    Notes: The nephron of adult bowfin, Amia calva, was described using light and electron microscopic techniques. The kidney of the bowfin possesses an abundant supply of renal corpuscles with each consisting of a glomerulus and a Bowman's capsule of visceral (podocyte) and parietal layers. No juxtaglomerular apparatus is present. The epithelium of the tubule is continuous with the parietal epithelium and is divisible in descending order into neck, first proximal, second proximal, first distal, second distal, and collecting segments. The tubules drain into a complex system of collecting ducts that ultimately unite with the main excretory duct, the archinephric duct. Mucous cells are the dominant cell throughout the entire ductular system. Nephrostomes are dispersed along the kidney capsule.The neck segment has a ciliated epithelium, and while both proximal segments possess a prominent brush border, the fine structure of the first implies involvement in protein absorption and the second in the transport and reabsorption of solutes. The cells of the first distal segment are characterized by deep infolding of the plasma membrane and a rich supply of mitochrondria suggesting the presence of a mechanism for ion transport. The second distal segment is composed of cells resembling the chloride cells of fishes and these cells are present in progressively decreasing numbers in the collecting segment and duct system so that only a few are present in the epithelium of the archinephric duct. The “renal chloride cells” possess an abundant network of smooth tubules and numerous mitochondria with a rich supply of cristae. Glycogen is also a conspicuous component of these cells. The presence of “renal chloride cells” in this freshwater holostean, in other relatively primitive freshwater teleosts, and in larval and adult lampreys is discussed with reference to both phylogeny and the need for a special mechanism for renal ion conservation through absorption.

    Notes: The effect of age on the synthesis of specific proteins by hepatocytes was studied in Fischer F344 rats using two-dimensional polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis. Almost all proteins synthesized by hepatocytes from young rats were synthesized by hepatocytes isolated from old rats. Of over 500 proteins visually compared by two-dimensional polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis, only 11 proteins were observed to disappear and/or appear consistently with increasing age. The rates of synthesis of 36 randomly chosen proteins were quantified. Interestingly, the synthesis of 35 of the 36 proteins decreased between 5 and 30 months of age. The decrease in protein synthesis varied (15% to 70%) from one protein to another; i.e., a heterogeneity was observed in the age-related decrease in the synthesis of proteins. The age-related decrease in protein synthesis was statistically significant for 53% of the proteins studied. The total decrease in the rate of synthesis of all 36 proteins studied was 40% between 5 and 30 months of age, which is essentially the same as the decrease in total protein synthesis by suspension of hepatocytes isolated from 5- and 30-month-old rats. The results of this study demonstrate that the mechanism underlaying aging is different from development, which is characterized by a major change in the species of proteins synthesized by a cell.

    Notes: In previous experiments, two collagenous fragments were isolated from pepsin digests of chicken hyaline cartilage and called the high molecular weight. (HMW) and low molecular weight (LMW) fractions [3]. In the present experiments, the chains of LMW were isolated after denaturation and subsequent reduction and alkylation of interchain disulfide bridges and were further fractionated by carboxymethyl-cellulose chromatography. Four peaks were resolved during chromatography and were designated LMW 1, 2A, 2B, and 3. Amino acid analyses and peptide mapping after cleavage with trypsin, V8 protease, and cyanogen bromide showed that three genetically distinct chains must be present in LMW. Fractions 2A and 2B were very similar, but not identical, in structure. LMW 1, 2A plus 2B, and 3 were consistently isolated in approximately equal proportions, suggesting that the probable chain organization of LMW is [1][2A + 2B][3]. This suggestion was supported further by experiments that attempted to fractionate LMW by carboxymethyl-cellulose chromatography after denaturation but without reduction and alkylation of interchain disulfide bridges. No fractionation of LMW was achieved, the single peak subsequently being shown to contain LMW 1, 2A plus 2B, and 3.

    Description: During the past two decades many words have been written both for and against the hypothesis that the tectonic setting of a suite of igneous rocks is retained by the chemical variability within the suite. For example, it is argued that diagrams can be constructed from modern/recent basalt subcompositions within the system Ti-Zr-Y-Nb-Sr such that tectonomagmatic settings can be reclaimed. If one accepts this conclusion, it is tempting to inquire as to how far this hypothesis can be extended into other petrological realms. If chemical variations of metabasalts retain information relating to their genesis (tectonic setting), for example, this would be most helpful in reconstructing the history of basalts from greenstone belts. A discussion follows.

    Description: Software development for the Trospheric Air Motion Measurement Systems (TAMMS) is documented. In July/August the TAMMS was flown on the NASA/Goddard Flight Center Electra aircraft for 19 mission for the ABLE-2A (Amazon Boundary Layer Experiment) in Brazil. In December 1985, several flights were performed to assess the contamination and boundary layer of the Electra. Position data, flow angles, pressure transducer measurements were recorded. The programs written for the ABLE-2A were modified due to timing considerations for this particular program. The 3-step programs written for EBLE (Electra Boundary Layer Experiment) are described. Power up and log-on procedures are discussed. A few editing techniques are described for modification of the programs.

    Description: Examples of the onset of a resonant ion beam instability are illustrated on the basis of ISEE 3 observations of 66 large amplitude wave events at the plasma sheet boundary layer. Analysis of the observational data showed that the observed wave and ion beam parameters were, in general, in agreement with linear theoretical predictions of resonant ion beam instability. The distribution of ion energies at the onset of the instability is given in a table.
