Notes: Polyetheretherketone (PEEK) is a relatively new high temperature engineering thermoplastic. The stability of neat and fiberglass reinforced PEEK towards air, KClO4, and TiH1.65/KClO4 blend was studied by the surface sensitive technique of X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and bulk technique of thermogravimetric (TG) analysis. Both of these examinations revealed no oxidation in the presence of air or KClO4 at temperatures of 60 or 120°C. In addition, no reduction of PEEK was observed in the presence of a reducing agent such as TiH1.65. The TG results also showed no air oxidation between 120 and 500°C.

Notes: A finite-element method is given for efficient simulation of multiphase distillation systems. Breakpoints are adaptively located to coincide with phase discontinuities. Thermodynamic criteria for the states at these discontinuities are included in the equation system. The adjustable breakpoint locations are calculated simultaneously with the other system variables by global Newton iteration. Worked examples demonstrate the accuracy and efficiency of the method.

Notes: Diffusion and chemical reaction in a catalyst pore is simulated as a Monte Carlo process. In this analysis the average diffusion distance, calculated for a large number of wall collisions, and the reaction probability are computed as two independent statistical events. This formulation yields results that compare very well with the theoretical values, yet uses minimal computer time. Results reported include typical concentration profiles and effectiveness factors for first- and second-order isothermal reactions using the method described. These results show promise of extension to more complex systems where analytical solutions are not available.

Notes: An experimental study was made of tracer dispersion in bidisperse sintered glass materials prepared from mixtures of two sizes of beads with mean diameters of 325 and 95 μm. The equivalent dispersion coefficient increases by a factor of 30 when the porosity decreases from 30 to 12%; this variation is similar to that measured in monodisperse samples. The variation of dispersion can be characterized by the ratio R = ℓd/L1 where ℓd is a length scale deduced from the equivalent dispersion coefficient and L1 is obtained from conductivity and permeability measurements. It is shown that the increase of ℓd/L1 correlates with the loss of porosity during the sintering process. Lightly sintered samples with a percentage of small beads around the minimum of porosity display a nearly Gaussian behavior, with a dispersion coefficient close to that obtained in homogeneous equivalent mixtures. This result is in contrast with very large anomalies observed by other authors. These results imply that dispersion in consolidated samples is sensitive to large-scale inhomogeneities of the materials rather than to their detailed structure.

Notes: Micellar-enhanced ultrafiltration can be used to remove multivalent anions or cations from aqueous streams. In the removal of chromate ions (CrO42-), the cationic surfactant hexadecylpyridinium chloride is added to the solution, and the chromate ions preferentially adsorb at the surface of the highly charged surfactant micelles. The solution is processed by ultrafiltration, using a membrane with pore sizes small enough to block the passage of the micelles and adsorbed ions. The permeate solution has a chromate concentration less than 0.1% that in the original stream. A new equilibrium model, combining the simple two-phase polyelectrolyte theory of Oosawa with thermodynamic activity, material-balance, and charge-balance equations, successfully correlates ultrafiltration and equilibrium dialysis results for chromate solutions.

Notes: A method is presented to estimate the diffusivities of electrolytes in concentrated multicomponent systems. The method is based on the Stefan-Maxwell flux equations. Explicit expressions have been developed for the phenomenological transport coefficients. These expressions incorporate the effects of solvation, viscosity, and ionic interactions. It has been shown that multicomponent diffusion behavior can be related to corresponding single-electrolyte and tracer diffusion cases. Thus, solvation effects are estimated from single-electrolyte data, and ion-ion interaction effects are obtained from tracer diffusion studies. The method has been tested for the ternary system NaCl-KCl, at concentrations of up to 3.0 M, and for corresponding single-electrolyte and tracer diffusion cases at concentrations of up to 4.0 M. In general, the method predicts phenomenological coefficient values within 1.5% of the experimental values for univalent systems.

Notes: A reduced-order collocation method is applied to the optimal design of distillation columns. The resulting number of equations is determined by the user and is independent of the numbers of stages in the column sections. The collocation method furthermore permits these stage numbers to be treated as continuous variables, thus extending the discrete solution set. This greatly facilitates the optimization. Several demonstration problems are worked out.
