show that the basic goal of increasing the life of hydrogen-cooled structures two orders of magnitude relative to that of the Hypersonic Research Engine can be reached with available means. Estimated life is 19000 cycles for the channels and 16000 cycles for pin-fin coolant passage configurations using Nickel 201. Additional research is required to establish the fatigue characteristics of dissimilar-metal coolant passages (Nickel 201/Inconel 718) and to investigate the embrittling effects of the hydrogen coolant.

Description: A lightweight Filament Wound Case (FWC) Solid Rocket Booster (SRB) is being developed by NASA to increase the payload capability of the space shuttle. As with the steel boosters, the current plan is to recover the FWC SRB's after they impact the ocean at 65 to 85 ft/sec. As the boosters enter the ocean (nozzle first) the water moves away from the vehicle creating a cavity, which then collapses on the vehicle, and results in a significant loading event. To understand this loading event, tests were conducted on a quarter scale FWC model to measure cavity collapse pressure distributions, deflected shape and the effects of end conditions and pressure scaling.

Description: A dynamic analysis technique is presented that can be used to determine the response of a discrete model of a large linear structural system composed of multiple substructures. The technique circumvents the costly computation of the modal characteristics of the combined system. This is accomplished by relying on a predictor-corrector scheme to converge iteratively to the interface accelerations of the combined system, while the equations of motions of the individual structures are integrated separately. In this regard, the temporal slopes of the interface accelerations (jerks) are computed at each time point of integration to predict the interface accelerations at the next time point. The proposed technique is exemplified by conducting a Space Shuttle landing loads analysis; the obtained numerical data demonstrate its reliability and efficiency.

Description: In the dynamic formulation of holonomic and nonholonomic systems based on D'Alembert-Lagrange equation, the forces of constraints are maintained in the dynamic equations by introducing auxiliary variables, called Lagrange multipliers. This approach introduces a set of generalized reaction forces associated with the system generalized coordinates. Different sets of variables can be used as generalized coordinates and accordingly, the generalized reactions associated with these generalized coordinates may not be the actual reaction forces at the joints. In rigid body dynamics, the generalized reaction forces and the actual reaction forces at the joints represent equipollent systems of forces since they produce the same total forces and moments at and about any point on the rigid body. This is not, however, the case in deformable body analyses wherein the generalized reaction forces depend on the system generalized reference and elastic coordinates. In this paper, a method for determining the actual reaction forces at the joints from the generalized reaction forces in deformable multibody systems is presented.

Description: The feasibility of testing large space structures in 1-g environment for the purpose of verifying its performance requirement is considered. Because of the difference in test objectives as compared to the conventional structural systems, the scale modelling laws are examined. The investigation is performed on a generic structural element, a space beam. A preliminary conclusion is obtained based on the results.

Description: The application of a generalized optimality criteria to framed structures is presented. The optimality conditions, Lagrangian multipliers, resizing algorithm, and scaling procedures are all represented as a function of the objective and constraint functions along with their respective gradients. The optimization of two plane frames under multiple loading conditions subject to stress, displacement, generalized stiffness, and side constraints is presented. These results are compared to those found by optimizing the frames using a nonlinear mathematical programming technique.
