Notes: The Japanese VAMAS-SCA working group is composed of 19 institutes. Three kinds of Au-Cu alloys (Au25 at%-Cu75 at%, Au50 at%-Cu50 at%, Au75 at%-Cu25 at%) were prepared, and these specimens were distributed to the members of Japanese VAMAS-SCA working group and Auger peak amplitude ratios were measured to clarify the correlation factor of different types of spectrometers. The comparison was carried out by using the relative sensitivity factor for Au and Cu. The relative sensitivity factor for lower energy varied from spectrometer to spectrometer, but that for higher energy did not vary so much. Therefore, to carry out the inter-laboratory comparison of the data, the transfer of the data of peak amplitude at higher energy should be recommended.

Notes: Semicrystalline LaRC-TPI is known to be capable of recrystallizing to higher melting crystalline forms upon initial melting. The behavior of these different crystalline forms has not been studied before. The present study uses techniques of differential scanning calorimetry and X-ray diffractometry to investigate thes crystalline structural changes during recrystallization of this material. Semicrystalline LaRC-TPIs synthesized from three different laboratories are included in this work.

Notes: The precise pressure dependence of apparent diffusion and permeation coefficients was measured by using a microcomputer system for collecting and treating permeation data for CO2 in glassy poly(ethylene terephthalate) below 1 atm between 15 and 40°C. The partial immobilization model was used to determine the dual-mode sorption and mobility parameters. The curves calculated with these parameters were in excellent agreement with experimental data. These parameters were also compared with sorption parameters obtained from measurements at 30°C. There was a small difference between the values of the parameters obtained from these permeation data and those from sorption data which we had previously obtained. Relations between this difference and the method of determination of the parameters are discussed.

Notes: Sorption kinetics and equilibria as well as permeabilities and diffusion time lags for CO2 in Kapton polyimide film have been studied at temperatures from 35 to 55°C and pressures up to 0.78 atm. The sorption/desorption cycles indicate that the diffusivity of CO2 increases with increasing local penetrant concentration in the polymer. Both the permeability and time lag decrease with increasing upstream CO2 pressure. All of these results are described well by theoretical expression based on the dual-mode theory of sorption and transport in glassy polymers.

Notes: A simple technique is described for in vivo assessing the interfacial rigidity between a dental root implant and the bone surrounding it. The method is based on estimating the frequency (10 to 150 KHz) and amplitude of the vibration of the implant induced by a small pulsed force. Application of the force to the implant and detection of the vibrational signal from the implant are performed by lightly touching it with two fine needles connected with piezoelectric elements. A distinct signal difference observed in animal tests of bioactive implant and nonbioactive one is shown to well agree with that obtained from corresponding ex vivo models.

Notes: The ammonium perchlorate (AP)-oxidized composite propellants, each of which contains separately copper chromite (CC) as a burning rate adjuster and carbon black (CB) as an opacifier, have been ignited at subatmospheric pressures of argon gas by means of a carbon dioxide laser, and the effects of the additives on the ignition behavior have been studied. It has been found that copper chromite shortens the ignition time especially below 100 torr and that at the same time it enhances the ignitability, i.e., self-sustaining ignition.Carbon black, being an opacifier decreasing reflectivity and increasing radiative absorption at propellant surface, can not be recognized to be an active catalyst in ignition at subatmospheric pressures. The data of differential thermal analysis (DTA) for above specimens have indicated that the maximum exothermic peak temperature is shifted toward a lower one with the increase in CC concentration, the exothermic peak structure becoming sharper. However, CB addition to the basic propellant makes exothermic peaks less distinct. The results of DTA support those obtained from the ignition experiments above.

Notes: Dialkyl fumarates with bulky ester substituents were found to homopolymerize easily in the presence of 2,2′-azobisisobutyronitrile. Among these fumarates, diisopropyl fumarate (DiPF) homopolymerized with the above initiator (20mmol/1) in bulk at 40∼60°C to give homopolymers with number-average molecular weight of 70 000∼221 000. Similar results were also observed for di-t-butyl fumarate (DtBF) and Methyl-t-butyl fumarate (MtBF). These polymers were found to consist of a lessflexible rod-like (polyalkoxycarbonylmethylene) from the molecular model and the solution property measurements. These polymers which were colorless powders did not melt before thermal degradation, but they were soluble in most organic solvents. From TG thermogram observed in a nitrogen atmosphere, the DiPF polymer showed T(init.)=257°C and T(max.)=316°C, and the main degradation products at 400°C, except gaseous materials, were isopropanol and DiPF monomer (32:1 in mole ratio). These thermal degradation behavior was different from that for the polymers of DtBF and MtBF which underwent degradation from lower temperatures like 190°C. Acid and alkaline hydrolyses of the DiPF polymer were observed to occur very hardly.

Notes: The molecular and crystal structure of 2,6-bis[2-(heptamethylcyclotetrasiloxan-2-yl)ethyl]hexamethylcyclotetrasiloxane (1) representing a three-unit oligomer (“trimer”) of the corresponding poly(hexamethylcyclotetrasiloxane-2,6-diylethylene) (3) was determined. A similarity of the crystal packings of 1 and the earlier studied “dimer” 2 allows to establish the parameters of the “subcell” of polymer 3, which are in a good agreement with the data of its wide-angle X-ray study.

Notes: Amorphous poly(ethylene terephthalate) has been solid state coextruded to a series of draw ratios up to 4.4 at 50, 60, 70 and 90°C. These uniaxially drawn samples have been examined by optical microscopy and light scattering and for increases in crystallinity and birefringence as a function of draw ratio and draw temperature. The birefringence for PET may be among the highest yet reported - 0.21.
