    Description: Airborne measurements of OH were made near the Intertropical Convergence Zone in the Pacific, and the averaged results for each data run were compared with those calculated from a photochemical model. The measured OH concentrations were found to vary along the flight path. Possible causes for the observed variations are discussed.

    Description: Results from an airborne intercomparison of techniques to measure tropospheric levels of nitric oxide (NO) are discussed. The intercomparison was part of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration's Global Tropospheric Experiment and was conducted during missions flown in the fall of 1983 and spring of 1984. Instruments intercompared included a laser-induced fluorescence (LIF) system and two chemiluminescence instruments (CL). NO mixing ratios from below 5 pptv (parts per trillion by volume) to greater than 100 pptv were reported, with the majority less than 20 pptv. Good correlation was observed between the measurements reported by the CL and LIF techniques. The general level of agreement observed for the ensemble of measurements obtained during the two missions provides the basis from which one can conclude that equally 'valid' measurements of background levels of NO can be expected from either CL or LIF instruments. At the same time the periods of disagreement that were observed between the CL and LIF instruments as well as between the two CL instruments highlight the difficulty of obtaining reliable measurements with NO mixing ratios in the 5-20 pptv range and emphasize the vigilance that should be maintained in future NO measurements.

    Description: Glacier like landforms are observed in the fretted terrain of Mars in the latitude belts near + or - 42 deg. It was suggested that sublimation or accumulation-ablation rates could be estimated for these glaciers if their shapes were known. To this end, photoclinometric profiles were obtained of a number of these landforms. On the basis of analyses of these profiles, it was concluded that ice is chiefly ablating from these landforms that either are inactive rock-glaciers or have materials within them that are moving exceedingly slowly at this time. These conclusions are consistent with other geologic information. The analyses were performed using a two-dimensional model of an isothermal glacier.

    Description: Metamorphic core complexes and detachment fault terranes in the American Southwest are products of stretching of continental crust in the Tertiary. The physical and geometric properties of the structures, fault rocks, and contact relationships that developed as a consequence of the extension are especially well displayed in southeastern Arizona. The structures and fault rocks, as a system, reflect a ductile-through-brittle continuum of deformation, with individual structures and faults rocks showing remarkably coordinated strain and displacement patterns. Careful mapping and analysis of the structural system has led to the realization that strain and displacement were partitioned across a host of structures, through a spectrum of scales, in rocks of progressively changing rheology. By integrating observations made in different parts of the extensional system, especially at different inferred depth levels, it has been possible to construct a descriptive/kinematic model of the progressive deformation that achieved continental crustal extension in general, and the development of metamorphic core complexes in particular.

    Description: In an effort to isolate the essential physics of the mesosphere and the thermosphere, a steady one-dimensional density and pressure model has been developed in support of related NASA activities, i.e., projects such as the AOTV and the Space Station. The model incorporates a zeroth order basic state including both the three-dimensional wind field and its associated shear structure, etc. A first order wave field is also incorporated in period bands ranging from about one second to one day. Both basic state and perturbation quantities satsify the combined constraints of mass, linear momentum and energy conservation on the midlatitude beta plane. A numerical (iterative) technique is used to solve for the vertical wind which is coupled to the density and pressure fields. The temperature structure from 1 to 1000 km and the lower boundary conditions are specified using the U.S. Standard Atmosphere 1976. Vertical winds are initialized at the top of the Planetary Boundary Layer using Ekman pumping values over flat terrain. The model also allows for the generation of waves during the geostrophic adjustment process and incorporates wave nonlinearity effects.

    Description: Several computer models of the thermosphere are discussed. J70MM, the Jacchia 1970 model with matrix and matrix mean output, and J703X, the Jacchia 1970, 1971, and 1977 models, are of primary interest. The subroutines in these programs were studied in detail, and several mistakes were found and corrected. It is proposed that a weighted average of the three-hour geomagnetic index be used in the models rather than a single index value. The densities (for a given date and time) generated by the J703X program (all three models), using both a single value of the index and weighted averages for three different lag times, are tabulated and discussed. Most of the equations used in the models are the results of empirical curve fits. An attempt was made to generate a theoretical prediction of the thermospheric temperature profile based on a simple physical model of atmospheric heat conduction in a spherically-symmetric shell. The exponential heating theory and the temperature dependence of k are discussed.

    Description: Planetesimal orbital evolution in a resisting medium near an accreting protoplanet was studied to explore mechanisms for capture into Trojan and satellite orbits. Various mechanisms for capture into libration were proposed, e.g., increase in Jupiter/Sun mass ratio, change in Jovian orbital radius, and collisions of asteroids with interplanetary dust. Studies include effects of solar nebula gas drag on orbital evolution. In general, the gas deviates from Keplerian motion, causing secular decay of planetesimal orbits, as well as damping eccentricity. The motion of bodies near Jupiter under the effect of a resisting medium was numerically explored. The equations of motion were integrated using the formalism of the planar restricted three body problem, modified to include effects by gas drag and a growing Jupiter.

    Description: Models of lunar origin in which the Moon accretes in orbit about the Earth from material approaching the Earth from heliocentric orbits must overcome a fundamental problem: the approach orbits of such material would be, in the simplest approximation, equally likely to be prograde or retrograde about the Earth, with the result that accretion of such material adds mass but not angular momentum to circumterrestrial satellites. Satellite orbits would then decay due to the resulting drag, ultimately impacting onto the Earth. One possibility for adding both material and angular momentum to Earth orbit is investigated: imbalance in the delivered angular momentum between pro and retrograde Earth passing orbits which arises from the three body dynamics of planetesimals approaching the Earth from heliocentric space. In order to study angular momentum delivery to circumterrestrial satellites, the near Earth velocities were numerically computed as a function of distance from the Earth for a large array of orbits systematically spanning heliocentric phase space.

    Description: Characterization of the Venusian surface in terms of its radar properties was accomplished by application of an unsupervised, linear discriminant algorithm to two Pioneer-Venus (PV) Orbiter radar data sets: the RMS-slope (surface roughness) and reflectivity. Both databases were spatially filtered to the same effective resolution of 100 km prior to classification. A recent supervised classification study using these data was based on presupposed morphologic significance of selected data ranges. The knowledge of both Venusian geology and the geologic significance of the radar data is so limited that the data warrant a more unsupervised approach; for this study a linear discriminant classifier was chosen. This approach is purely statistical, thereby removing any observer bias. Statistical significance of the resulting clusters was evaluated by an ancillary program in which an F test utilizing the Mahalanobis' distance.

    Description: Understanding asteroid collisional evolution is important for characterizing the physical state of asteroids today and for learning about the processes that acted in this region of the solar system early in its history. The collisional outcome algorithm in the numerical simulation of asteroid evolution was revised to reflect pressure-strengthening. Asteroid collisions are now treated as a distribution of oblique impacts rather than as only head-on collisions. The initial and evolved size distribution of a plausible asteroid population is compared with the observed size distribution. Asteroid accretion times and reconstruction of the primordial solar nebula suggest that there was significantly more mass in this part of the solar system when the asteroids were accreting.
